Only 20 minutes away from Naguabo is Ceiba. Another fascinating visit. This time to The Center for Research and Restoration of Marine Organisms - CIROM in Spanish. Alejandra Garcia @amarys101 , Aquaculture technician was gracious to show us around and answer our questions. The facilities are the first land-based nurseries for marine organisms in Puerto Rico. The recovery of coral reef ecosystems are aided through producing ecologically-important marine organisms such as herbivores and corals. These animals reared are used for ecosystem- based coral reef restoration efforts in Puerto Rico. The CIROM facilities are currently rearing three types of sea urchins (Diadema antillarum, Echinometra viridis and Tripneustes ventricosus), multiple species of corals, and herbivorous crabs (Maguimithrax spinosissimus) @cirom_pr @isercaribe @stcmwilliams #puertorico🇵🇷 #ceiba #aquaculturesciences #mariculture #coralaquaculture #Aquaculture #stem #coralscience #seaurchin #caribbean #crabs #marineconservation #Womeninscience #caribbeanwomenforcaribbeanwomen

This time in “ El Niño explained…”, what does REEFolution do to minimize the negative effects of El Niño? How do we prepare? Dr. Ewout: “ Short term solutions to marine heatwaves could be to move coral nurseries to deeper water, which is often cooler and shaded, thereby reducing the heat stress. We are currently measuring which depth would be most optimal, as placing the nurseries too deep would deprive the corals from enough sunlight to get enough food in the first place. A similar solution would be to shade the corals, for example by placing floating cloths on the sea surface. Here at REEFolution that is unlikely to work though, given the frequent boat traffic in the area. A more high-tech and controversial option that is being explored in Australia is to create shade by manipulating clouds and fog. Other, still largely hypothetical, short-term solutions could be to pump up cold water from deeper or use probiotics to make corals more heat resilient. These more intrusive interventions are not without risks, but the danger to coral reefs and coastal communities of no action are now so severe that these options are being explored, though only on small scales for now. More long-term solutions that REEFolution pursues are to identify, breed and restore reefs with more heat resilient coral species and genotypes. We are specifically focusing on corals growing in the intertidal zones, as these corals are already able to withstand high variations in temperature due to their exposure during low tide. Ultimately, the only long-term solution would be to pursue global climate action, as without the effect of global climate change there would not have been mass coral bleaching in the first place.” #ElNiñoExplained #CoralScience #REEFolution #CoralBleaching #ElNiño #Kenya

This time in “ El Niño explained…”, we asked Dr. Ewout about his experience with previous El Niño phenomena in Kenya. When did you experience El Niño during your time in Kenya? “ In the seven years that I have been working with corals in Kenya, there has been an El Niño twice: in 2015-2016 and 2019-2020. In both years, the seawater temperatures crossed the bleaching threshold of 30 degrees Celsius.” What happened to the corals in those years? “ In 2016, whole parts of the reefs turned completely white. Not just the corals, but also the sea anemones for example. It was scary, because if everything that was white would die, there would be very little left of the coral reefs. In the end most corals recovered, but some vulnerable species did not and almost completely disappeared from the reefs. Over the years, those corals have come slowly back, but not as abundant as they used to be. In 2020, those same vulnerable corals that were still recovering started to bleach again. This time, the water temperatures cooled quite quickly again and there was fortunately not much mortality.” What have you learned for the future? “ It is very clear that some species can withstand higher water temperatures better than others. However, that poses a dilemma for reef conservationists: should we only put effort to conserve the species that are expected to do well in an increasingly hot world, or should our efforts be directed to save the most vulnerable species that otherwise could go extinct and thus disappear forever? This is a heated debate, but I’m personally inclined towards the former: I think the best we can do now is to conserve and restore reefs with the most promising species, even if that means the reefs will become less diverse. Of course, other groups can focus on the latter, for example by freezing genetic material as a way to conserve biodiversity for eventual reintroduction.” #ElNiñoExplained #CoralScience #REEFolution #CoralBleaching #ElNiño #Kenya

Did you know, our wonderful team of interns and staff help care for our corals before they go out on the reef? I.CARE receives multiple different coral species from so many of our amazing partners across the state of Florida. These corals then stay at a holding facility, our partners at Keys Marine Lab, where they are taken care of by our amazing staff and interns. 👐 It's important to remember that just like us, corals are living organisms and require certain conditions to thrive! 🌞 Appropriate sunlight, adequate water temperature, water pH levels, and food intake are among some of the many factors our interns and staff take into account to help these baby corals thrive! 🌊

Did you know that coral reefs can extend to great depths, far beyond what we see during recreational dives? In some places, they reach depths of over 100 meters. The environmental conditions at these depths differ significantly from those in shallow waters, giving rise to unique species assemblages, adaptations, and phenomena. Our CORALab member, @itai_underwater_photography, is currently focusing on the coral Leptoseris, studying how it thrives in the deep reefs of the Gulf of Aqaba and Eilat—investigating its reproduction, feeding habits, and growth. I often buy browned out corals as they are cheap and I like the challenge of returning them to their original colour. Corals go brown when an over production of zooxanthellae happens in the coral tissue. This can be from a number of reasons being low light, high nutrients in the water or instability with other parameters. It’s not easy to bring them back to their original colour and they require a lot of stability to get them going again. I’m trying feeding, fragging and most importantly stability with parameters with varying levels of success, some have regained colour while some are still very brown. #reeftank #coralfragsofinstagram #coralscience #reefaquarium #aquarium #coralreeftanks

This time in “ El Niño explained”, we asked Dr. Ewout, our local scientist: What do we expect this year in terms of bleaching events during El Niño in Kenya? "Coral bleaching typically starts to happen when summer temperatures increase just 1 degree above normal. In Kenya, summer seawater temperatures normally reach around 29 degrees Celsius in April. So, if the water temperature would reach 30 degrees (the local bleaching threshold), the corals will start to struggle. The extent of coral bleaching will depend on both how high the water temperatures will reach and for how long they will exceed the bleaching threshold. Based on the current water temperatures and climate forecasts, it can be predicted how severe the bleaching will be. This is exactly what NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) does for all coral reefs worldwide, and this service is offered for free online! The current predictions are not comforting though, with the highest alert (Alert level 2) given for Kenya (and many other reef countries worldwide) in the coming months. This alert level means that bleaching is very likely and that also coral mortality is to be expected…" #ElNiñoExplained #CoralScience #REEFolution #CoralBleaching #ElNiño #Kenya #NOAA

I have this skull growing Bam Bam Zoas on it for a few years now. I noticed the Zoas in the front side have been closed for a few days now. I thought maybe some fish is bothering them. One early morning I came down to see that winter sun was shining at a different angle than summer, and I must have moved this skull to this position maybe 6 - 7 months ago.... Live and Learn!

#fieldwork was absolutely fantastic this month with this wonderful team from @unisouthpacific - this is part of one of the work packages of my three year project funded by the Australia and Pacific Science Foundation where we are trying to understand the drivers and impacts of benthic cyanobacterial mats on Fiji’s coral reefs. Every month we document reef health along permanently marked areas of four reefs on Fiji’s Coral Coast, and also collect samples of these mats so we can do sequencing to look at their composition. So grateful for the company of these brilliant young scientists from our Marine Science program. Exciting stuff happening in this project this year with three MSc students joining for their MSc theses! #academia #coralscience #fiji #research @bellehennings @samsonlailai @iamjaykiael and vinaka vale levu for the photos and the support @tasereapakuki

Upclose and personal with an Elkhorn colony! Multiple Elkhorn (Acropora palmata) colonies densely packed together is called a thicket. 🪸🪸🪸 Elk horn get their name after their wide set branches, but what you may notice is that the edges of these branches are bright white. This white color is typically an alarm bell for scientists because it may mean the coral is experiencing bleaching or disease. However, in a healthy coral colony this color occurring on the edge of the tissue actually is a sign of growth. This also occurs in several other coral species, especially the Staghorn coral ( Acropora cervicornis). Back in 2021 @colleenflanigan and @solenejriv participated in @plantamillioncorals microfragmentation workshop in Summerland Key, Florida. A very rewarding scholarship! They are so generous. We even set up an experiment w @joey_man91 to test some biopolymer and carbon sequestering substrates made by our remote material science collaborators: Guillermo Torres and Junhua Xiu✨ Link to publication in bio 👓 #microfragmentation #coral #coralrestoration #plantamillioncorals #wetlab #experiment #coralscience #materialscience #corallove #fragging @marinelife_2030 @unoceandecade —

Lil throwback for this Monday! I’m missing being underwater but hope to get my fins wet soon 🤿 I’ve been in the office working on this book a lot lately but I cannot wait to share it with you all this year. 🫧 Needless to say, when you’re diving for work you’re expected to carry a lot of gear on you at once. You can see I have my clipboard, camera, I’m moving this visual marker for taking photogrammetry (the square with the post), along with crimps and some other tools not pictured. We use the photogrammetry markers for taking videos to digitally recreate the reef. This allows us to be able to show the shifts in the ecosystem prior and post coral out-planting. This not only helps the scientists that are actively restoring reef locations but also in the outreach of the public! There are a lot of different reasons that people can’t make it underwater and using this software makes it accessible to see the impact we’re making on a broad scale. #oceanconservation #marinescience #marinebiology #marinebiologist #oceanscience #marineresearch #oceanresearch #marinebiologycareer #marinescientist #ocean #marinelife #saltwater #stem #womeninstem #oceancreatures #oceanlife #marinelife #diveintonature #SeaScience #marinelifemagic #reefrestoration #reefscience #coralscience

This time in “El Niño explained”, we asked Dr. Ewout, our local scientist: What is coral bleaching, how does it work? “ El Niño drives up seawater temperatures globally. When the water gets too hot, corals lose their brilliant colours and turn white (see the 2nd photo), a process known as coral bleaching. It is almost as if the corals are having a fever! In reality, they are actually starving. Normally, colourful microalgae live inside the coral’s tissue. These microalgae get all their food through photosynthesis (just like plants) and they share a large part of their food with the coral animal. In return, the coral allows the microalgae to live safely inside its tissues. This symbiosis gets disrupted when the water temperature gets too high, leaving the corals suddenly without their main food source. If the temperature cools down quickly enough (in weeks to months), the corals will typically survive. But if the temperature increases either too much or for too long, the corals will weaken too much and die. The coral’s skeleton is then often overgrown by algae (last photo) and can erode away in a few years if no new corals are recruited onto the reef.” • • • #ElNiño #ElNiñoExplained #MarineScience #CoralScience #CoralBleaching #Kenya

C𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙛𝙨 𝙛𝙡𝙪𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙜𝙡𝙤𝙬? - “Chasing Coral” a wonderful documentary about the world wide bleaching events were witness to a rare phenomenon of the coral glowing or fluorescing in the spectacular colors shown in the above slides. This is only known to happen weeks after Bleaching Events. Being an indicator species coral are extremely sensitive to temperature or water change. When the water heats and the bleaching occurs the coral is left without their food source. The glowing is to be thought of a way the coral polyps attempt to communicate with and bring back in their symbiotic plankton. Since the species of zooplankton is light sensitive, making the bleached white coral basically inhospitable. This leads scientists speculate on why the coral glow is that it could provide protection from the sun. Keeping the coral and their plankton safer from UV Rays. Not all corals glow though, meaning this topic is still under investigation by experts! - Tags - #bemoralprotectthecoral #coral #coralreef #savetheplanet #savethereef #coralbleaching #coralscience #coralconservation

We are so happy to welcome Lauren Zane to the EcoGeoChem lab! Lauren is a PhD student in the Biological and Environmental Science program. Her research focuses on the coral lipid and fatty-acid metabolism in relation to coral bleaching and recovery. She is excited to connect coral metabolism to larger scale oceanographic processes in the McMahon Lab. Lauren grew up San Diego, California where she explored tide pools and snorkeled rocky reefs before attending UC Berkeley to study Integrative Biology, graduating in 2021. She found her way to graduate school after completing marine biology related internships at the Birch Aquarium, Duke Marine Lab, NOAA and UC Berkeley. Outside of school Lauren enjoys surfing, spearfishing and cooking. Through surfing, she is a passionate advocate for women of color, co-founding the registered nonprofit Colorful Lineup which reduces barriers to surfing and works toward a more inclusive surf community. #womeninstem #coralscience #womeninmarinescience
