During the late 2023 and early 2024 seasons, Seafarer has made significant progress on the Juno Beach Wreck, now called the Juno Beach Archeological Site (JBAS). In addition to receiving one of only two programmatic agreement permits issued for shipwreck exploration by the United States by the US Army Corp of Engineers, one of the more significant artifacts rescued was a 1 Reale Silver Carlos and Joanna coin from the Mexico City Mint. This coin bears distinctive assayer’s marks, placing it firmly as a late series Carlos and Joanna coin minted between 1554 and 1572. While damaged from being on the ocean floor for nearly 500 years, the coin was rescued, carefully conserved, and is now part of the curated Seafarer collection along with over 950 other period artifacts from the JBAS. The Bigeye Thresher Shark (Alopias superciliosus) is a found in temperate and tropical oceans worldwide. Nearly half its total length consists of the elongated upper lobe of the tail fin. It uses its long tail to “whip” and stun its prey before eating it. It’s huge eyes that are adapted for hunting in low light conditions. It is one of the few sharks that conduct a diel vertical migration (staying in deep water during the day and moving into surface waters at night to feed). The Bigeye Thresher Shark is one of three species of Thresher Shark, and by far, the rarest. The deep grooves on its head also set it apart from other Thresher Shark species. Encounters with this alien looking shark in the wild are far and few between. Happy World Tuna Day! What a day to be a tuna scientist. In my totally objective opinion, Atlantic bluefin tuna really are the coolest fish to study. This is an Atlantic bluefin tuna larvae from the Gulf of Mexico that I photographed while working at NOAA @noaa . It’s a postflexion specimen, which means it’s further along in development than the other tuna larvae I tend to see. This is about as big as my larval tuna get! After this stage they can outswim our plankton nets. Even though I am a larval fish person at heart, it has been really interesting to dabble in adult Atlantic bluefin tuna for my thesis work as well. It’s crazy to see the giants these larvae become! Adult Atlantic bluefin tuna can reach ~1500 lbs. They are a super fascinating animal: one of the few species of warm blooded fish, one of the fastest fish, and one of the most highly migratory species. They have two historically accepted spawning grounds in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea. I’ve been studying a newly discovered spawning ground to see how important it is to their population. Our last feature of the #NaturundMedizin series is the glowing crystal jellyfish, 𝘼𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙖! The crystal jellyfish is found in temperate waters of the Pacific Ocean, where its bell can reach 10-20 cm wide. This jellyfish may be nearly transparent, but it can still draw attention with its bioluminescent abilities. This jelly’s glow forms a string of tiny elongated green lights that flicker in specific light organs located around the edge of the jelly’s bell. These organs in particular, caught the interest of scientists that saw their potential for biomedical uses. 𝘼𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙖 has provided not one, but TWO crucial tools to biochemistry and cell biology: the blue-light emitting protein 𝗔𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻 and the famous 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 (𝗚𝗙𝗣). While Aequorin lights through a chemical reaction, GFP exhibits its green fluorescence when exposed to blue and UV light. Today, GFP can be produced through genetic engineering and, since its discovery in the 1960s, completely revolutionized biomedical research, empowering researchers to monitor the formation of blood vessels in cancer tumors, understand how Alzheimer’s impacts brain neurons, and unravel how HIV-infected cells generate new viruses, to name just a few uses. For their discovery and research on GFP, the three researchers Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Tsien were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008. The team is excited to start their work on the effect of #lightpollution on #macroalgae in Penang. For the next six months, Cheow Mei and Max will work on the pioneering topic with the help of @cemacsusm. The team partners have already set up their laboratory and tried to catch some sea urchins (which is actually not so easy because the water is very turbid in Penang). However, the team is making progress and will start their experiments soon.🔬 One of the many special things about the @cemacsusm in Penang is, that the research centre is right in the heart of the Penang National Park, so Cheow Mei and Max have to live with all sorts of animals like lizards and monkeys (slide 4). Another “glowing” shark! 💡 The Chain Catshark (Scyliorhinus retifer) is an absolutely stunning species of Catshark endemic to the west Atlantic. Its stunning pattern helps this sluggish shark blend into the muddy, rock-strewn ocean bottom, where it rests. Chain Catsharks are able to bioflouresce, which refers to refraction of light through metabolites in their skin. Under UV/blue light, some species of benthic sharks are able to bioflouresce like this. It's Fun Facts Friday and today's subject is the Humpack Whale 🐋 Did you know that a full grown Humpback Whales are able to launch 40% or more of their bodies out of the water when they breach. Using the power of their tail, they use two to three strokes to launch out of the water at 28,552 kilograms of force. Humpack Whales have unique identification marks on the underside of their tail fluke's the same as each of us having unique fingerprints. Humpbacks have been identified using these individual markings. For a fun thing and also a great research tool, you can upload photographs of a Humpback Tail to the website Happy Whale. Your images are then either matched to other photographs on the database or if there are no matches it is given an identification number. If you submit photographs to Happy Whale, you will get notifications when other people have submitted images and the location of the whale is recorded. Also called the mangrove tunicate, this amazing marine invertebrate lives as a dense cluster of barrel-shaped zooids on seagrass or the submerged roots of mangroves, hence its name. Despite its tiny size (each zooid typically measures no more than 2 cm - roughly the size of a peanut), this creature packs a powerful punch in fighting cancer. It produces a compound known as 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻, which has shown great effectiveness against a number of cancers! While initially challenging to achieve large-scale production of the drug due to the animal’s small size, scientists have successfully synthesized 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻, making it available in over 78 countries. 🌊Fun fact: Did you know sea squirts are your closest invertebrate relatives? Celebrate Earth Day… Every day! Protecting Earth and her resources for ourselves and future generations is everyone’s responsibility. Climate change is a fact and the evidence of humans’ responsibility for it is beyond debate. I have worked in marine research for over forty years and in just my lifetime I have witnessed the extraordinary changes in the coastal waters of New England. Temperatures have risen, species composition and numbers have dramatically changed. We see new species thriving here that were never here before, displacing and eliminating native species. We can debate what to do about it, but there is no debating that it is happening. I do believe that each of us can contribute to the solution by the choices we make. My home is largely powered by rooftop solar panels, my lights are all LED and appliances are all energy efficient. New research from @univmiami reveals that leatherback sea turtles undertake extensive migrations across the Atlantic, with their journeys along the US east coast tracked. This study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, identifies crucial foraging hotspots including the South Atlantic Bight, Mid-Atlantic Bight, and southern New England. The Ornate Eagle Ray (Aetomylaeus vespertilio) is an extremely rare species of Eagle Ray. They can attain a max disk width (wingtip-to-wingtip) size of up to 3.5m (11.4 ft), and can reach a total length of up to 6m (20 ft). There have been less than “60 recorded sightings worldwide.” Despite its wide range, it is rarely observed, with reports suggesting that this is due to a large population decline within the “past three generations.” This is largely attributed to the increase in bottom trawling and net fisheries, which has become prevalent across their range. Once caught, they are usually kept and sold in fish markets.
