Using a 1/16th saw blade on the table saw I cross-cut strips to fit between the banding, from old thick Mahogany veneer to create the cross grain center of the edge banding. The strips were marked to keep the proper grain orientation so there was no difference in refection/color. Thanks to a posting by @librarycompany of Philadelphia - second image - I now have a precedent for a Flower of Life design that is rotated from a static vertical/horizontal axis to one where the design is aligned within a square that contains it. This fractur commemorates the birth of Rahel Summerin, born November 7, 1765, three years before the case for the George Hoff clock - seen in the first image - was constructed in 1768. I find that due to the hectic final days of the @centerforartinwood WARP Fellowship this summer and the following weeks of catching up with work afterwards I haven’t mentioned my most recent article on a George Hoff clock and case in the Dietrich American Foundation collection published in InCollect Magazine (formerly Antiques & Fine Art Magazine.) The title says it all. (Well, almost.) Recently I saw a post from @tobiaslochnerza where he showed a little block plane from @bridgecitytoolworks . I hadn't seen this one before and thought it would be a nice addition to my collection. This little alumium plane has a special feature ; two skids on the sides with wich you can adjust the planing height. This makes it work like a mini thicknesser, ideal for planing delicate inlays to thickness. It is a bevel- up plane with an a2 blade. The primary bevel is 25 degree with a 30 degree micro-bevel. It has an adjustable mouth. With the skids raised up you can use this plane as a normal blockplane but would I do this ? No I don't think so. The lightweight alumium body takes more effort to push the plane forward due to lack of mass. In addition, the small size makes it more difficult to hold. I would rather choose a normal blockplane with a steel body in that case. I'm very fond of tambour doors. The illusion of a rigid material, seemingly flexible, disappearing out of sight, bending around corners. When considering what to do with the upper drawer of each chest, I wanted to diverge from the convention of a pop-up mirror and lidded compartments. Thought I would create tambour lidded side boxes with sliding jewellery trays and a central compartment with a sliding lid instead. The top centre drawer features (probably) Blackbean banded inlay, and (possibly) Blackwood crossbanding applied to each drawer. We are currently restoring this 17th Century longcase clock, which suffered significant damage following a fire. In addition to treating the wood for smoke damage, we are also replacing missing sections of the marquetry. Oliver has now applied the sand-shaded sycamore marquetry sections we previously showed him cutting out, along with a stained pear wood background. The next stage of treatment will be to apply further sycamore decoration, which will complete the join from old to new, then apply a walnut crossbanding to the border.
