Cuando la joven artista HELENE FUNKE dejó su hogar en la ciudad industrial de Chemnitz en 1899 para inscribirse en la Academia de Arte para Mujeres de Múnich, fue un paso audaz, casi inaudito, para una joven de esa época. Pero Helene fue mas allá, en 1906 se trasladó a París, donde vivió y trabajó en el corazón de Montmartre. Emocionada por la modernidad de la ciudad y su nueva libertad, absorbió todas las nuevas direcciones artísticas que se exploraban en ese momento, en particular el fauvismo de Henri Matisse y André Derain. Esas influencias transformaron fundamentalmente su propio estilo de pintura. A partir de entonces, Funke empleó colores explosivos y líneas claras y decididas, aplicando la pintura en capas gruesas. :: A pesar de las críticas positivas de los críticos, que escribieron que las obras de Funke eran una “ verdadera explosión de color ”, la audacia de Helene, al adoptar un estilo excepcionalmente moderno, provocó palabras llenas de odio en la prensa: “ Estas imágenes pintadas toscamente por la mano de una mujer, como un albañil con su paleta, son aborrecibles". :: Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los encargos de pintura de Funke se agotaron. This is probably my favorite image that I’ve ever taken on Black and White 35mm film. This image means a lot to me because of the sheer emotion expressed by everyone in the moment. Developing this roll and scanning the negatives was peaceful as the dark room always is. But the detail captured and having a physical connection to this makes it so much more special. This was my Final Project for my Intro to Photo class at NWC. This assignment was to create a body of work that consisted of 4 images, your choice of subject matter. I went through a lot of ideas and after serious consideration I decided that I wanted to do a line of potraits. This project in large part took inspiration from William B Woody who introduced and ultimately led me to attending NWC.
