If you’ve seen the trailer or heck just read the plot description of ‘Arthur The King’ then you know what to expect from it and exactly how it’s going to end, it’s the only reason it was even made. It’s the classic uplifting inspirational story of an animal helping a person or team believe in themselves in the face of adversity. These films are crowd pleasers, and this is no different, I had a great time with this. Now going into this, I had no idea that not only was this film in the motherland, Dominican Republic, but that it also takes place there, and I’ll be perfectly honest, as a Dominican this flick gained a lot of points from me due to that as it was great seeing my country have such a big role in a big production. It tells the true story of Mikael Lindnord, a pro adventure racer who is attempting a Dominican Republic endurance race 435 miles in 5 days. Along the way, he comes across a stray dog he names Arthur and together along with his teammates rally around their dog as they attempt to win. Simon Cellan Jones’ direction is solid, he keeps the film moving smoothly investing us in the story to have the triumphant moments hit their intended purpose. The highlight of his direction is a zip lining sequence where the team needs to do it in order to get to the other side. . It starts off fun before it got intense, and he did a great job having us on the edge, even if we knew how it would play out for the most part. Like most dog films, they make you feel a ton of emotions, and you’re just hoping the dog doesn’t die at the end of the film. Ukai, who plays Arthur was as great as you could hope from a dog performance, hitting you in the feels and he gives a jolt of life to the film when he joins the team halfway through the film. Mark Wahlberg has been on a super cold streak for a few years now, mainly doing streaming films whether through Netflix, Apple TV+ or Paramount+, but it’s one of his better performances in the last few years. Yesterday I knew there was something about April 22 that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Hit me today that it was the 14th anniversary of witnessing the semi-submersible drilling rig "Deep Water Horizon" sink. Watched from the port wing of the M/V Resolve Pioneer as the rig slipped under the waves. In March 2024, about a dozen scientists and crew members ventured into the Gulf of Mexico armed with an underwater rover, crab traps, and other research kit. Led by Craig McClain, a deep-sea biologist at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the team set out to study the site where, on April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing 11 workers and setting off one of the worst environmental disasters in US history.⁠ ⁠ It was McClain’s third trip to the disaster’s ground zero, and despite the 14 years that have elapsed, he found that wildlife surrounding the exploded wellhead was still suffering. The absence of life is noticeable, says McClain, and what is there doesn’t seem healthy.⁠ ⁠ Unlike other wrecks, which tend to become habitats for marine species over time, the sunken Deepwater Horizon has remained comparatively sterile. Organisms that typically inhabit the Gulf’s seafloor—such as sea cucumbers, giant isopods, corals, and sea anemones—are simply missing, says McClain. Perhaps more concerning are the crabs. Naturally red, the crabs McClain and his team pulled up in their traps were tinted an oily black; many were also missing legs, while others had lesions.⁠ ⁠ When disaster first struck, scientists and locals couldn’t help but notice the mass die-offs of dolphins, pelicans, oysters, and other marine species. April 20th: The Deepwater Horizon rig explodes. On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon disaster occurred. Owned by Transocean and operated by BP, the Deepwater Horizon was a semi-submersible offshore drilling rig designed to collect oil from within the ocean floor. In September of 2009, the rig drilled the deepest oil well to date in the Tiber Oil Field of Keathley Canyon, in the Gulf of Mexico, at over 35 thousand feet deep. On April 20th, 2010, a geyser erupted from the marine riser, spewing mud, water, and methane gas onto the rig. The gas soon ignited into a massive firestorm that engulfed the rig. Attempts were made to activate the blowout preventer and blind shear ram on the rig, but both failed. 11 personnel were killed in the explosion and fire, while the remaining crew were evacuated. After two days of inextinguishable fire, the Deepwater Horizon collapsed and sank into the ocean, resulting in the largest marine oil spill in history. It was later revealed that certain safety documents pertaining to regular inspections and maintenance concerned with the rig were incomplete, with around 25% of inspection records after the first 40 months of operations omitted and the last three inspections conducted in 2010 only taking a maximum of two hours to complete. Today marks 14 years since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. On April 20, 2010, the BP exploratory rig Deepwater Horizon exploded, killing 11 workers and setting off the largest oil spill in U.S. history. Oil gushed from the seafloor for 87 days, ultimately spewing more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Such a tragic event really reminds us of how important Belize’s marine ecosystems are. That is why in December 2017, Belize legislated an indefinite moratorium against offshore oil exploration. Then in late 2023, Belize also passed a landmark amendment requiring that any decision to open its ocean to oil and gas drilling must first be approved by the Belizean people. On this day in 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig suffered massive explosions and tragically killed 11 and injured 16 of its 126-person crew. An accident of this magnitude had been unprecedented, nevertheless, the Coast Guard mobilized 14% of its workforce to initiate response efforts to contain and clean up the oil spill. As we reflect on this significant day in history and approach Earth Day, we’d like to take a moment to recognize the impact the Coast Guard has had on environmental protection and safety. 14 years ago today, an explosion on BP's offshore oil rig #DeepwaterHorizon caused the biggest #oilspill in American history. Chris Reddy, a #WHOI marine chemist who was part of the 2011 scientific response team, says that the disaster left an important legacy: research into the fate of oil– and #plastic– in the ocean.⁠ ⁠ "One of the most significant research findings from Deepwater Horizon was the role of sunlight in degrading oil," Reddy says. Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig owned by Transocean and operated by BP. On 20 April 2010, while drilling at the Macondo Prospect, a blowout caused an explosion on the rig that killed 11 crewmen and ignited a fireball visible from 40 miles (64 km) away.
