Norm Ullman and Guy Trottier assisted the PPG scored against Rogie Vachon. * As an extension of yesterday's post, Dupéré was obtained by the Maple Leafs on May 14th, 1970, as the future considerations for sending Tim Horton to the NYR on March 3rd, 1970. * Dupéré played 421 games in the NHL with Toronto (192GP), Washington (53GP), St. Louis (22GP), Kansas City (43GP), and Colorado Rockies (111GP). * Dupéré was claimed by the Washington Capitals in '74 expansion draft. * Dupéré scored 2 goals against Mike Veisor on Oct. 17th, 1974, in the franchises 1st victory. Washington defeated Chicago Black Hawks 4-3 at the Capital Center. * Dupéré was the 1st Capitals player to represent the franchise in an NHL all-star game on Jan. 21st, 1975, at the Montreal Forum. November 17, 1955 #OTD Dennis Maruk, Canadian former professional ice hockey player of Ukrainian descent. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1975 to 1989, scoring a career-high 60 goals for the Washington Capitals in 1981–82. Maruk played junior "A" hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for the London Knights before he was drafted in 1975 by the California Golden Seals. While with the Seals, he became the first NHL rookie to score five shorthanded goals in a season. Maruk followed the franchise when it relocated to Cleveland to become the Cleveland Barons a year later. Maruk's rights were later obtained by the Minnesota North Stars after the Barons merged with them in 1978, but he was traded shortly afterwards to the Washington Capitals. During his time with the Capitals, he scored 50 goals in 1980-81 and 60 goals in 1981-82; his mark of 76 assists and 136 points in the 1982 season remain Capitals' records for a single-season. Maruk was the first Capitals player to score 100 points in a season. In 1982-83, Maruk was one of the players instrumental in leading the Capitals to their first playoff appearance. Despite this, he was traded back to the North Stars where he would finish his career. At the time of his retirement in 1989, he was the last active NHL player to have played for the Seals/Barons franchise, although Charlie Simmer played later than him in minor leagues. Maruk was also the last Minnesota North Stars player to wear the number 9 prior to Mike Modano. In 888 NHL games, he scored 356 goals and had 522 assists. * * ON THIS DATE * Sept.20th, 2000 * NHL hockey returned to the state of OHIO when the Columbus Blue Jackets played their 1st pre-season game at Nationwide Arena. Blue Jackets defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 in front of 18,136 fans. * Cleveland Barons played their final hockey game April 9th, 1978 at Richfield Coliseum. Barons were defeated by Denis Heron and the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. Dennis Maruk scored both goals while Randy Holt (Barons all time penalty leader) and J.P. Parise were called for 2 minor penalty infractions. Gilles Meloche took the loss in goal for the Barons. * Meloche along with Gary Edwards and Gary Simmons were the only 3 goalies to play for the Cleveland Barons. * Dennis Maruk was the Barons all time scoring leader. He would be the last active Baron (and Golden Seal) player in the NHL. Maruk retired after the '98-'99 season. * In their final 40 home games, the Barons only drew over 10,000 fans in 7 games. * The Minnesota North Stars and Cleveland Barons merged and that was the end of hockey in OHIO. * Blue Jackets have a nice following and the cannon in the arena is a pretty cool, unique tradition. Ownership would be controlled by the GUND family. * Of the 4 major sports, this is the last franchise to cease operations. * The SEALS moved to Cleveland on July 14th, 1976 in Hope's of saving the franchise. * BARONS played their home games at the Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio. This was 1/2 hr drive south from downtown Cleveland. * Gary Sabourin "We had the big cavernous building in the middle of a corn field and we couldn't draw flies". * Gilles Meloche on his favorite BARONS memory, "I got to see Elvis Presley in concert, we had great seats, right by the stage". * GM's: Bill McCreary, Harry Howell. Head Coach: Jack Evans, Co- Captains; Jim Neilson, Bob Stewart. * Al MacAdam was the only BARON to play all 160 games in their 2 seasons.
