Derby Gaol. This imposing frontage, is all that remains of the former Derby Gaol on South Street in Friargate district. Sometime after the Gaol closed, the site was cleared, eventually becoming Derby's Greyhound Stadium with a BMX Track added later. The stadium closed around the end of the 1980's, and was redeveloped into Vernon Gate Business Park. Apparently, the old dog kennels were positioned to the rear of the site, close by the railway. Whenever trains passed by, it set all the dogs barking, much to the annoyance of local lresidents, especially at night! Note: The building next to the prison features due to the similarity in architectural style. Their attractive leafy setting belies their grim history, being provided so that people could gather there to witness public excursions at the adjacent Gaol. Derby is the town where you would either start or finish The Gibb River Road. 1/2/3: 𝙎𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 on the southern side of the marsh. 4: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝘽𝙤𝙖𝙗 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙚 Before Derby was established in 1883, Aboriginal people were kidnapped from the West Kimberley. The kidnappers known as blackbirders, were settlers who were connected to the pearling industry. They wanted divers and workers for the pearling boats. They rounded people up, put them in chains and marched them to the coast. Some were held captive at the Boab Prison Tree while they waited for a boat. They were brought from as far away as Fitzroy Crossing and were made to walk in chains from 24-48 kilometres per day. 🥲 5: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝘿𝙚𝙧𝙗𝙮 𝙂𝙖𝙤𝙡 The original two small cells were constructed in 1880’s by prisoners in chain gangs using corrugated iron and mud bricks. After a hard days labour they were crammed into cells and shackled to the ring bolts attached to the floor. 🥲 6: 𝙁𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙮’𝙨 𝙋𝙤𝙤𝙡 Constructed in 1944 by personnel from the 125th Australian General Transport Company for relaxing and bathing. 7: 𝙈𝙮𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝘽𝙤𝙧𝙚 The existing concrete trough was built in 1916/17 for watering cattle en route to Derby for shipment. Come and join us on the 19th March at this amazing location. With famous historian Richard Felix. Your evening will start at 8.30pm and finish at 2am. Richard will take you on a walk and tour through the Gaol, this will be then followed by an investigation of the location. Also includes * Human Pendulum * EVP * Lone Vigils And much more. The cost is £45pp. Deposit option available. Bit of history Gallows and a guillotine are the first things that meet your eyes as you step across the threshold of Derby Gaol. A sinister figure stands guard as you make your way inside the blood-curdling belly of the site. Bricks line all the walls and curve around you above and they are broken only by the cell doors with their clanking, clunking bolts. Etched into the doors are the names of those who have served within their walls, along with "witch marks" carved into the wood in the hope of protecting prisoners from evil spirits, as well as engravings of gallows and of themselves getting hanged. The distant gleam of small electric lanterns loom in menace as you make you way down the corridors that are teaming with the memories of echoed screams, tears and despair of those convicts who have gone before. Derby Gaol is a funny old place. It’s a museum, former nightclub, and one of the most popular places for paranormal hire in the UK. Opened in 1756, the jail is now a small museum - the old cells are repurposed as exhibition spaces with a vast array of related memorabilia scattered across the cold, dank rooms.
