On a beautiful spring day this weekend, we attended the unveiling of the Dinah Memorial by Philadelphia artist @KarynOlivier at the @StentonMuseum in Germantown. The memorial, titled “Right Here,” is Philadelphia’s first monument dedicated to a formerly enslaved woman, and part of a years-long community engagement discussion funded by @pewcenterarts. Dinah was an enslaved woman in the 18th century who lived and worked at Stenton, the home of William Penn’s secretary, James Logan. On April 15, 2023, Stenton celebrated the very first Dinah Day! On that exact date in 1776, Dinah gained her freedom after making demands to the Logan family. Much like Juneteenth in Galveston, Texas, Dinah Day represents an important moment in hyperlocal history towards liberation for enslaved Africans in the United States. Although Dinah was no longer tied to Stenton, she remained as a paid worker until her 1805 death. As part of the Dinah Project research, Stenton staff found an entry in Deborah Norris Logan’s pocket almanac, noting Dinah’s death and her request to be buried at Stenton. While the exact location of her burial is unknown at this time, Deborah Logan’s garden was off the east side of the house, not far from where the Dinah Memorial now stands in conversation with the James Logan Memorial. Entitled RIGHT HERE by Karyn Olivier, the Dinah Memorial is situated just inside Stenton’s main gate on 18th Street. Its benches and reflecting basin, its sense of enclosure and inclusion, invite all Stenton visitors to sit with and reflect on Dinah’s heroism, Dinah’s legacy, and her whole personhood. The Memorial asks questions, provoking us to reflect on and receive all that has happened, all that is, and all that will become of our shared future. Due to the pandemic, community meetings were put on hold, memorial construction was delayed, and costs began to climb. In the meantime, Dinah’s story was still being shared, and another longtime memorializing effort was realized in Stenton Park! The Dinah Mural on the Stenton Park Recreation Center, by artist Russell Craig, was unveiled in September 2022 through partnership with the Stenton Park Advisory Council, the Recreation Center, and Mural Arts. Recreating Dinah’s Story - Storyteller Irma Gardner-Hammond has portrayed Dinah and told her story for over 20 years. Irma was an artist-in-residency for the duration of the project to incorporate new research into her performance. Writer Robert Branch and actor Marissa Kennedy joined forces with Irma to author and direct a new video performance called “Remember My Name: Dinah’s Story.” Though originally conceived as an in-person performance, with Irma as Dinah and Marissa as an understudy, the script evolved as a conversation between an older and a younger Dinah sharing their life. The Covid-19 lockdown forced us to create a video version of this performance, which is available at https://www.stenton.org/remember-my-name along with a recorded panel discussion with the actors and writer.
