This sets the tone for the rest of their lives. Itโs not all in how you raise them. Backyard breeders are a huge part of why we have so many unhealthy, behaviourally unstable dogs and our shelters are over run. So how can you tell the difference between them?? Ethical breeders are breeding solely for the betterment of the breed. Backyard breeders are breeding for income. Ethical breeders put loads of money into extensive health testing (OFA, Pennhip X-rays for conditions such as hip & elbow dysplasia, genetic markers for breed prevalent disorders, ophthalmic exams, cardiac exams, and more). They put loads of time and money into matching dams and sires, whelping, socializing their puppies, and performing temperament tests. Backyard breeders MIGHT do an embark panel. This isnโt enough. They will typically not have a contract that includes a health guarantee or a clause stating if for any reason you canโt keep the puppy, they must be returned to the breeder. If they breed โdesigner dogsโ, theyโre a backyard breeder. Doodles are the most well known, but any breed mix created for aesthetics, because โtheir dogs are nice or cuteโ or being โhypoallergenicโ are designer dogs. They do not take into account the parents temperaments or the genetic drives of the contributing breeds, and as a result we get tons of genetically conflicted, reactive, aggressive, fearful etc dogs. They may send their puppies to their new homes too early, or sell littermates together. If they breed specifically for โrare coloursโ and/or charge more for these colours, they are backyard breeders. Dilute colours often come with chronic skin issues, and double merle can come with eye deformities and deafness. Selecting for colours not standard in the breed is not breeding for the betterment of the breed. A lot of dogs struggle with simple everyday things like going up and down stairs, jumping in the car, slippery floors etc because no one has ever pushed them to overcome. Your dog can gain a lot of confidence if you believe in them and help them through (seemingly) difficult things. All dogs should learn how to go up and down stairs, through scary thresholds, walk on uneven or slippery surfaces, jump in the car etc. Focus on installing powerful markers, ensure your dogs motivation levels are high, play with your dog, take them new places and experience things together! Ps an additional thing I thought of is muscle tone! Dogs who lack muscle tone can struggle more with these things (and vice versa) and I think there is a co relation.
