If you've lost your mother, this weekend is often a weekend of reflection on her life and what your mother meant and still means to you today. This is the last picture I took with both my parents together and the last picture with my mom. This was the day of my Nursing Pinning Ceremony, a joyous day indeed. What's not pictured here is her portable oxygen tank. She took the nasal cannula off of her nose right before we took the photo. When I think about this moment, I think about my mom's perseverance. No matter what she was dealing with, an autoimmune disease that was causing her health to decline, she fought through that and made sure she was there to support her children. She attended my graduation which was outdoors, under the oaks at Dillard while being rolled in a wheelchair because she couldn't walk very far without having breathing issues. About 6 months later on November 3, 2003, my mother passed away, she left us in this life but her spirit lives on in me and my siblings. Her perseverance, her strength, her tenacity, her kindness, and gentleness, and her love for God and family. So, in case you wonder how I can muster up the strength to take life's challenges and keep going, I get it from my momma. Dear Overcoming Woman, Sometimes you have to remind yourself that those things you're going through aren't for nothing. When you can't see your way out of your circumstances, remind yourself of God's promises. Happy Monday Overcomer! Thought it was a good time to introduce myself to my new followers and remind those of you who have been following me for a while that you can overcome any challenge that comes your way. In 2015, I was at my lowest. After working so hard and thriving in my career as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I suffered major medical complications after a procedure. My vocal cords were paralyzed, I went into respiratory failure, and I was mute. My life as I knew it had changed in a manner of hours. I went under anesthesia as a healthy woman in her 30's and I woke up in Intensive care on a ventilator. I was at my lowest, depressed, and I wanted to die. BUT GOD! 🙌🏾God came and gave me another purpose. I began to write ✍️ I published my first book and felt that inner strength coming back. I published again and again and I began to help other black women become published authors. And Strength Builders Publishing was born. God gives the gift of writing to build strength in the writer as well as the reader. If God gave you that gift, USE IT and set yourself free. Transparent Post: Hey Strength Builders! I usually post tips for authors on Tuesdays but the Lord led me to share. I took this selfie on Monday (yesterday) on my way back from DC, helping my oldest daughter move into her apartment to start her Junior year at Howard University. I'm super proud of my girl! I will post the reel later of highlights from our weekend. This is the face of a woman who is exhausted and challenged on every side BUT GOD is her keeper. The events that led up to this weekend were challenging to say the least. My husband was hospitalized, two days later my son had to undergo surgery and in the midst of all this, I hadn't gotten much sleep. It seemed like the whole world was turning upside down and we had to figure out how we would get our daughter settled in at school. By Friday, everything had calmed down and everyone was recovering well so I felt comfortable leaving. Even through the challenges, my daughter and I had a great weekend and although we didn't have my husband to help us move the heavy stuff, God made a way and all things fell in place. I want to encourage you to know that no matter how hard of a challenge you might be facing right now, don't give up. Don't give up on God, don't give up on your life, don't give up on your dreams. We post on social media, make funny videos, but you never know the challenges a person is fighting to get through behind the scenes. A wise woman once told me that he gives his biggest challenges to his toughest soldiers. You can and you will, WE WILL make it!! I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself to my new followers. First and foremost, Thank You, for seeing something in me that resonated with you and clicking the follow button. I'm Dr. Evona Lee Smith, believer, wife, mother of 5, grandmother of 2, nurse practitioner, doctor of nursing practice, author, & owner of Strength Builders Publishing LLC. In 2015, I experienced a debilitating medical complication after a procedure and my vocal cords were paralyzed. I was mute for 6 months, had a tracheotomy placed in my neck that stayed in place for 2 years and was removed after about 6 procedures in a two year time frame. I was left with a permanent disabling breathing condition which halted my practice in the profession that I worked so hard to excel in. I struggled with Depression while trying to put the pieces of my life back together. Through it all, God gave me a new purpose to pursue my love for writing. In 2020, I published my first children's book, Sophia's Pandemic World. Since then, I have published 10 children's books and journals and I've helped 13 other underrepresented authors to publish through my company, Strength Builders Publishing LLC. My mission is to publish books that focus on mental & physical health for children & adults and to empower underrepresented aspiring authors to become published authors. The morrow of the story is that no matter how hard your situation may seem, God can repurpose your life! Happy Wednesday! Nearly 4 million children in the U.S. are affected with anxiety and nearly 2 million are affected by depression. These are large numbers and not counting the undiagnosed or misdiagnosed children out there. If your child has anxiety or depression, it's these are some important things for you to know. They’re Not Faking I know, this is a tough one because kids do fake things, but anxiety attacks aren’t typically one of them. If your child or teenager has periods of time where they just seem to break down, ask yourself, “How would this actually help them?” LISTEN TO THEM They Don’t Want To Do This Children with mental illness know most kids their age aren’t curling up into the fetal position, rocking back and forth, sucking their thumb, twirling their hair, biting their fingernails, etc. They know they’re different and they don’t want to be different. They’re not trying to embarrass you. It’s Not Your Fault So give yourself some grace and don’t blame yourself. When you do, you might actually find it hurts your child even more as those with anxiety and/or depression tend to blame themselves for a lot of things anyways. This could lead to them not sharing their feelings with you as they don’t want to make you feel poorly about yourself. They Need Your Help Sometimes it’s easy to say, “I don’t know what to do. So I’ll do nothing.” But that’s not good enough! I know, it’s hard. You may not understand what’s going on. You’re frustrated. Your child may act out in anger and tell you they don’t want you around. The most powerful thing that has helped me the fight through Depression is reading and meditating on the Word of God. When I feel overwhelmed, I speak the Word over myself! The scriptures have gotten me through some of the darkest days of my life and here is one that inspires me and I pray that it inspires you today. Find a scripture that encourages you, put it on your mirror, dashboard in your car, at your desk at work, and recite it to yourself throughout the day especially when you feel weak and watch God give you strength.
