One of my newest (The last photo is the work in the studio, in progress) 48x40 oil on wood 2023 I remember listening to a contemporary art podcast out of Chicago years ago called Bad At Sports. Not sure if it’s still going but they had some great guests and I can’t remember who said it but one prominent artist said something that I’ll always remember, and it isn’t always easy to do. It’s advice he gives to young artists. He said to try to identify what you ACTUALLY, really, care about. ACTUALLY. Like REALLY actually. You really have to stop and think long and hard. Not what you’re supposed to care about. Not what others deem important. What do YOU actually care about. When I try to do this it feels like there are so many layers to fight through; I picture it like a thick, semi-impermeable, floating crust of garbage and detritus and cultural debris on the surface, under which lies maybe some purer, maybe more innocent, clearer water (I’m trying to get there now, as I write this haha)… clearer as in truer to me, not polluted by all the things I am supposed to care about as a good modern human and contemporary artist trained in philosophy and art history and addicted to my phone. It may not be one thing; it could be many, but if you take some time (and it can take a while sometimes) to really think about it, and try to get below that crust, you might be surprised what is actually under there. I once called a painting “The first painting of the rest of my life”, because it was a complete break from why I had been doing for years, and was a new and exciting, completely surprising and open ended feeling; i didn’t know what was going on but it was brand new territory. The painting I’m working on now could also be called that, but for the opposite kind of reason. It feels more like a culmination of everything I’ve done, starting to come together more successfully (I hope; it’s not finished yet so #🤞). After a few weeks of doing smaller studies and experiments and lots of thinking and reading old sketchbooks and listening to old voice memos full of painting ideas it felt time to start another big one. #4x5. “Don’t think twice, it’s alright” oil on wood panel 60x48 inches 2022 Done!! Thanks everyone for your comments and insights when I posted the in-progress version of this a couple of days ago, and especially all your diverse interpretations (always a good sign!) When my daughter came in to the studio the other day her reaction to this painting made me cry! She knows how much it means to me to start painting this way again after about 20 years of doing other things. And she loved it. A lot. We talked a lot about it and she asked me what I was going to call it and, as you may know, almost all my titles are song lyrics from music I listen to while painting. Bob Dylan was on my speaker just when she asked and Bob was singing: “I give her my heart but she wanted my soul, But don't think twice, it's all right” I always try to steer clear of titles that lead the viewer too much, and the words heart and soul seemed too strong or coercive, so I went with that second line. It can mean so many things with regard to this painting… There’s this misconception amongst some of the art viewing public that every painting is something to “get”, to ”understand”, when half the time the artist doesn’t even know. And if they do, that’s still only their own interpretation. But the main thing is that no matter how much theory and history and philosophy might be involved in getting me to the point to be able to make this painting, it’s still just something anyone can look at and take from whatever they want. And it’s almost always a feeling that makes a viewer want to look further. If that feeling isn’t there, who cares, right? Don’t think twice, it’s alright. #BrunoTheBabyBeerCat’s parents will never turn down an opportunity to add some @eqbrewery into our lives. So when friends @wade0420 @cjcf76 offered to pick up some for us last weekend we were ecstatic. The two bottles are a much anticipated @the8thstatebrewing collaboration, Dual Singularity. This Imperial stout has Fiji and Bolivia cacoa nibs, Madagascar and Tahitian Vanilla and 30 lbs of Black and White Cookies, with a touch of lactose added. The four pack on top is the return TIPA, Laboratory Waves 🔬 🌊. While the second four pack is the return of DIPA dhop 6 (aka DDH Mc2 😉).
