Wicked Weed Guilty Pleasures S’mores and a Mr. Cigars maduro in lancero vitola. The beer which clocked in at an ambitious 12.2% ABV, was brewed with cacao nibs, brown sugar, honey, vanilla, and chocolate and produced a murky coffee brown body with a papery thin head the color of unbleached linen. Initial tastes were of Nestle’s Chocolate Quik mixed with vanilla soy milk – a quite muted impression, especially for a pastry stout. The mouthfeel was also curiously thin considering the style, but the high alcohol level was very well hidden. The cigar, purchased at Mr. Cigars in Little Havana, Miami, was created by Fernando Morales, a native Cuban and a third-generation cigar roller. His cigar boutique is one to seek out when in South Florida as the customer service, selection and atmosphere are all top shelf. While I am unsure of the makeup of the blend, it’s fair to assume that it’s from a mixed country origin with Nicaragua and the DR represented. The smoke was medium-full flavor and full strength. The burnline was dead nuts and produced a light grey flaky ash. While there were no major flavor transitions, a taste imbued with the character and depth of burning hardwood - think maple or oak – along with rain-soaked earth after a summer storm was pervasive and more than enjoyable as the cigar’s flavors compensated some for the relatively suppressed flavors of the stout. So, in sum, I’d say that this pairing dispatched a simple, but elegant, stick that elevated a slight pretender of a brew. I tried a flight of (from left to right): - Goddamnit Kyle 7.5% sour, like a bowl of fruity pebbles, not overly sour. Rated a 3.5. - Pineapple Express/ 420 strawberry, 8.5% Dipa. Tropical & juicy pineapple w/ a burst of hemp flavor and aroma. Rated 2.5. - La Flama Blanca, 6% golden stout. Probably my favorite of the evening. It’s April, but this is one of the best beers I’ve had this year and will likely rank top 10 come New Year’s. Private Press blended three separate imperial stouts and aged them in Heaven Hill, Blanton’s, Basil Hayden, and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked barrels resulting in a thick, barrel-forward stout… a culmination of many years of work. This is what would happen if BBT and 2019 Double Barrel BCBS had a baby. This beer pours a viscous consistency. Dark like motor oil with little to no head retention. It’s a thing of beauty. A roasty, fudge character you tend to find in BBT. Think of a dark chocolate covered marshmallow. Whilst maintaining that signature barrel and tobacco presence you find in a Double Barrel Bourbon County. You’re hit with waves of coconut and dark fruits with every sip. And best of all, there’s no adjuncts. Holy shit. Thanks @kapskup for sending me this world class stout all the way from California. This one is a full bodied dark stout with notes of roast, coffee + dark chocolate. Bitterness is balanced against the booziness, all of which is enveloped in a rich, bold body and creamy mouthfeel; subtle traces of caramel + treacle appear as the beer approaches cellar temperature.

Collabor8 - 11% Texan BBQ Export Stout from @brewyorkbeer and 8 other breweries that I've tagged but I'm not going to list here. I'm not sure if I'd have guessed this was supposed to be a BBQ sauce flavoured stout if I came at this blind, I think I'd have said it was a mexican mole stout, there's smoked cinnamon and dark chocolate, hints of chilli peppers (regular readers will know I am never satisfied by the levels of spice in beers so this may be more than a hint for other people) and sweet demerara sugar. This absolutely doesn't taste like 11% either, dangerous. Regardlesss of the upcoming warmer days in Berlin, it is time for my newest brew: Irish Dry Stout! I used 60 % pale malt, 25 % flaked barley, 10 % roasted barley and 5 % acidulated malt to get a little bit of the Guinness-tang 😆 ... and received 11,4 °P of dark - nearly black - wort. For bittering I used "target" targeting 35 IBUs (pun intended 🫣 ) for first wort hopping. The result is roasty but in my opinion not to harsh, but maybe it could there could be a little bit more body. The after taste seems a bit to thin for my taste. Draughted with nitrogen could make the difference and giving the impression of more body then just carbon dioxide.
