A snippet from a plea made in the columns of The Tribune to make the Lohri a gazetted court holiday by the Punjab Chiefs Court Lahore. Printed in ‘The Tribune’. January 13, 1917. The news read, “Lohri, which has been celebrated as a court holiday since the advent of the British, has recently been removed from the list of major court holidays. It is not a religious festival of any particular community, but a seasonal festival celebrated equally by Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. It is a mid-winter day, widely celebrated by the agricultural classes of the province. But sadly they are deprived of its full enjoyment and are forced to leave their homes to attend the courts at their respective headquarters in Lahore.” In modern times, Lohri is a public holiday in East Punjab and other North Indian states. ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਿੱਸਾ ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਕਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਰਿਫ਼ (1836 - 1904) ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬੀ ਸੰਸਕਰਣ ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਅਕਬਰ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਨਕਾਲ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਇੱਕ ਬਾਗ਼ੀ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਅਮੀਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲ ਲੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਗਰੀਬ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਗਵਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਲਾਮਾਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਵੇਚੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਗਰੀਬ ਲੋਕ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਦਰਿਆ-ਦਿਲੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਇਲ ਸਨ। ਇਸੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ। ਅਜੋਕੇ ਦੌਰ ਓਸਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ 'ਤੇ ਆਧਾਰਿਤ, ਨਜਮ ਹੁਸੈਨ ਸੱਯਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਟਕ " ਤਖ਼ਤ-ਏ-ਲਾਹੌਰ " (1973) ਅਤੇ ਬਲਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੜਕਨਾਮਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਵਲ " ਢਾਹਵਾਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਕਿੰਗਰੇ " ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਕਿੱਸਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ 'ਦੁੱਲੇ ਦੀ ਵਾਰ' ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਹਿੰਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੁੱਲਾ ਭੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਬਗਾਵਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਿਰਤਾਂਤ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਅੱਜਕਲ੍ਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਢਾਡੀ ਵੀ ਘੱਟ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਦੁੱਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੁੰਦਰੀਏ ਗੀਤ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਕਈ ਲੋਕ ਗੀਤ ਓਸਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। " ਮੇਰੇ ਹੇਠ ਬੱਕੀ ਲਾਖੀ, ਜਿਹੜੀ ਟੁਰਦੀ ਸੁੰਬ ਟਕੋਰ। ਮੈਂ ਪੁੱਤ ਹਾਂ ਬੱਗੇ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਦਾ, ਮੇਰੀ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ ਵਰਗੀ ਤੋਰ। ਜੰਮਣਾ ਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਵਣਾ, ਉੱਡਣਾ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭੌਰ। " 📸 An edition of Punjab qissa Dulla Bhatti (1547 – 1599) by Kishan Singh Arif (1836 – 1904) Dulla Bhatti, a renowned figure in Punjabi folklore from the 16th century, is known for rescuing girls from forced marriages and oppression. Got myself to IHC to catch a flavour of Lohri ..and listen to Madan Gopal Singh ji. A beautifully laid out evening. And, music. As the evening was warming up though ..I had begun to get restless. The fog seemed to be coming down real heavy (we weren’t feeling cold coz of bonfires etc) ..and I was concerned - was going to be a lone ride back home, what if I dont get a cab??? Late night strand ho gayee te? No, please. I left early. Sigh. But glad I caught at least a bit of the evening. Meanwhile, yes ..let’s celebrate Dulla Bhatti. Also known as ‘Robinhood of Punjab’ ..Dulla Bhatti was a rebel. An inquilaabi. He fought for the poor farmers who were troubled by heavy taxes levied by the Mughals. And, he died fighting for them. Dulla Bhatti was also reputed as saviour of girls. Folklore has it of how he saved a young Mundri from an evil zamindar ..and married her off. So, yes .. ‘Sundar Mundriye, ho! Tera kon vichara, ho? Dulla Bhatti wala, ho! Dulle dhee viahi, ho! Ser shakkar paai, ho! Kudi da laal pataka, ho! Kudi da saalu paata, ho! Saalu kon samete, ho? Chache choori kutti, ho! 13 January - Lohri Festival It is celebrated with full enthusiasm in northern India, mainly Punjab, and Haryana. Lohri festival is celebrated on 13 or 14 January by lighting up a bonfire and dancing around it with friends and relatives. ਲੋਹੜੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਪੋਹ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਘ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਰਾਂਦ ਦੀ ਪੂਰਵ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਮੱਤ-ਭੇਦ ਹਨ। ਭਾਈ ਕਾਨ੍ਹ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਭਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤਿਲ-ਰੋੜੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ‘ਤਿਲੋੜੀ’ ਬਣਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਰੂਪਾਂਤਰ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਨਵਰਤਨ ਕਪੂਰ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਲੋਹੜੀ ਸਬਦ ਦਾ ਨਿਕਾਸ ‘ਲੋਹਡੀ' ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੂੰਗਫਲੀ, ਤਿਲ, ਮੱਕੀ ਆਦਿ ਦਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੰਨਣ ਲਈ ਲੋਹਡੀ (ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਕੜਾਹੀ), ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਾ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਪਿਆ। ਇਸ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਲੋਹੀ ਵੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ-ਅਰਥ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਕੜਾਹੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਮ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਚਲਿਤ ਸਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਲੜੀਆਂ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਂਵਾਂ ਬੇਹ-ਮਾਤਾ ਕਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਮੋਹ ਮਾਈ ਨਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਦੀ ਅਗਲੀ ਸਵੇਰ ਮਾਘੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਸੀ। ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਵੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦਿਨ ਕੰਨਿਆਵਾਂ ਨਵ- ਜਨਮੇਂ ਬਾਲ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਦਾਨ ਮੰਗਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਵਾਂ ਬੇਹ-ਮਾਤਾ (ਬੱਚੇ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੇਵੀ) ਦੀ ਮਨੌਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਦੇਵੀ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਹੜੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਰਾਤ ਅਗਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿਲ ਆਦਿ ਭੇਟ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। Lohri is a popular festival of Punjab, which is celebrated on the last day of " Poh " month and the eve of the beginning of month of " Magh ". There are many differences of opinion among scholars about the name of this festival. According to Bhai Kanh Singh Nabha, the original word for Lohri was " Til-Rodi ", from which " Tilodi " was formed and later this word changed to Lohri. According to Navratan Kapoor, the word Lohri is derived from the word " Lohdi ". Lohdi was a small iron pan used for roasting groundnuts, sesame seeds, maize etc. Another name of this festival is " Lohi ", which also means iron pot. Two other names were also in vogue, Moh Mai and Beh-mata. The festival called " Moh Mai " is associated with Maghi day, the morning after Lohri. In ancient times, on this day, girls used to ask for alms from the father of the new-born child and mothers used to offer offerings to the goddess called Beh-Mata. Beh Mata was worshiped as the goddess who kept track of child births.
