Thank you to Nationalist Newspaper for featuring us recently and to John D Kelly for the lovely photos. It’s been just over a year since the toy library and repair café have taken up residence at Zero Waste Market Place, working together at the shop’s headquarter on Anglesea St, behind the Denis Lacey Hall. The move to this premises has created a hub for activities working towards a circular economy and sustainable living. It's a small space, but every month, it is buzzing with enthusiastic volunteers helping many people, repairing all kinds of things and offering practical tips, as well as sharing skills. Every last Saturday of the month, we provide a number of services for the community to promote the Circular Economy, a new term which defines retaining resources in use for as long as possible to delay them ending up in landfills. Looking to the future, we have set up a Climate Action Group, with the aim to further promote the circular economy; our ultimate aim is to set up a circular economy hub, with meeting and workshop spaces, a café and enterprises with a circular economy ethos and which would include a wide range of community participation. The group is looking for a larger premise in the town to house our current and future activities and expand our range of activities to include training and meet-up groups. We had lots of successful repairs at the last Repair Café including lamps, a change bag and jeans. The Toy Library was also busy and with so many new toy donations we have had to move some of the toys outside under a gazebo. We really need a bigger space if anybody wants to provide us with one! We took a field trip to the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun recently. It is Ireland's National Centre for the Circular Economy. We're thrilled to announce we've had our Inclusive Marketing award refreshed again this year! At its most basic it means, we don't have a Girls' or a Boys' collection (of course we don't!) But more than that it means: * We go out of our way to feature the full rainbow of children on our website and social media - different ethnicities, different abilities, different family structures. * We actively avoid gender stereotypes in the kids we show using our toys. * We don't stock toys that feature humans unless those humans are diverse. In 2020 we discontinued an entire line because we woke-up to the fact the humans in the games, while gender-balanced, were all pale-skinned Europeans (and the toy maker declined our offer to help them fix that). Diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) is not why we exist (our eco mission is why we exist!) But we think DEI is just a core responsibility of being a toystore. It's so important that our children recognise both themselves - and people very different to them - in the world, especially in a toystore. In Ireland bananas and apples are two of the most commonly wasted fruits. 🍌Banana stems release high amounts of ethylene gas which accelerates the browning process. In order to slow this down you can simply wrap up the tops. Banana skins often have ripening agent on them, so you can take it a step further and rinse off the ripening agent from the skins, dry them, wrap up the stems and store them in the fridge to make them last even longer. 🍎 Apples also release the same gas and if stored near many other types of fruit and vegetables they will make them go off quicker. If I do find myself with overripe bananas, I freeze them until I'm ready to cook with them. Banana pancakes are a firm favourite in our house. We blend 2 ripe bananas, 3 eggs, 1 tsp baking powder and a good handful of porridge oats to make our pancakes. You can also add natural yoghurt for extra protein and gut health points. If apples go soft and wrinkled, I bake them. It was great to see so many toy library members coming to pick out their 'new' toys on Saturday. We welcomed more new members, including another grandmother who is delighted to have different toys for her grandchildren to play with when they call to visit. The repairers were busy as usual. Among the items repaired were jeans, a plate, lamps and a coat stand. This is the reusable advent calendar I made last year for my daughter. For hygiene reasons and to protect the lovely goodies from @thesourcegreystones, I quickly hand sewned 24 little bags made of an old T shirt and strings collected over the years. I always keep ribbons, strings used as handles on paper bags and strings from tops (that are used to hang the tops on hangers without leaving marks on the garments). Today is World Entrepreneurs’ Day! Fun Fact..the word ‘entrepreneur’ was coined by Kerry born William Cantillon in the 1720s.😊 I’m an accidental entrepreneur. Driven by passion and a desire to protect the Earth for my three children and have been totally winging it for the past 4 and a bit years! For anyone new here, I'm Caroline, the face behind Ode to Earth. I live in Killarney, Co.Kerry with my Tipp husband, Dan and our three kids. The Ode to Earth HQ began in our home and I began working with a warehouse team last December which freed up some much needed space in our house! I was a primary school teacher for years, teaching in Cork mostly, before feeling compelled to do something to help improve the planet for my children and make sustainable products more readily available in my local area and beyond.
