PROUD that our clothes are made slowly, consciously, with care in England and dare I say it, happy to shout out that our clothes cost. We don’t badger for discounts, we don’t cut corners, and if the makers need a day or two more that’s absolutely fine. As anyone who sews knows, cutting, stitching and steaming a dress, even by a skilled maker takes time. Clothes are made by people and as yet, in my long career, I’ve never seen a robot sitting at a sewing machine. So in the week that remembers Rana Plaza, where 1134 workers were killed for the fast and furious fashion industry, I’m reminded that there’s still a need for seismic shift in the way we consume clothes; when supermarkets rack up dresses for £25 that can’t possibly pay for the skills put in, let alone the fabric, and create an illusion that clothes are as disposable as a bumper pack of nappies. I appreciate not everyone has a budget for boutique prices but as my Mum so often reminds me, no one used to expect to buy so regularly either. I know I’m preaching to the converted, so thank you for taking the time to value your clothes and the precious people behind them. Remembering Rana Plaza, 11 years on. On 24th April 2013, the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh killed 1138 people. A day before the collapse large cracks were discovered in the Rana Plaza building. Even though the shops and the bank on the lower floors were evacuated, garment workers were ordered to return to work the following day and forced to enter under the threat of losing their wages. 11 years since the Rana Plaza factory collapse, the people who make our clothes still work in dangerous conditions for poverty wages.
