Across a range of physical and digital media, murals, paintings, performance, installations and collage, @EllenRutt uses an abstract lexicon of color and form to study intangible ideas like boundaries and expansion. Rutt’s exhibition 𝘽𝙤𝙩𝙝/𝘼𝙣𝙙 focused on their “Place Paintings” series—a term they have coined for their body of environmentally-focused action paintings. On September 2nd, 2022, Louis Buhl and @LibraryStreetCollective are hosting 𝙄𝙩 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙖 𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚, a one-night-only benefit exhibition featuring over 70 artists to raise funds for a public skatepark on the grounds of @theShepherdDetroit in Detroit’s East Village, designed by @TonyHawk and artist @McArthurBinion and built by@NewLineSkateparks. The project is in partnership with @JeffersonEastInc, a non-profit organization that serves low-income populations on Detroit’s east side. ⠀ ⠀ Included in the exhibition is @EllenRutt's "The Wait of Everything Still Unfinished." Rutt’s work surrenders to the possibilities and limitations of place in a tender call and response between control and improvisation. I skipped work today and took some lovely folks from San Francisco up to the Cranbrook Art Museum. We kinda lucked out with the weather, so we spent some time walking around the academy grounds. And then the museum had some exhibits featuring a few pieces by Kehinde Wiley, Nick Cave, and Ellen Rutt. So cool. From there, we popped down to Birmingham for lunch, then back home. Mary Rousseaux of Detroit Art Press (DAP) worked closely with the design team and Olympia Development of Michigan (ODM) on the Eddystone residential project. DAP provided a wide portfolio of Detroit artists to choose from that fit the project design goals and budget. The range of artist and styles that were implemented throughout the property is striking and unique - not something you see on most multi-family properties. As part of the project, two commissioned paintings were completed and throughout the entire process Detroit Art Press kept the owner and team informed of the design work. Following Rutt wherever she goes, the canvases trace elements from the surrounding environments through a cathartic process of pushing, pulling, rubbing, dragging and spilling. Involving natural components such as sand and dirt along with paint, the method is akin to performance, where Rutt’s actions and movements, driven by her disposition, guide the resulting imagery. If you walk around Downtown Detroit enough, you probably recognize Rutt’s work at Lululemon, inside @thebeltdetroit , at @playdetroit etc. So, I was quite excited to see her solo exhibition. She did NOT disappoint; BLOWN AWAY! From the gallery’s website description of the show (in part): “Across a range of physical and digital media, murals, paintings, performance, installations and collage, Rutt uses an abstract lexicon of color and form to study intangible ideas like boundaries and expansion. Both/And will focus on their “Place Paintings” series—a term they have coined for their body of environmentally-focused action paintings. Ellen Rutt's solo exhibition, 𝘽𝙤𝙩𝙝/𝘼𝙣𝙙, opens next Friday, November 19th! We will be holding an opening reception from 6-8 pm. ⠀ ⠀⠀ Over the past several years, Rutt has been working towards utilizing materials that are plastic-free, renewable, biodegradable, or otherwise non-toxic. For the body of work featured in 𝘽𝙤𝙩𝙝/𝘼𝙣𝙙, they primarily used milk paint, a non-toxic, eco-friendly combination of milk and casein as the binder. While sustainable efforts are at the forefront of Rutt’s practice, the artist also admits to, in certain instances, using leftover acrylic paint lying around her house from past projects. This exercise may sound contradictory (because it is), however, it’s precisely the duplicit narrative the action presents that Rutt aims to explore through her work. The new @hermes store in Troy, Michigan, displays the expected silk scarves, leather handbags, and fancy jewelry but it also has a strong focus on fine art. The store will feature a rotating stable of Detroit-based artists. Multidisciplinary artist @ellenrutt created a mural titled “Chain of Events” which is described as a visual adventure exploring the brand’s 2021 theme called the Faubourg Odyssey. The mural displays the brand’s iconography while taking the viewer through a compelling story of the brand’s history outlined by forms and colors. It has been quite a while since I have posted about my home because there haven’t been that many changes around here. After some intense delays getting furniture and finally figuring out the best places for some art, we are finally content with our nursery. This lucky kid has the best art collection in the whole house! My husband and I bought this large @ellenrutt painting as a wedding gift to each other when we got married 2 years ago. We live in an old, tiny house in Ann Arbor so this is actually the only wall in our home that it fits on! It ended up being the perfect inspiration for a colorful space for our little one.
