Happy Foodie Friday, friends! 😋 ☕️ Espresso on ice 🧊 🥗 Pear gorgonzola prosciutto walnut arugula salad with a balsamic dressing 🍐 🌶️ Dolma - traditional Mediterranean dish of stuffed grape leaves with rice, meat and vegetables, served with yogurt and dried pepper. 🫑 I’m taking it back to one of many delicious and healthy lunches of my European Balkans trip (which I have finally been back to blogging about…3 years later, classic) 😆 The full write up about this AMAZING holiday destination, Lake Ohrid, is on my website! & later at sunset I had a simple but gourmet sandwich: prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, arugula/rocket, pesto on fluffy sesame bread. If you’ve been following my sandwich saga…you know how much I miss a good sandwich ever since living in Ndola, Zambia where it’s just not really a thing other than a basic ham, cheese and tomato on plain bread. 🥱 And it was a nightmare during pregnancy to never get to fulfill my cravings, except for when traveling internationally! ☝️Hot tip for Ndola, Zambia: I have found 1 gourmet sandwich — halloumi and sun dried tomato on chibata bread at mint cafe ndola that is a decent option when looking to fulfill that need! What’s on your plate today or what are you wishing for? 😋😋

Comme partout à San Diego, on s’y sent bien 😊 🇬🇧 Visit to the Old Town historic park in San Diego, my favorite city 🩵 Here we strongly feel the more traditional side with the Mexican influence. In this park, there are many restaurants, bars and shops, it’s colorful and lively. Happy Travel Tuesday! Let’s continue where we left off last week in Plovdiv, Bulgaria 🇧🇬 to… 📍Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia 🇲🇰 I am so happy that I stumbled upon this beautiful UNESCO destination while traveling between Greece and Albania on the very, very scenic route…in pandemic 2021 traveling, nothing went as planned. It all went better, somehow 🥹✨ The ancient city on Lake Ohrid, a place where families love to go on holiday. This place refreshed me like nothing else that I can explain! 🌊 🏰 ☀️ I have all the details in my blog post (link in profile) but here are a few ideas to save for when you go! • endless activities on the lake: swimming, boating, stand up paddle boarding, cliff jumping, sun bathing • bicycle and walk around the lake on the board walks • hike up to see the Saint John church, Samuel’s fortress, Roman stadium, forest and panoramic views • get lost in the neighborhoods of one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, and try to stay at Valentin family home or somewhere with a local experience and perspective • eat Macedonian food at the local taverns with the view • watch the sunset over the deepest lake in the Balkans, known as the oldest lake in Europe, a natural phenomenon P.S. I went to Sofia and Skopje, before arriving in Ohrid, 2 large capital cities that I chose to not write about in my travel guide blog posts so we’re skipping on ahead! But feel free to ask me all about them and also check my highlights where I saved info on both cities 🫶 Had you ever heard of this interesting lake and vacation destination before?

We closed out our trip with the most magnificent sunset on the beach in Majori, Latvia. I love a long sandy beach and this one did not disappoint. Majori has a really lovely main street (feels like something Walt Disney would appreciate) with a stunning church marking the turn towards the beach (👉 last slide) and an abundance of.....hot chocolate vending machines! 🤷‍♀️ We caved and tried some (lots of flavour choices) and it was the perfect drink as we made our way to watch the sunset. And as cheesy as this definitely sounds, I could only feel so grateful to be there on that exact beach, in that exact moment, watching the sun go down. I had wanted to come to the Baltics for a long time and it did not disappoint. I felt like all my senses were very much awake and alive! The architecture, the history, the food, the snow!, the kindness of strangers when it was so evident we were tourists! Instead of ticking Finland, Estonia and Latvia off my list, I'm already wondering when we can come back and see more! You must go! It will fill your travel bucket. Where is a place you've always wanted to visit, and instead of being satisfied, you want more of it?

On adore l’atmosphère et le bonheur qui se dégage de cet endroit 😊 🇬🇧 First morning to discover this favorite city of travel in the USA. After breakfast by the beach, we go to Belmont Parc. We take the opportunity to walk along the incredible beaches from Pacific Beach to Mission Beach. These are the first beautiful days of May, people are happy, the sea is cool, we are discovering beach games that we did not know about. Today’s cool breeze, finally at ease. 🫶✨ After an equatorial summer that was filled with drought and unbearable heat daily, hardly any rain to cool us down. Today, we finally put on coats. For the first time since I was in the USA in October, I felt cold. I tried to leave the house in sandals without a jacket and the cold breeze hit my nose and toes, reminding me that it’s a new season. For us, it’s a version of autumn. The cold and dry season. Temperature and sunlight only slightly change, but we feel the humidity shift. Who knows when it will rain again? A new season physically, here to remind us that life’s different seasons come with changes, challenges, ups and downs. I pulled out the next set of clothing for both of our daughters. Ariella into the 18-24 months and Anastasia into much bigger clothes than her age suggests…pulling out 6-9 months clothing for our sweet 3.5 month old feels a little unraveling, but I’m so grateful for her growth and health! Ariella is all packed up to go over to her Grammy’s for her second official sleepover because she seems to be all grown up these days, yet she’s still our baby. I’m missing family and friends around the world as they are enjoying spring blooms and warmer temperatures. What’s the new season bringing for you? Ah, Riga! Our final destination on this three-city adventure and it didn't disappoint. The Old Town is charming (of course) but the immediate "new town" is full of art nouveau buildings that are just beautiful. We loved this city! Getting here: From Tallinn to Riga we took a LuxExpress coach. Total price one way for our family of four: 46€. The reclining seats, great leg space with foot rests, and a screen with access to over 200 movies, made this 4.5 hour drive fly by. It was one of the best travel days ever! A day in Riga: In the morning, we took a brilliant Free Walking Tour with Rita where we learned the history of Riga, and oriented ourselves in the Old Town. Rita was super personable, shared fascinating stories, and really engaged our children, who both said this was one of the highlights of our trip. You tip at the end what you think the two hour tour is worth. In the afternoon, we walked through Bastejkalna Park and Esplanade, rode scooters to marvel at the Art Nouveau District, shopped, and caught an English-speaking movie because our hotel was opposite the cinema and why not? Eating Out: Street Fries Kitchen: we loved this spot for fish and chips and pancakes! They have a good range of options on their menu. Lido: a Latvian food canteen with locations across Riga. Everything is in Latvian, so don't be shy about using Google translate. A fun place for authentic local food. Čili Pizza - recently opened, very extensive menu, offering more than its generously sized pizza. Can recommend the mac & cheese and Tex-Mex potatoes. Great value and they recommend you download their discount card for a further 20% off the already generous price! As with Helsinki and Tallinn previously, I could have done with one more day in Riga, not to be ungrateful! There were a couple more museums I would have been interested in and I loved just walking around, taking in the architecture, cobblestone streets and green space. I'm so glad we got to visit, and would recommend it as a destination in and of itself or tacked on to another Baltic city. Is Riga on your list? How do you like to explore new cities?

“Save the planet 🌍 for me “ — Ariella “L❤️VE Y♻️UR M🌎THER” — mama Anastasia wore plants and flowers outfit in the morning, then represented the animal kingdom in the evening. 🐆🌳🌺 What are you doing to celebrate and take better care of the earth? Here are a few of our top things that we love… ✨Limiting plastic as much as possible, almost all glass containers now in our kitchen including baby bottles ✨Using reusable cloth diapers 90% of the time ✨Limiting single use items and avoiding prepackaged items especially when it comes to baby food, milk, etc. ✨Being mindful of our water consumption ✨Limiting all the kid/baby gadgets…avoiding being sucked into consumerist ways of parenting and raising children that seems all consuming and so normalized today ✨Buying about 80% second hand (often new with tags or only worn/used once, especially for baby items, so at least we are not adding to the consumeristic industries) ✨Taking things to a tailor, electrician, welder, etc. to have something fixed rather than just thrown away! ✨Not intentional…but currently cutting off electricity use for 8hrs between 6am-9pm…lol #loadshedding 😜🤣😒 ✨Buying locally, sourcing locally grown food, knowing our farmers, growing our own food on a very small scale These are just some of the ways in which we can be mindful as humans and model gratitude to our children. Just because we doubled the numbers of humans in our family unit, doesn’t mean our footprint on our precious earth has to go up exponentially! Happy earth day!! 🌱 make everyday earth day 😆 we love you planet earth…thank you, and sorry 🙏 let’s look for ways to fix our broken relationship with nature 🫶

Over 2000 castles in Scotland but this one is the first one most people will be introduced to and is easily the most visited. I must say we are a little spoilt already by visiting from England, which has a fair share of well-preserved castles, and for me, the most spectacular thing about the Edinburgh Castle is its perchtop location on the “crag”. The views of the city from here are really unbeatable, the whole thing seemingly tethered to the sky. Save this post for a beautiful 48 hours in Tallinn - and what we want to do next time: 📌 STAY Bob.W Ambassador. We had such a good experience in Helsinki, I booked again for Tallinn. Bob.W gives you 10% off your next booking after being a first time guest, even if you booked through a third party website. Clean, modern, comfortable, free washer/dryer facilities, and free lockers for luggage storage. With a ten minute walk to the Old Town, and a six minute walk from a fabulous shopping centre and supermarket, you will love this apart-hotel. 📌 EAT * Pully Bakery - this mother/daughter bakery was delicious and with the ovens in the room cooking as we ate, it was so cosy and comforting that we ate breakfast there both days. * Kompressor - don't let the bars on the windows and stickers on the door put you off! The decor is lacking but the pancakes are delicious, huge and filling! We tried meat and cheese; cheese, tomato pesto; apple pie fulling with apple sorbet; and hazelnut. The menu is extensive and inexpensive. * Reval Cafe - generous portions of breakfast and brunch at a good price * Vapiano - Italian chain that we know and love - because sometimes when everything is different, it's nice to have a taste of something familiar. Cheaper in Estonia than Luxembourg! 📌 GETTING AROUND Tallinn is super walkable, but transport is easy, convenient and cheap. An hour ticket to use the tram is 2€ and is capped up to 5.50€ for one day. 📌 EXPLORE :: Kiek in de Kök Museum and Battallions :: Master's Yard :: Old Town Square :: Freedom Square :: Katariina Käik medieval street :: Kuhtuotsa Viewing Platform :: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral :: St Nicholas's Church and Museum :: Balti Jaama Turg :: Telliskivi Creative City :: Rüütel & Matilda English Bookshop 📌 FOR NEXT TIME :: Kadrioru Park :: Tallinn Bike Tour :: Iglu Park - sea swim and sauna :: Lennusadam Maritime Museum :: Overnight Bear Watching (outside of Tallinn) Are 48 hour guides helpful to you? What's important and useful to you to know about a place in advance of a 48 hour trip there? Happy weekend!

Four Free Things To Do In Tallinn That We Loved: :: the Kuhtuotsa Viewing Platform - climbing the back streets of the Old Town, up snow-covered stone staircases and crossing the cobblestone streets to reach the platform was as rewarding as the view. We loved seeing the port we'd sailed into, the modern high-rises in the background, and the snowy red rooftops in the foreground. (See slide 2, I love the accents and language). It's a beautiful view and worth the short climb. :: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - its Russian influence makes it stunning inside and out. I loved all the pastel coloured houses surrounding it. Close to the viewing platform. :: Balti Jaama Turg - a covered permanent market just outside the Old Town with food options on the ground floor and an amazing flea market on the top floor. You can buy anything here - lots of pieces from the Soviet era, bric-a-brac, a hat you didn't think you'd need in spring! 😉 They also offer tailoring, manicures and vintage dress rental. It was very fun to browse through the fashions of Estonia in the 60s and 70s! :: Telliskivi Loomelinnak - also known as Telliskivi Creative City. A formerly industrial part of Tallinn, Telliskivi has been rejuvenated into a creative space with restaurants, bars, shops and murals occupying former warehouses. It's quite the juxtaposition to the charm of the Old Town and we really enjoyed it. If we'd had more time, I would love to have seen the Fotografiska Museum based there. We did a ton of walking around the Old Town of Tallinn taking in the churches, architecture and brick work, always trying to take a new street a different way. It was a great place to explore without an agenda, although plenty to do if you want to have a plan. Have you been to Tallinn or is it now on your list? How do you like to explore new cities?

🇺🇸 In the USA, no matter where you are, you can see some seriously crazy cars: extreme luxury vehicles, old beat-up cars still running, vintage cars, and plenty of big (but not too many small) cars. Generally, it feels like there are more colorful cars too! They’re also quite creative with license plates since they can customize them, which is not possible in France : here’s a (small) selection of the ones I’ve been lucky enough to come across. What are the craziest license plates you’ve seen? . . . #cultureshock #americancars #usa #france #plaquedimmatriculation #plaqueamericaines #cars #frenchexpat #expatusa #americanlife #travelusa #usatravelling #expatlife #travelexpat #expattravel #frenchexpatusa #expat #american #expatfamily #explore

I decided to ignore what friends told me and start walking. No one walks here. Except to or from the car/destination. Now I know why. It's not the heat - it's a very tolerable 28° - it's the lack of infrastructure for pedestrians and on Monday, the wind. Dust has made my eyes water within seconds. I admitted defeat embarrassingly quick and got a taxi. I was dropped off at Deera Square, which was previously used for public executions. Yup. Wasn't sure what to expect but a construction site, removing temporary structures from Ramadan festivities, wasn’t it. Strike one. Went to the museum. It's Monday. Strike two. The fort, closed for maintenance. Strike three. Mosque, four. Park, five. I gave up and got a taxi to one of the many shopping malls. Over 10km of walking and I rewarded myself with a massage. I'll try again another day.

I had always wanted to see Tallinn at Christmas for the markets and the snow. I had no idea that the next best time to experience it in the snow would be April! 😬 Bless the locals, who were all less enamoured than I was! 😉 On our first full day in Tallinn, we woke up to said snow that gently fell all day. My husband and I took ourselves out on an early morning date to get our bearings in the Old Town while letting our kids sleep in. This is a new tradition that works well for all of us! The morning was so beautiful, and we found the most delightful bakery with the best cinnamon rolls we had all trip, bringing some home for our sleepers. With kids in tow, we headed back out to explore Tallinn in the snow, per the pictures: :: Old Town Gates :: Kiek in de Kök Museum and Bastion Tunnels for an epic look at Tallinn's underground history :: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and snowball fight :: Walking the Old Town :: Master's Yard, with charming ceramics and woodwork :: Old Town Square :: the Rüütel and Matilda English Bookshop for warmth and a well curated book selection :: Pulla Bakery - the softest rolls with multiple flavours, and the best cinnamon rolls we ate all trip It was cold, charming, colourful and peaceful and a brilliant day of getting to know Old Tallinn. Where is a place you were delighted to explore?

One thing I am really loving in Spain, is the wooden doors. I have always loved rivets, like on airplane wings or the girders or a bridge. But the Spanish take this idea to a whole nother level. . . #expattravel #seeingandalusia #designinspain #historicdesign

I don't think I believed the colour of the water was real when I first saw it. I walked too close to the edge, only to be told to move away. We managed to find a spot to get our feet in, the soft sand tickling the soles of our feet. Crabs ran over the rocks while the sun burnt our scalps, and the water cooled what little skin it could touch. Though only just; it was bath temperature. The following day, we went to a beach club where Lize and I could swim, snorkel, and lay in the sun while Nico went diving. A moray eel and huge fish, hard and soft corals, and we were three happy travellers.

Ugh, IG is making me put Jeddah in squares when it's so much more than squares. The Old city, it was so different to other places I'd seen in Saudi. We drove north from Jazan, over 8.5 hours parallel to the coast though only occasionally spotting the dazzling water. I drove part of the way, getting first hand experience shouting at drivers, playing bizarre games of leap frog with cars that would speed past, only to pull in front and then slow down. I possibly saw more feet in the drivers' window than hands. And don't get me started on unannounced speed bumps when the speed limit was 140km/hr only seconds ago. Anyway, impromptu rant over. These photos of Al Balad, the old city in Jeddah, founded in the 7th century with a very obvious outside influence, served as a gateway to Makkah for Muslims arriving by sea. The peacefulness during the day, probably owing to the extensive restoration project taking place that means the majority of buildings are empty, was in stark contrast to the evening when people poured into the streets. The noise, the lights, the atmosphere, the random conversations with people, I loved it.
