Falkland Palace, Fife. Inspired by the grand châteaux of France, in the 16th century James IV and his son, James V, transformed this favoured retreat of the royal Stuarts – the palace became one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland. One of Falkland’s most famous royal residents – Mary, Queen of Scots – was enchanted with the palace, and took advantage of Falkland’s vast estate to pursue falconry and hunting, while also enjoying a game of tennis in what is now the oldest surviving real (or royal) tennis court in the world. Although it fell into disrepair after 1660, Falkland Palace was saved from ruin in the 19th century by the 3rd Marquess of Bute. The National Trust for Scotland is taking care of the palace today. Did you know? Johnny Cash played a televised concert at Falkland in 1981. Cash learned upon researching his ancestry, that he was of Scottish royal descent. Kilchurn Castle by @orsayoban is located on Loch Awe and set against the backdrop of the mountains of Tyndrum. Kilchurn Castle was built around 1450 by Sir Colin Campbell, first Lord of Glenorchy. The land on which the castle stands had been granted to Colin in 1432 to ensure his loyalty following the sudden death of his elder brother, Gillespic. Colin’s descendants, the Campbells of Glenorchy (later earls of Breadalbane), were the most powerful of the numerous cadets of Clan Campbell. Indeed, there were times when this branch almost rivalled the clan chiefs, the earls of Argyll, for supremacy. Similar to many other castles, Kilchurn was subject to the changing political climate of early modern British politics. It was fortified into modern barracks capable of housing 200 troops by Sir John Campbell during the English Restoration. During the Jacobite rebellions of the early 18th century the castle acted as a government garrison. The Glenorchy-Campbell family continued to own the castle until around 1760. It was abandoned after being permanently damaged by a devastating lightning strike. It then remained largely undisturbed, as it fell apart due to decades of neglect. Today, Kilchurn is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. Hermitage Castle, Scottish Borders near Newcastleton. The mighty stone castle is built on an impressive platform of earth, which may have been part of an earlier castle complex. The earliest records for Hermitage are for the de Soules residence in the 1240s, but this may have been situated to the west, near the chapel ruins. English lord Sir Hugh de Dacre began the present castle around 1360. It was transformed beyond recognition by his successor, William, 1st Earl of Douglas, one of Scotland’s most powerful noblemen. Hermitage was adapted in the 1500s to respond to the threat posed by gunpowder artillery. As we're enjoying a bright if cold Spring, I wanted to show some sunshine pictures of Scotland 🌞. Here from later last Summer images from beautiful @traquairhouse which is now open for it's visitor season. I believe it's one of the two oldest inhabited Castles in Scotland and the family and team have done tremendous work in creating a place for crafts and heritage to survive alongside a history closely bound to the Stuart family story. As part of the wider Stuart family they have had more touch points than many with the family story including the first century of the family exile in Europe. I am very grateful to curator Margaret Fox for our conversation. Above; second picture shows a wonderful avenue to canter down leading from the castle to the famous Bear Gates 🐻 , to be opened when a Stuart returns to the British throne- locked at present. Drumlanrig Castle, in the south of Scotland was one of Bonnie Prince Charlie's hideouts, in 1745. Also, Mary Queen of Scots stayed in the former place in 1563. Around 1700, Drumlanrig was build for William Douglas, the 1st Duke of Queensberry. It's haunted by Lady Anne Douglas, who was beheaded and walks around, holding her head in her arms. Days 279-292 of our world trip 🌍✈️ The UK 🇬🇧 We had so much from road tripping from London to the Jurassic coast, through the Cotswolds, to Edinburgh, and up to the Scottish highlands. Despite the often rainy and very windy weather, it was so beautiful. The UK is full of charming towns, beautiful nature, and so much incredible history. And of course castles, so many castles. We cannot wait to come back to explore more of this country! Drum Castle near Drumoak, Aberdeenshire. The old tower was built in the 13th century and is one of the oldest tower houses in Scotland. Robert the Bruce gave Drum Castle to Clan Irvine in 1323. In 1619 a large wing was added to the tower. The castle was the seat of the chief of Clan Irvine for over 650 years. Clan Irvine gave the castle to the National Trust for Scotland in 1975. Stirling Castle. Stirling Castle was first mentioned around 1110, and many royal dramas unfolded here. Stirling was the preferred residence of most of Scotland’s later medieval monarchs, and most added something to its impressive architecture. Scotland embraced the classical ideas coming from Renaissance Europe during the reign of James IV (1488–1513). He spent much time and money making the castle fit for a European monarch – partly to impress his queen, Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England. James V continued this legacy, as he was just as keen to impress his second French bride, Queen Mary of Guise. Their daughter, Mary Queen of Scots, lived in the Royal Palace as a child and was crowned here in 1543. Later, in 1566, Mary’s own son, the future James VI, was baptised here.
