My great grandmother Vera was so many things. I remember her as old even when she had many years left. We called her ‘Maw-maw’. She was beautiful even as an older woman. I remember her mostly in the garden of the house in Athens (Ohio) my cousins and I all played at when were young and would go visit. She lived there until my great grandfather Carroll ‘Poppy’ past. It was the house my grandmother Carolyn ‘Gram’ grew up in. And a house that was in our family for 5 generations before that. There was an old Sohio gas station next to the house on the property that had a small brick building a one old pump, no longer in use. A mossed over pond that was the towns first swimming pool years and years before that- essentially a man made hole, also long out of use. Just beyond the pond, rail road tracks that still had trains passing through from time to time. Mawmaw was a quilter. A maker. A canner. A cook. A mother. And a fearless and adventurous woman. The house was sold after my great grandfather past. I was told that the family who brought the property tore down the house and pulled out the ol’ gas pump but built a new house around the old brick gas station, that it was a center piece of the kitchen. I’m sure Maw-maw Vera would have loved that. Last year my Aunt Bonnie, my father’s sister, and one of Mawmaw’s grand daughters, brought me her old quilting loom (an absolutely stunning turn of the century piece- I’ll post pics of soon) and a box of fabric scraps she collected and some pieces she wore. I made this piece called, ‘In the name of Vera’ ❤️ Some are her fabrics, but also my father’s baby shoes and Boy Scout patches and my great grandfather’s belt, made by my father. She saved and cherished these things, she loved being a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother. That’s who she was. Lots of love to all the mothers, grand mothers, great grand mothers and the great +++s out there. I couldn’t find a picture of the house in my stash at home but I found this one of Maw-maw and Poppy on the train.
