Intagram is an important tool for many Artists to generate visibility for their work. The platform is high-maintenance however and like an insatiable child it demands constant feeding with 'content' or it abandons you in search of more frequent treats. This gives the impression that every successful artist is steadily churning out work from some inexhaustable fountain of creativity and inspiration. Not so. The Inspiration and motivation behind the work isn't something that can be turned off and on at will. Whatever the need, the Muse WILL NOT be commanded. Sometimes inspiration flows like a fast river and great results seem to come easily in a rush of self-confident industry. Other times, with all the research and sketchbook preparation in the world, it can be like pulling teeth and the results are often mediocre despite the effort. I've found personally that my best results often come from trusting my intincts and doing whatever feels right in the moment. It's natural to scroll through other Artists' work and, appreciating the results, question one's own creativity and ability. However, if I've learned one thing It's that impactful Imagery and Design comes from a place of self-confidence, self-awareness and self-belief. A successful flow of strong results is more often about what you choose not to pursue. Simply because certain elements and processes work for others doesn't mean it will create authentic results for you. To thine own self be true. There's something in common with a lot of textile artists and that's a propensity for experimentation -trying lots of different techniques and combinations of them to create layers of painted, printed and stitched texture and tone. I'm always inspired by the results and always resolve to turn my hand to this kind of creative process. And yet, I always find myself unavoidably drawn to familiar forms, techniques and textures. My transparent tonal degradé tubules of organza, plush textures created through fringing and my fauxthers. Truth be told, I don't enjoy the physical development of the work for itself but see it as a means to achieving a particular result. When I conceptualise or explore a theme or inspiration, the final expression of that is something I hold in my head rather than in a sketchbook and i visualise it having specific elements and textures. Instead of working through the design and layout in sketchbooks, I work directly on the canvas - occasionally unpicking significant progress when it doesn't achieve the result I'd envisaged. A limited form of creativity perhaps and not as informed as it ought to be by extensive research and development, but I'm fairly confident that my works have a clear and recognisable identity and coherence. I guess it comes partly from my design background - the reality of a fast-paced environment doesn't leave a lot of time for creative experimentation and a successful designer must be able to visualise a result with strong visual impact right from the start. What my pieces perhaps lack in experimentation or atmospheric layers of technique I'd like to think they make up for with immediate graphic impact and identity. Work proceding slowly on "Seen and unseen". Something recognisable is slowly coalescing as the layers are added. Thread portraits are becoming more widespread now so we'll see if this turns out to be a successful technique for portraiture. It's something akin to screen printing where colours and tones have to be separated into levels. This is demanding particular patience as the cutting is super-delicate work, as is the appliqué with the most tiny, delicate stitches. It'll probably need to be all ironed flat at the end to avoid bubbly surface texture (not attractive for a portrait). SO! I've finally decided to get to grips with this idea which has been nestling in the back of my mind for some time now. Portraiture using transparency of fabrics - specifically organza. The skin tones and shading will be built up by strategic layering, hopefully creating a sophisticated and slightly indistinct and shifting result. Application technique using invisible thread. There'll be some degree of fraying but attempting to beautifully turn the edges created a pretty monstrous Frankenstein result so fraying it is. Should be able to hold it all down with a single transparent layer. Self-portrait to start with. Working title: "Seen-Unseen". Narcissist? Back to an earthy vibe today , this time a blend of stone, moss and golden lichen/gorse. A question I've been asking myself lately: Where do you draw the distinction between Art, Design and Artisan? For me, if there's a distinction, it's in the intent. Working as an Artist, the message is the thing. Anything that compromises or limits the optimal impact of that act of communication doesn't belong in Art. As a Designer, the end result is neccessarily - and appropriately - preconditioned by function, cost and market forces. As an Artisan, the satisfaction and return is in both selling - which requires some design ability - and physical investment and skill in the work itself. An Artist has a message to comminicate - a Designer less so, and an Artisan doesn't particularly need one to give value to their work. So what happens when an Artist (who has to eat and pay bills like anyone) incorporates commercial considerations like cost, accessibility and audience appeal into their work? If those elements significantly impact choices along the way and compromise the clarity and honesty of the message, can it still be considered Art? And for those Artists whose principle focus is the creative and physical gratification of their work with no particular message to convey? Is that still Art? Today's 'sketch' follows along a similar colour mojo as yesterday's but with a touch of lilac heather. Always instinctually drawn to these natural moorland tones. In the blood I guess. The positive thing about these pieces is that I can make at least a small dent in my fabric stash - more specifically the offcuts and waste created from other works. When I do the plush texture for other pieces, it means stripping out the warp threads. If the warp is synthetic or just black, I generally bin it but if it's an interesting colour I keep it. So there it is. Not a day's work but two hours and probably as random as I get. Super-enjoyable, although I was fighting myself all the way to stop myself from tidying it up. I've kept my circular format as it's my comfort-zone ( it grounds me) and I can't avoid selecting harmonious colour shades but all in all, I'm pleased with this result. Spontaneity isn't my thing. My Achilles'-heel as a creative is that I'm often too precise and controlling so I tend to over-finish things. I love unfinished, frayed edges but it's a battle against myself to incorporate it into my work. Having worked in the fashion industry for many years I'm probably too limited by quality concerns so the final result of my pieces tends to be highly controlled -although I try to ensure they maintain a dynamic feel. Today I'm working in a more small-scale 'sketchbook' mode, and although there's some planning behind it I'm trying to embrace some messiness, mistakes, and frayed edges. Much of my work uses a fraying technique but it's anything but spontaneous. Also, as my panels can take months of work each, I'm limiting myself timewise on this one. Whatever I do in a day -that's it. We'll see tomorrow what comes out. Been going through an unproductive period lately. Thought it was just my textile work, but finding it difficult to motivate myself also on my illustration work. It's the downside of creatives -it's not something uou can just switch on and off for convenience and forcing it rarely brings innovative results. That said, it's not a bad idea to use these periods for something that perhaps needs less conceptual and intellectual focus. Beige and naturals are something I've always avoided, partly because its such a predictable trope in Textile Art. "If all else fails, do it in beige."
