From jeans to jacket! 🧵🪡👖♻️🌍 Today, we share and celebrate this amazing denim jacket made by our amazingly creative Fi @fiona.aitch Such a work of love, magnificently stitched, and created from a variety of old discarded jeans gifted by her friends. Fi joined the @aliceandginny family in 2019 and took our foundation program. Since then, she's made many amazing items. We are so proud of her. This jacket is the Stevie jean jacket by @stylearc Fi toiled the jacket first for fit, then began cutting all the panels. The back panel had a mark at the centre, so she came up with the idea to use all the scraps to create an appliqué. Swipe to see how this was created, using small overlapped squares of denim that were joined together by tacking, then stitching with a freemotion embroidery technique. And look at the top stitching! This project is a triumph, and you look amazing Fi! Here's Penny's @seams_sew beautiful finished Peony dress. After a fair few fittings and alterations, the result is stunning, and look at that print! Penny came to class last year as an already accomplished and proficient dressmaker. She wanted to use her dressmaking scraps for a quilt, which we supported her with. This term, she needed a bit of advice and support with this Peony dress as it needed a lot of fit adjustments. Penny has written about her process on her page. Naturally dyed fabric scraps on vintage linens. I really enjoy the simplicity of hand stitching fabrics using this traditional needle-turned appliqué technique. I especially like it combined with quilting and embroidery and prefer the wonderful raised effect that you can't achieve with bondaweb style applique. On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of taking my 'Colours from Nature' talk to a joyous group of over 30 women at a local WI. They made me feel so very welcome and helped me iron out the technical issues of the correct cables for the PowerPoint 😊. Introducing new people to the exciting world of natural colour as an alternative to synthetics is a joy and a personal mission. My aim is always to give an overview, a bit of history, share new contemporary uses, and, above all, offer accessible ways to get started. It was a delight to speak to such an engaged interactive group who asked the most brilliant questions. The first photo shows my display, the second, my studio, earlier that day before I organised everything!! As you can see, natural colours are vibrant and varied. Yesterday I bought this painting whilst looking around 'Flourish', the latest exhibition of work by Creative Response in Farnham. Its part of Surrey's Artists Open Studios which runs throughout June and has a real variety of interesting and vibrant artwork on display...this one just made me feel happy and has lots of interesting collaged items incorporated into the work, including some wool. Lake pigment making is a slow but beautiful process. Also a great way to make use of an exhausted dye bath and savour each drop of pigment. This is Birch bark. Initially 50 grams and it has dyed a few skeins of wool yarn, some silk, and cotton. As the dye exhausts the colours get paler. Birch bark is tannin rich, tannin is useful as a pre-mordant for vegetable fibres. This dye bath was yielding paler and paler colours but look at the lake! Only with 2 litres of dye solution. Somewhere I heard/read that tree barks don't make good lake pigments. Has anybody else heard this? @lucyburleypots is back with the NFAT this year, sharing a studio with @pennyfleet.art Lucy makes ceramics that are both decorative and functional: vases, bowls, jugs and bottles in a wide range of sizes and colours. As well as being useful, the vessels also make attractive sculptural groups when displayed together. Lucy usually works from her tiny garden studio in Farnham, and is delighted to be sharing the Open Studio of her friend, painter and mixed media artist Penny Fleet, in the countryside near Odiham. Their work together is a celebration of colour and the beauty of the natural world. The week turns again, Monday, Moonday is here.🤍 Hope yours is what you need it to be. My today is paperwork and admin day...and I have heaps of it! Before I get my head down, I wanted to share my recently planted garden flax, which is looking very happy. This year I am growing flax for the @Lets_Grow_Flax communual flax project that I'm supporting my good friend @beekaymakes with. It's a great community, where we are supporting our members with growing, tending, and processing advice through a series of zoom sessions and workshops. Eventually, fingers & toes crossed, the collaborated flax will be spun, woven & made into something. This stage 2 is dependent on funding. At the moment, the project is self-funded, volunteer based, and has a membership fee for full participation. We have added a special extra online event this Friday 19th May at 6pm for our members, but extend this to anyone who would like to attend and support the project. We welcome our good friend and talented bast fibre magician Allan @hedgerow.couture who will be in conversation with Bee. We are looking forward to hearing his Flax stories, how flax compares to his use of nettles, & hemp, and about his recent visit to Fibreshed in California. It's £10 to attend. Recordings will be sent out afterwards if you cannot attend in person.
