That's right! The postpartum period brings on a lot of changes hormonally and they happen FAST and they happen that way for a reason. Adjusting to the postpartum period can be difficult and overwhelming. Your body undergoes hormonal changes during pregnancy and childbirth that can impact your physical and mental health. Postpartum hormone changes are the body’s way of helping you adjust to the demands of motherhood. During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone prepare the body for delivery. However, immediately after childbirth, these hormones decrease. This is to help prepare you for breastfeeding and other post-birth caregiving tasks. The first hormone to decrease immediately following childbirth is progesterone. Progesterone helps regulate the menstrual cycle and the decrease helps you to bond with baby but can also cause fears and anxiety. During this time, levels of the “love hormone” oxytocin surge. This helps you feel connected to the baby and urges you to nurture. The next hormone to decrease is estrogen, which helps lactation. Estrogen levels drop after delivery and remain low for several weeks while breastfeeding. The drop also decreases blood flow to the vagina and causes vaginal dryness. During this time, prolactin increases to maintain milk production. Depending on how well you recover is when the hormones start to level out to pre-pregnancy levels. However, sometimes the hormones can create an imbalance and cause some unpleasant symptoms Imbalanced Hormones Postpartum: ⭐ Mood swings ⭐ Anxiety ⭐ Trouble sleeping and constantly checking on baby ⭐Irritability ⭐Difficulty bonding with baby ⭐Excessive crying ⭐Overwhelming fatigue ⭐ Low libido and dry vagina ⭐ Hopelessness ⭐ Lack of desire for everyday tasks ⭐Fear of leaving baby with someone else Hormones can also affect the pelvic floor. I feel like there are getting to be a lot more resources for pregnancy and postpartum women (still not enough) but severely lacking for women older than 55 years old.
