Our Lady Aviator of the Day is @gunmetalmerrill ! “Hi! I’m Alex Merrill and I’m a CFI in Alabama. Aviation runs in the family. My great-grandfather flew blimps in WWI, and my dad was an Army helicopter pilot. At 30 years old my A&P husband and dad said I should give flying a try, and I knew I found the forever career. I did my discovery flight and all my ratings at a flight school owned by another female aviator. At one point 50% of the instructors were women! It made me feel more comfortable and confident to learn from fellow women and to be able to pass my knowledge to the next generation of lady aviators. My advice for ladies who think they’re ‘too old’ to start, it’s not too late. Also, ways keep your mind open to options. Aviation is so diverse, you’ll never know where it can take you. I’m about to go on to my first regional and looking forward to the new challenge! ✈️”

Back from the 2024 Paradise Airsports Nationals! It was my first towing/flatlands competition and I did not score well, but if I wasn’t comparing my performance to other pilots’ I would be pretty happy with the week, so trying to focus on that 😉 I was most worried about comp-level aerotowing after hearing horror stories, but it was actually completely fine. I improved at launching more smoothly from the cart and got a little more over my fear of aerotowing in general. I definitely got my money’s worth on the tow fees—sorry for all the relights (relaunches) @paradiseairsports 😅 and thanks to the launch crew for all their help and patience. Speaking of staying up, I have very little idea how to read clouds or find lift in the flatlands and that showed in my many relights and overall results. Still, I had a personal best flight duration of 4 hours 25 minutes (my @rotor_harness also helped a lot with that 🩵). In every previous comp I’ve made goal at least once so it was disappointing not to achieve that this week, but I came close once with 50 out of 54 km. I also flew 30 km one day with no VG after my VG rope connector thing came untied while on tow; thanks to Derreck for helping me fix that. I’ve still done fewer than 20 XC flights ever, so I was honestly just happy with the basics: choosing good fields and landing safely with no injuries, no damage to my beautiful @willswingmx S3, and no fence jumping on final 😜 People always talk about mindset with hang gliding and it’s a huge thing. It was hard to keep going when I felt like I was flying terribly nearly every day, and I definitely cried in the bathroom once (very cliche I know). @corybarnwell told me to just focus on the thermal I was in, and I tried to do that and will keep trying to do that 😊 Huge thank you to @airborneovercodyhanggliding (and congrats on 1st in sport class!), @socal.swords, @naughty_lawyer, our awesome driver @gaijintaiyaki, and all the organizers, tug pilots, and volunteers who kept us safe and flying during a difficult week for everyone. Ever heard of the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE)? I’ll be honest with you, I completely missed out on this amazing project and I hope you won’t! Founded in 1947 this project aims to promote international relations and friendship, all based on a mutual love to aviation. Member countries will send cadets between the ages of 18-20 years out to other nations, where they can be experience all things aviation but also gain cultural knowledge and build new friendships. A pilots license in any form is not necessary, just a passion for aviation. Some countries’ IACE is run by their respective air forces, the German IACE is a non-military entity and part of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DGLR) @dglrev If you’re interested, check out @iace_germany and their website and apply to become an Air Cadet yourself! Our WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT and Lady Aviator of the Day is @denisiamargarita ! ⭐️ “Hi everyone, my name is Denise and I am a captain at Alaska Airlines. I am a late career changer; I started flight lessons at the age of 35. Twice a week I would leave the office at 5:30, run down to the closest airfield (Boeing Field in Seattle) and do a lesson before dinner! Before I knew it I had my Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi engine and CFI, and soon after, a full load of students. Teaching was hard work but fun and rewarding - helping others along their learning journey was invaluable experience in preparation for airline crew work, which relies on effective communication and collaboration. Once I had 1500 hours I went to OO (SkyBest!) where I was based pretty much everywhere while I looked to accumulate time and upgrade as fast as I could. I was lucky to fly the CRJ and learned so much! From there, to my dream airline, Alaska, the place I hope to retire from. I have enjoyed the diversity of flying that our small airline has to offer, with my favorite routes being in South East Alaska!! In my free time…I love spending time with my family, traveling and ... well flying GA! I have a colorful baby-plane named Marley, and she is kind of an internet celebrity. My advice for anyone considering a career change into aviation is that is never too late to start!! Given the industry’s ups and downs, though, I also think it is very important to have a back up plan in case you need to make it through a downtime and wait for it to bounce back. Which it seems to always do!”

15 years ago today I sat on the jumpseat in the flight deck of a Monarch Airlines A321 as I began my conversion course from the B757 I had been flying for the first couple of years of my career. Just over ten years later, having also flown the A330 and A340-600 and A340-300 for Virgin Atlantic, I flew the A350-1000 for the first time. ❗️I only pursued my current airline when beginning my 121 career. Here’s why I DON’T recommend doing that.❗️ • The market is changing… It’s the ebb and flow of this industry that we see all the time. In simple terms, it’s shifting back to being a recruiters market, instead of the lucrative pilots market we’ve seen the past few years. AND THAT’S OKAY - there is still a job for you. It’s just going to be competitive again - it won’t feel as “guaranteed” as it may have recently. Below are some tips as you pursue your dream job: - apply to cadet programs. I’ve talked about this in a prior post and I cannot stress it enough. Depending on the airline, it will typically give you preferential treatment when it comes to class dates being available. And apply to MULTIPLE cadet programs; some even allow you to participate in others at the same time. - please take your interviews seriously. STUDY. Jepp charts, instrument knowledge, SIDS/STARS; weather, systems, you name it. Practice “tell me about a time” and the STAR method (situation, task, action, result.) - typically people don’t pay an application review or interview prep consulting company until they’re ready for the legacies. If you have something complicated in your background, multiple checkride failures, etc… You may benefit from professional consulting to help you prepare for the hiring process. - keep your applications up to date - update your total time every few weeks. - if you’re beyond cadet program eligibility, make sure you’ve applied to multiple airlines. If you have one dream airline, that’s okay! But don’t hesitate to give yourself more options, especially with training delays and hiring freezes. Keep building experience, working hard, and networking. - still building time and haven’t gotten a call back yet? Try to find additional things to do to beef up that resume. Find a food shelter, animal shelter, you name it; and go volunteer when you can! Questions? Last night in #YYZ was fairly exciting as a low layer of fog covered the southern portion of the airport. This led to Category II operations being in effect for a short amount of time as the runway visual range dropped well below Category 1 minima. However, runway 05 was screaming VFR and could be seen from a distance. The illuminated runway is 33R which was temporarily being used for departures before runway 05 reopened to traffic. Kudos to the solo air traffic controller on night shift managing the dynamic operations at the Pearson airport. Our course instructors are airline pilots who can practically apply ground school knowledge to real world scenarios. By 1932 Amelia Earhart was the most famous pilot … and perhaps woman in the world. In May of that year she flew solo across the Atlantic, becoming the first woman to do so. Earhart arrived in Erie on November 29 to a crowd of over 500 at the still relatively new Erie airfield. She was welcomed by Mayor James P. Rossiter, Business and Professional Women’s Club president Priscilla Reichert, Hammermill’s Mary and Ernst Behrend, and Dudley Roth of Roth Cadillac. Earhart appeared at a speaking engagement at Strong Vincent High School taking questions and praising the US for its innovation in flying. She spent the night at the Behrend’s Glenhill Farmhouse and departed Erie on December 1. 👩🏻✈️This is reminder for me to keep going, I got my Private Pilot license since November , 2019. I can recall a few times when I was ready to quit and do something else same career most of my friends and family does. But I follow my heart and my dreams to stick with my goal flying for the airlines and never thought that would be a Boeing 757 767 . No one said it was easy but it’s worth it.
