Milepost 171 with a Major Past Reminisce. As the first passenger train in India ran on this day between Bori Bunder to Thane back in 1853, its an occasion to reminisce this little yet a major relic from the past. Not long after the running of the first passenger train on the Indian soil, the first train in the Eastern India ran between Howrah to Hooghly on 15th August 1854. The development of railways in this part of India was detrimental to the EIC, as Bengal was their stronghold. In lieu of this, private railway lines owned by individuals and privatr companies also came into being, with one of them being the unique 27km long, 4ft gauge line between Nalhati and Azimganj, established in 1863. This line later came to be known as Nalhati-Azimganj Light Railway, and became the earliest light railway in India. To cater the needs of this line, this little 0-4-0 steam locomotive was manufactured by Anjubault in Paris and was brought to India in 1863. This little locomotive hauled trains on this branch line. Following the absorption of the Nalhati-Azimganj line in 1872 by the colonial government, this locomotive functioned on its 4ft gauge line until 1892, when it was acquired by the East India Railway (EIR) in that year and was converted to run on 5ft 6in BG tracks, making it the first and the only documented specimen to be converted from 4ft to 5ft 6in BG. Following this conversion, it was used as a shunter inside the Jamalpur workshop. Another chapter, albeit a darker one, opened up in the life of this locomotive in 1951, when it was purchased by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation and was made to do the menial job of hauling muck specials (garbage trains) until 1962 and was kept for scrapping, just as it neared its centennial year. Fortunately, with some efforts by the Jamalpur Workshop, this little locomotive was saved from the torches and later arrived at the National Rail Museum as one of the first batch of exhibits in 1974. This, along with the Fairy Queen were the oldest exhibits of the museum. After the transfer of Fairy Queen, this little locomotive became the oldest exhibit of NRM. Continued in comments..

Veiled in Vapour. As the title of this post takes its inspiration from the 1996 Documentary and a book by Mr. Vikaas Arya, it also coincides with the theme of this frame. In frame is one of the oldest working steam locomotives on the planet, the EIR 22, lovingly called as the "Fairy Queen". She takes a stroll around the Platform 4 of the Delhi Cantt. Railway Station (DEC/NR) for movement testing and tags along with her consist, two coaches for the steam special that she is meant to haul until Rewari (RE/NWR) that day. As she moves around, she lets loose her locomotive breath in the form of a huge mass of smoke and vapour in the air in such a manner that she is enveiled by her own breath, embracing the mystique of a moving steam locomotive. With her breath, she also gains the euphoria of her onlookers, that are bewitched to see her living, breathing and strolling around. Following up this picture is a part of the intro of the song "Locomotive Breath" by Jethro Tull, the title of which not only colludes with the visual theme of the post, but also adds further to the mystical charm of the Fairy Queen. The Duality of Tractions. Over the course of 170 years, the Indian Railways has seen gazillions of changes in various prospects. This frame tries to fit in some of it side-by-side. In frame is the EIR 22, better known as "Fairy Queen". One of the oldest functional steam locomotives of the world, she was built by Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson, Leeds, England in 1855, just 2 years after the first passenger train ran in India. In 1972 she was declared as a "National Treasure" by the government and was restored to run on the mainline in 1997, following another re-restoration by the Locomotive Workshop, Perambur in 2012. Following this, she has been a part of the holdings of the Heritage Steam Loco Shed, Rewari, where she is currently maintained. In the given frame, the Fairy Queen stands at the Pataudi Road (PTRD/NR) for a watering halt while hauling a steam special. In the meanwhile, she is joined by the WDP-4D 40110, a denizen of the DLS, Tughlakabad (TKD/NR). Clad in a unique livery which is popularly known as the "Coca-Cola" livery, she acts as the backup loco for the day. The HHP power dead tows her shedmate, a WDS-6AD clad in the Indian tricolour scheme and an extra coach in case of any happenings. Standing side-by-side, the peewee steamer and the humongous diesel guzzler give a perspective which tells the story of Indian Railways' 170 years of development and the changes it underwent. For One Last Time. Living in Delhi for almost two years, I have experienced numerous crests and troughs of emotions in many aspects of my life. Even in my life as a railfan, I have experienced various emotions likewise. The reason why I am talking about my emotions is related to these two enframed trains, as they've made me experience various types of emotions like ecstasy and thrill. But today, for the first time, this sight gave me an emotion of sadness, as this frame may never happen again. For the past one year, the Tilak Bridge Railway Station (TKJ/NR) had become my go-to spot to get these two diesel powered trains, that were among the last ones at this part of the capital. Right from their arrivals on the platform to their loud honks while departure, the crew letting loose the throttles of their diesel mongers to churn out raw power and crazy acceleration, these things became a part of my newly-found life as a railfan in Delhi. The trains that I am talking about are the 14085 Tilak Bridge-Sirsa (SSA/NWR) Intercity Express, and the 14728 Tilak Bridge-Sri Ganganagar (SGNR/NWR) Express. In the given frame, the former is led by the WDP-4D 40294 from the DLS, Tughlakabad (DLTB/NR) for one last time, while the latter is powered by the WDM-3A 14027, a shedmate of the EMD. For the past one year, this train has given me a thrill to spot, because I had to make a run from the metro station to the platform just before its departure, only to see the repetitive links for days. Little I knew back then that I will pen down these words for this train to be powered by a diesel locomotive for one last time, as starting from 02/03/2024, this train will be powered by locomotives that get their juice from the OHE clutter. At last, all I can do is to express my gratitude to these two trains for letting me experience various types of emotions, for making me feel lucky about my railfanning and making my life a bit better in this big city. So, keeping my 10 years of running along the tracks simple, yet showcasing that one has to move ahead with the changing times, I post this picture today(a day later than intended due to lack of time). 22896 Puri Howrah Vande Bharat Express crosses the centuries old Mahanadi Rail Bridge at Cuttack as it adheres to a Temporary Speed Restriction of 65kmph. Structures of old times supporting latest generation trainsets. This Bridge was probably built by my maternal great grandfather who moved all the way from Kutch to Cuttack as a railway contractor. It all started from the Album "Hometown RF" on my Facebook. The pictures you see on my insta page is not eveb the tip of an iceberg of what I've clicked over all these years. My earliest pictures of trains are on Facebook. I still remember finishing my last paper of standard 8 on 28th February, 2014. Rushing back home and out again to the Level Crossing at the Northern end of Cuttack Jn. accompanied by @ron_r0cks007 . I used an old Samsung Duos to click pictures. The same day, I got my first smartphone from Bhubaneswar and continued capturing pictures and videos with it. And today, the next picture I click on my DSLR will be its 10000th click! I've definitely come a long way. To a glorious end of an era! 🔥🥂 Diesel locomotives aren’t just tough machines; they evoke emotions among rail fans worldwide. Perhaps it’s the ferocious honking emanating from both ends of the cab/hood, or maybe it’s the rigorous vibrations felt when the locomotive fires all its cylinders at full power. The value of diesel locomotives cannot be replaced by whining electric locomotives. On the same note, today marks the day when another train on the Mysuru - Hubballi - Belagavi stretch, popularly known as the Vishwamanava Express (17326/5), loses its diesel traction after being served by diesel locomotives for around six years. This train has had the privilege of being hauled by the mighty ALCOs and the powerful EMDs. It’ll be hauled by electric locomotives starting tomorrow. An Offbeat. Basking the warmth of the sun on a fine December afternoon, in frame is the WDP-1 15032, one of last survivors of its kind which is mostly intact, resting at her home at the Diesel Loco Shed Tughlakabad (TKD/NR), with her markers taken off. The first of the WDP series, the WDP-1s are basically a scaled down version of the legendary WDM-2 class. Powered by a V12 ALCo 251B prime mover maximum rated at 2300hp, they have a Bo-Bo bogie design, making them the only ALCo type diesels with such a configuration. Unlike the WDM-2, they lack dynamic braking, and the non-rebuilt units like the above enframed ones have their signature "Baldie" short hood, sans any DBR grills. They were manufactured between 1995-1999, with 15032 being dispatched in 1997. A total of 69 units were made, which makes the WDP-1s one of the rarest diesels to find on IR's broad gauge network. They were mostly active in NR and SCR, with both the zones having taken them out of the mainline. A Rarity amongst Rarities. In frame is the WDP-3A 15528, a rarity amongst rarities, as it is the sole specimen amongst all of the last remaining WDP-3As that are currently homed at the DLS, Tughlakabad (TKD/NR) to be clad in this unique silver livery with red and blue stripes. This color scheme, which makes it unique reminisces some of its shedmates, the WDP-4Bs that have been christened after the valiant queens of India. Just like the others of this class, 15528 also bears the name "Pushpak" on its face. Here in the frame, the 15528 can be seen bringing the 14728 Tilak Bridge (TKJ/NR)-Sri Ganganagar (SGNR/NWR) Express on the PF 1 of Tilak Bridge Railway Station to commence as well as power this service on a pleasant evening from the early days of the spring season.
