During our fall landscape project, a few tulip bulbs apparently got pushed down hill and were buried under rocks. I couldn’t have told you that these red beauties were missing from the lineup with their yellow friends. Each hardship they faced went unnoticed by me. They were up against a big challenge to say the least. It’s quite possible they were planted upside down and they definitely did not have 6 inches of cover that they badly needed to survive. AAPi Executive Director Tegan Carrison responded to a story about Lifeline experiencing its busiest day on record last Sunday. The crisis support service received 4371 calls, messages and webchats - its busiest day on record and 20 per cent above average. Lifeline attributed the rise to the recent number of domestic violence crimes and media coverage of it, as well as the cost-of-living crisis. AAPi said the figures painted an accurate yet bleak picture of the mental health crisis impacting Australia. "It is time for the Federal government to invest deeply in the mental health of our country," Ms Carrison said. "Pandemic-era subsidies providing 10 additional psychology sessions per calendar year for people with a mental health treatment plan should be reinstated", she said. This memoir popped up on my radar because it had to do with mental health, and I thought the format sounded like something I would enjoy to explore the subject matter. A mix of prose, poetry, text, essays, in a stream of consciousness, fragmented style to reflect on the authors relationship with a woman diagnosed with suicidal depression. Their relationship is complicated and intimate and makes up the "lifeline" running through this book as the author takes us through the harsh realities of the diagnosis. This book is sad, heartbreaking, moving, and personal. I read in in small chunks because the subject matter is so heavy.
