Con la idea de conseguir que la joven se interesara en él, practicó el tema “Comin’ Home Baby”, del flautista newyorquino Herbie Mann. Happy Monday! Today marks the continuation of a long-awaited series on my YouTube Channel. This is my 6-part series called “My 1st Artist Diploma Flute Recital”! Over the next weeks, I will share a new installment of my most recent recital. . We continue the recital program with one of my favorite piccolo solos. This is Amanda Harberg’s “Hall of Ghosts” for Solo Flute. Amanda Harberg is an American composer famous for luscious excursion in melodies in her pieces. Her composition “Hall of Ghosts” was composed in April 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic and lockdowns. The hall, once filled with performing and rehearsing musicians, became an empty space filled with the old memories and echoes of before the lockdown. Harberg used that ambient aspect surrounding the lonesome piccolo to implore the spirits and ghosts. The opening section is an expressive environment creating immersion with dramatic pits and plaintive, searching piccolo phrases. Underneath the lively second section, there is conflicting dialogue between the accelerating time ticking staccato figures and the piccolo trying to make itself heard amongst the chaos. In a sense, it creates the question: Who wins the conflict: the music or the spirits? That is up to the performer. I shall link the entire video in my bio. The Flute Eras tour was an absolutely beautiful event full of some gorgeous music! Since the recital aligned with prom for many of my students, we decided to go all out and wear our most beautiful outfits! Since this is the last studio recital I’ll be able to hold in Conway it was especially emotional for me. Today marks eight years since I walked my graduation to get my Bachelor’s Degree from New World School of the Arts/University of Florida, around this time ten years ago I did my final jury as a student at MDC Kendall and around this time four years ago I passed my oral defense to finish my Masters with the Pandemic in full swing. Today, I can actually say that I am happy with where I am right now. Some of you may know this but for those who don’t, I have been battling performance anxiety since my sophomore year of high school and impostor syndrome since my senior year of high school. I have my good days and I have my bad days but I won’t let it stop me from playing music. This picture isn’t my best look, but I wanted to share it nonetheless. Last night, I had the absolute pleasure of watching my student Nina perform in her high school orchestra concert! Every semester, her director opens up auditions and picks a few students to perform solos at their concerts, and Nina was selected for this concert!! She performed Gaubert’s Madrigal. This has been such a fun piece to work on with her, exploring French style and phrasing! I’m excited to see where we go next! What do I mean by a “musical fingerprint”? Do you have any repeating motifs that you’ve noticed across all your pieces? Whether it’s the same harmony, exact chords, melodic sequence, or any kind of rhythmic pattern? You’ve got a fingerprint? I’ll tell you mine! But mine is heard in so much music it may not be a fingerprint at all! Mine’s a 4’-3’-1’-5 descending melody! I’ve noticed this in at least four (!!) of my pieces so far.
