If you ever wondered if fishing from a kayak is easy, it's not! 😂 We did a lot more kayaking than fishing and not having live bait with us was a challenge to use only artificial lures. But, it was a lot of fun! In the mangrove coves, we were surrounded on all sides by mullet jumping out of the water. 🐟 If only we could have caught the snook or larger fish chasing them! Not every day do we reel in a big one, but everyday spent on or near the water is a great one! Yesterday, I led an @apalacheeaudubon field trip down the Aucilla River from the @suwannee_river_wmd Cuba Bay Tract to Lamont. This is a wild stretch of river with no houses or real development of any kind for over five river miles. The route passes several groves of mature and, in some cases, virgin bald cypress. I still can’t figure out why these trees weren’t cut, but I’m definitely glad they weren’t. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the Aucilla River is one of the coolest rivers out there. ‘E ala e’ After a crap week of all kinds of wind and swell that wasn’t really even surfable because of the aforementioned wind, this morning was just grand! We had one boat go out today and do the North Palm Beach loop. Our skipper and custodian of Hawaiian culture led us on a call and response version of ‘E ala e,’ a song of the sun rising in the east. Seemed fitting and let’s jut say we paddle better than we sing. We pulled off just a touch over 7 miles in some stellar conditions and Lori brought us all the way in solo from seat 6 ! I’m starting a new weekly series here on Florida Lives all about Florida Bucket List destinations and activities! ☀️ Each Wednesday I’ll share pictures, details, and tips from a Florida bucket list item I’ve crossed off! This can be anything from hand feeding a flamingo to staying at the state’s oldest inn. Today’s Florida Bucket List feature is…Weeki Wachee Springs State Park! This is one of the most unique state parks in the state. Weeki Wachee is known as “the city of mermaids” 🧜♀️ It’s a little slice of Old Florida Tourism - the mermaids have been performing in the spring since 1947. They are completely submerged underwater for the whole show, breathing from oxygen tubes. It’s pretty amazing! The spring and shows are fun, but the real gem of the park in my opinion is the Weeki Wachee River. 💎 The water is crystal clear, and much of the river is undeveloped, meaning you’re surrounded by lush tropical forests. It’s common to spot manatees in the Weeki Wachee River as well. If you launch from the State Park, you’ll be going downstream, which requires literally no effort on this fast-flowing river. Paddling upstream is a little challenging, but definitely doable. There are a couple outside paddling rental companies with shuttle services, but you can also launch your own vessel from Rogers Park for free, paddle upstream, and then float back down. We found it was a little crowded near Rogers Park but the crowds thinned the farther we went. I’d highly recommend paddling this river at least once 💙 Inside the state park, there’s also a water park built into the spring known as Buccaneer Bay. There is a big swimming area, 3 tall waterslides, a natural lazy river, a splash zone, and a dock to jump off of. Other activities include a boat ride on the river, playground, paddling rentals & launch, and gift shops and concessions. Weeki Wachee Springs SP is notoriously hard to get into during the busy summer. Arrive minimum 45 mins-1 hour before park open.
