Passiflora Incarnata is the extraordinary purple cousin of the corkystem passionflower (passiflora suberosa) that Gabrielle wrote about on Monday. This very conspicuous vine attracts many species of ants, butterflies, moths, and other insects, and is the host plant of the Zebra Longwing, Gulf Frittilary, (pictured) and Julia butterflies. These glorious flowers are so complex and outrageously ornate, they look almost alien. Even the buds, with their five spiny points, let you know that something special is inside! The tendrils are red, contrasting with the green foliage and purple flower. This native vine is in bloom throughout the state in spring and summer. The pulpy egg-shaped fruits, yellowish when ripe, are eaten by squirrels and raccoons. Passiflora incarnata has a lovely, light fragrance. You don’t want to passi this flora without stopping to sniff it! Mother Nature’s Playground. Manatees swim beside me this morning and when I look back to see the sun making it’s first appearance over the cabbage palms, one comes up to take a breath. The sound fills the morning scene. It was time for the avian world to greet the day. The amount of diversity in bird sounds is nothing but soothing and reassuring. A dragonfly catches a ride on my kayak while a gator cautiously floats by, watching my every move which will tell him whether he needs to submerge or can remain on the surface. He decides I am not a threat. While the golden hour unfolds in front of my eyes, drenching the palms in the most beautiful golden color, I find that two bald eagles are perched on the same tree as they were at my last visit. This place has become almost like a neighborhood to me - except that the beauty of it intensifies with each trip. But I’m still anxiously awaiting my favorite wild ones: the otters. My gut takes over my paddle and leads me directly to them. The otters are on the river bank, my favorite place to photograph them, with their bodies completely out of the water. They see me, although I feel like waving and smiling at them, telling them how happy I am to run into them, I am forced to remain calm and move very slowly, not making any eye contact and even paddling away so they don’t feel threatened. They believe me, they stand still and my finger pushes the shutter button while I send them my “thank you’s”, silently of course - because that’s the only way I am able to communicate with the wild ones.
