I physically can’t roll my eyes hard enough when I hear people say things like “I don’t want my son to play the flute - that’s a girl instrument” 🙄🙄🙄 ✨ And same goes for the other side of the spectrum. Low brass and percussion aren’t “boy instruments.” It’s 2024, y’all. Get with the program. Flute isn’t “for girls.” ✨ Do you know just how many incredible male flutists there are? Do you know just how much lung strength flute takes? Do you know how incredibly important it is for all musical instruments to maintain diversity? ✨ A while back I heard a parent make the implication that a boy playing the flute “wasn’t right” and I about had a conniption. Excuse my rudeness (and teachers, I don’t recommend snapping at parents), but this is a subject I will get rude over. Instruments don’t have genitalia. Assigning gender rolls to instruments is weird. Don’t make it weird, y’all. Let people do what makes them happy. ✨ So, parents and teachers, as your kids are exploring instruments for band next year, don’t limit them based on gender rolls for instruments that we literally just MADE UP for no reason. I am still in awe of the massive amount of support, kindness, beautiful performances and presentations I have experienced during the Spring Festival last weekend. It was an honor to meet you all and to serve you. To each competitor and performer - huge congratulations! You did it! You practiced, showed up and did your best - each of these performances were extremely moving and I had many tingles going through my spine. Thank you to our brave board members for holding the fort and giving your best in making this event go smoothly. Inspiration is weird. It waxes and wanes. It couples itself with the most random projects sometimes. It’s not even remotely linear. ✨ So how do you get inspired? How do you find flow? Is it working on technical exercises? Pop pieces? Increasingly challenging repertoire? Music theory? Music history? What engages you in the process? ✨ Remember that your answer doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s. That’s the beauty of this whole music-learnin’ thing! You can be inspired by whatever part makes your heart flutter. But sometimes we have to play around and FIND that thing. ✨ So much of lessons with me are about finding what gets you inspired so we can relate it to all the not-so-inspiring stuff. The last presentation slot of the Spring Festival this year belongs to @ensemble.126 🌸 Ensemble 126 brings a journey of flute duos. Composers from Mexico, China, Venezuela, Germany, England, and Russia are highlighted to travel through time and space from the gems of the baroque flute duo to the inspirational works of South America. The instrumentation includes uses of two concert flutes, two baroque flutes (the one-keyed flutes), and piano. This program is intended for all ages, and we hope the San Diego Flute guild community can benefit from hearing some of these classics of the duo repertoire. Join Ensemble 126 at 4:30 PM on Saturday, April 27th at Manzanita Banquet Hall! Ensemble 126 is a versatile chamber music group utilizing the flute in synergetic sound exploration by pursuing diverse repertoire and engaging in dynamic performances. Ensemble 126 aims to invigorate the music performance experience by highlighting living composers and including unconventional repertoire captivating audiences, commissioning new music, and collaborating with other artists. The group consists of seven flutists and often perform in flexible formats while collaborating with other artists. In this performance you will hear Haiyang Wang and Vivianne Asturizaga on flutes and Yunjia Guan on piano.

Y’all, it’s hard to self-regulate. It’s hard to get our emotions and those intrusive thoughts in check. ✨ High achievers (like most musicians) struggle with perfectionism. So, our idea of practice or lessons “not going well” centers around whether or not we played something perfectly. But, the problem with that is that music is messy - music is interpretive - music is a skill we are always improving at. There’s no such thing as perfect, which is (ironically) a concept that most perfectionists can’t wrap their brains around, AND YET, most musicians are high achieving perfectionists. Why? Because we will forever be chasing the carrot. There’s no getting bored when there’s always more room to grow. ✨ That said, in lessons, I don’t look for perfection. I look for progress. This is why the way we work on etudes is a little different in my classroom than in others. Etudes aren’t meant to be perfect. They are meant to be studied, learned from, revisited, learned from some more, and so on. Perfection isn’t the goal. The goal is to improve and to grasp a concept. ✨ So, why IS it so hard to self-regulate those emotions? It’s because most of the time, when we aren’t perfect, our brains literally decide we are in danger, dump a whole bunch of cortisol, and go into fight or flight. ✨ Old world music education has taught us that if we aren’t perfect or if we didn’t practice that we are in trouble, but the new schools of thought are trying to change this! You ARE NOT IN TROUBLE because life threw you a wrench and you didn’t practice. You ARE NOT IN TROUBLE because you prioritized your mental health this week and spent time in the sunshine or with your friends. You are not in danger if you play a wrong note. ✨ Retraining our brains is hard. The neural pathways we have built from mistake to cortisol dump are in there deep. It takes mindful work to teach ourselves that we are going to be okay even in the wake of a mistake. Breathing, journalling, and meditating are all positive steps and helpful steps to rewiring our brains into better thought habits. ✨ Let’s turn your relationship with flute into a positive one.
