A 34-year-old Staff Sergeant assigned to Fort Story, Virginia, died in a PMV-2 mishap 21 April 2024 in Newport News, Virigina, at 0003 local. The Soldier was riding his motorcycle when he lost control and struck a wooden utility pole. The Newport News police and fire departments arrived at the scene and pronounced the Soldier dead. He was wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment, properly licensed and completed the required Motorcycle Safety Foundation training. The unit/safety points of contact are waiting for law enforcement to release its final report. Since FY19, the Army has lost an average of 28 Soldiers a year to PMV-2 mishaps. This mishap was the 16th PMV-2 fatality of FY24 and above the number of fatalities for the same time period last year. I have to brag about our amazing community! Today these folks showed up and did the work-despite the terrible weather cold 🥶 🌬️ Kids and parents pitched in to build 8 new raised garden beds for our cut flower garden area. The new beds we ordered from @plantandplot were amazingly easy to assemble even with our wind chilled hands 🙌 Then we were the lucky recipients of @tidewatercompost giveback program and got a yard of compost delivered to fill these beds up. Their finished compost is soft, silky and nutrient dense which will produce some amazing flowers for us. It’s so nutrient dense you can literally see the steam from the microbes coming off as Cameron unloads it. Using high quality compost like this definitely gives our plants an advantage 👏 This garden wouldn’t be what it is without our amazing community and we are so grateful for you 💕 Stay tuned for more amazing projects on social media or stop by and see for yourself. I ran my 2nd half marathon yesterday, and this is the 2nd race in a row where I completely missed my goal. Miles 1-6 I felt FANTASTIC! Miles 7-8 were okay, then mile 9 I started cramping. I did everything right, made sure I was properly hydrated, didn’t try anything new nutrition wise, but the humidity was 89%, so I guess that affected me. The lighthouse here is the 4th lighthouse ever to be built in the US, and the 1st ordered by President George Washington, so that’s pretty cool! I’ll probably make this an annual race since Nate is stationed in Norfolk (even though he was deployed this time and missed the race). 🌊Over the Shore! 🌊 #whywedoitwednesday This is 1SG Jeremy W. Spiekhout and he is currently serving as the 567th Inland Cargo Transfer Company First Sergeant. 1SG Spiekhout grew up in Crown Point, Indiana and enlisted in the Army in 2004 as an 88K Watercraft Operator. He joined the Army at 17 years old when he was a senior in high school and had to convince his mother to sign the enlistment paperwork. He wanted to join the Army because he knew he didn’t want to attend college or join the family business of heating/air conditioning/plumbing professionals. He attended basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and follow on advanced individual training (AIT) at Fort Eustis, Virgina. He has served in every watercraft Company and Detachment except 331 TC Causeway. During his 20 year career thus far, 1SG Spiekhout has held many different positions to include: Seaman, Leading seaman, Coxswain, Recruiter, First Mate, Detachment Sergeant, Operations Sergeant, Transportation Planner, Transportation Supervisor, and AIT Instructor. He has been in the Army for this long because he loves his job in the unique Army Watercraft field. 1SG Spiekhout will be retiring 1OCT25 and plans to be an Army mariner civilian after retirement. His favorite position he has held was First Mate aboard an LCU while he was assigned to 97th Transportation Detachment from 2014-2017. His favorite part of his current position is taking care of Soldiers. His best advice to any new Soldier would be to be the best you can at every position you’re assigned. No job or task is too small. Stay fit, stretch, and drink water. 1SG Spiekhout is married to Dr. Julie Hamilton and has two daughters, Olivia (3 years old) and Aubrey (8 months old). Today's a'venture took us to not 1, but 2 lighthouses! And actually allowed me a chance to finally get my military ID renewed (.....since it expired about 7months ago 🥴) The older lighthouse (on the left) is now inactive & turned into a museum that can be climbed! Hub & I took the stairs in 2017 on a very rainy, cloudy day. We look forward to going back to climb again on a day more like this....just not today, because, well, Leon. The striped lighthouse on the right is now the beacon used on this part of the VA coast. 🌊Over the Shore! 🌊 Today was a day of mourning for the 11th Trans BN as we bid farewell to one of our own. SGT Corie Spencer James was born on June 14th 1998 in Oklahoma City, OK. He first met his father in 2008 and gained his forever family when his adoption was finalized in 2015. SGT James enlisted in the Army in 2019 after meeting his wife Gloria, who inspired him to join the military. He was assigned to 119th Inland Cargo Transfer Company and participated in a multitude of exercises to include Talisman Sabre 2023 and JLOTS 2022. SGT James was best known for his contagious smile and goofy personality. He is survived by his wife Gloria, father Loren, stepfather Neal, sisters Haley, Juliette, Jillian, brother Austin, and his beloved dog Balto. We will forever miss SGT James and he will always belong in the Bandit family. Helping The Home Front sponsored the first Resiliency Day aboard Fort Story in Virginia Beach last Thursday and Friday. Commanding Officer LTC Hamrick worked with HHF to provide support and highlight resources after a recent service member's suicide on base. SSO, along with many other organizations dedicated to the health and readiness of our nation's warriors, was privileged to be there and discuss potential solutions to the mental health issues facing our service members. Each ministry partner presented what their organization does to serve the military community at the Leadership Dinner Thursday night. Longtime SSO volunteer and @marines CWO5 Steve Workman(@workmansp) shared with the gathered Commanders, First Sergeants, Platoon Leaders, Platoon Sergeants, and their spouses about our resiliency and spiritual fitness program, and how to connect with our team. On Friday retired @usarmy Capt. John Arroyo was the keynote speaker and shared his personal story of his own trauma as a child and as a service member. His story resonated with many soldiers with one who came up to John, emotionally overwhelmed, and said it mirrored his own circumstances. He was thankful for John being there and felt God had answered his prayers for help. The soldiers ran in unit formation and jumped into the chilly Atlantic to finish it off.
