To acknowledge Alcohol Awareness Month, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment program organized a 5K at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center. Over 20 service members and their families participated in the race, which featured an interactive activity where they could wear drunk goggles and ride quadcycles simulating the effects of inebriation while driving to promote awareness and understanding of alcohol misuse. In military culture, alcohol is often used as a coping mechanism for service members facing daily stressors, leading to 1 in 3 service members misusing alcohol alongside 65% of the veteran population. Service members can access ADAPT services through self-referral, medical referral from their Primary Care Manager, or command referral. ADAPT states that over 20% of service members report heavy drinking, defined as consuming 8 or more drinks per week for women and 15 or more for men. This level of alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of suicide. For questions or concerns, individuals can contact ADAPT at 210-292-7560. Last week, the West Virginia Air National Guard hosted key partners to observe its joint training exercise, SENTRY STORM 2024, at Camp Branch in Logan County. The exercise, staged at various locations and in the skies over West Virginia, included an estimated 500 personnel from the state’s Air and Army National Guard, partnering National Guard units from Kentucky, North Carolina, and Michigan, as well as Civil Air Patrol units. The overall goal of the exercise was to train Airmen and Soldiers to interoperate in contested, or even denied, environments. SENTRY STORM 24 focused on the concepts and maneuvers necessary for agile combat employment (referred to as “ACE”) for dispersed operations in contested environments. This entails launching, recovering, and maintaining aircraft from challenging, even unlikely, operating locations rather than traditional main operating bases. #Soldiers assigned to 101st CAB, Wings of Destiny, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), conduct “Fat Cow” fueling operations during Operation Lethal Eagle IV, Bowling Green, Ky. “Fat Cow” refers to the field-expedited refueling process where a CH-47 Chinook Helicopter can provide fuel for other helicopters while operating behind enemy lines. The “Fat Cow” method also allows for Forward Arming and Refueling Points (FARP) in areas where ground resources may not be feasible. A “Fat Cow” is a rapidly employed FARP that is ideally suited for short duration, forward operations. They held an internal competition to see if anyone could outshoot CW2 Morgan, and while they were close, he remained the top shot! Once off the course, SSO KY/TN Area Director and retired Green Beret Richard Davis lead a discussion on what it means have resiliency and to be spiritually fit. He asked the soldiers how they handled life challenges mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. While many handle internal stressors differently, Richard shared that we are inclined to stuff everything down in our spiritual rucksacks and continue our mission. Unfortunately, that doesn't work as all that junk that was suppressed will surface. Richard cited Matthew 11:28 which teaches everyone weary and heavy laden should come to Jesus where we can find rest for our souls. Now those emotional and spiritual rucksacks can be unpacked as we find rest, identity, and true strength in Jesus Christ.
