The Danitrio Ko-Omote Noh-Men Maki-e on Hyotan Fountain Pen features characters that appear in Japanese Noh plays on a backdrop of sleek black urushi. The ko-omote (“young girl”) is typically depicted in the Noh play as an innocent beauty. On this pen she appears on the barrel. The tortoiseshell pattern beneath her represents Kikko (“longevity”). Notice the lovely in-lay of raden applied in the center of the flowers. The hannya (“demon”) was once a human woman who became envious and jealous. These dark feelings turned her into an evil spirit. You can see her on the cap of the pen, leering over the ko-omote. The triangular motif behind the demon represents Uroko (“scales”) which is inspired from the scale of a fish, meaning protection. It caused widespread damage and disruption, forcing many residents, including the staff of the Hikoju Makie team, to flee their homes and workplaces. It is heartening to hear that despite the initial scattering of the Hikoju Makie team, they were able to maintain close contact and support one another through this difficult time. The March 14th gathering must have been an emotionally charged and meaningful reunion for the team. The feeling of “rebirth after the disaster” is a common sentiment in the aftermath of such events. It reflects their capacity to find hope and purpose even in the face of adversity. The expressed determination of the team to “inherit the lacquer art and revive the industry” is admirable. Here are two cool urushi/maki-e pens from @bob_nicolle_urushi in the UK. I’ve wanted to see his work for a while and I’m very impressed. The black and red pen is nanako-nuri with a gradient fade on each end whereas the gold and black pen is kinmushikui-nuri made using barley husks. They are full sized pens with a nice feel and excellent packaging. When Ancient Artwork Meets Modern Technology!!! Maki-e is a Japanese lacquer decoration technique in which pictures, patterns, and letters are drawn with lacquer on the surface of lacquerware, and then metal powder such as gold or silver is sprinkled and fixed on the surface of the lacquerware. The origin of the term maki-e is a compound word of maki meaning “sprinkling” and e meaning “picture” or “design”. The term can also be used to refer to lacquerware made with this decorative technique. The term maki-e first appeared in the Heian period. An Artform that can dates back to the 7th Century. . Being able to apply this artwork on such a small canvas like these 2 Zippo Lighters really takes such skills beyond the ordinary. I’m sure you’ll see a ton of YouTube videos of how this Maki-e Art was created in case you are more curious of how it is done.
