Process of Self-portrait: I started this portrait by spending some time on it in class (an observational drawing course). But the bulk of it was ambitiously drawn on top of my dorm room mini-fridge in a 7-hour period (12 am to 7 am :P) when my urge to draw was strong, and my need to sleep was absent. The last self-portrait I made was maybe Freshman year of high school and was incomparable to this one. One part of being an artist we focused on in class was mileage: the more you do, the more refined your skills become. I hadn’t used charcoal before, and the real estate of the 24” x 18” paper was intimidating, but I was happily surprised when I finished and stepped back to absorb the whole piece. There are always elements of each project I do that I want to “fix,” but I have to remind myself the work is complete, and I can “fix” those elements in future artworks with the mileage I’ve gained. #drawing #charcoaldrawing #drawingmileage #observationaldrawing #artistgrowth

Connect the base of the neck with the inner ankle of the weight-bearing foot, on the same vertical line — this is the trick to drawing standing figures. Use the vertical line from the base of the neck to establish where the ankles are, if the weight isn’t fully on one leg, the ankle with more weight will fall just short of the vertical coming down from the base of the neck. Proportion is worth thinking about at the start of your drawing. I can’t count the number of times I have seen badly proportioned figures and the legs are usually too short. This is an easy fix: plan where the top of the pelvis goes on the full height of the figure, above half way for sure. If you need extra reassurance, use the head measurement as a unit to count down the height of the figure. Start by using simple shapes either rounded or squared, as placeholders, the adjust to fit the proportions of the figure you are looking at. Markers on A1 paper. "Now and Then". Holland Park, view from the "Dutch Garden" with the Belvedere of the Belvedere Restaurant, amongst trees. Drawn on Wednesday 24th April 2024 from 4.05 - 6.17 pm. The sky was overcast for most of the time, but the sun came out as I finished, illuminating this little architectural feature beautifully, although because this is a line drawing it didn't matter about the dullness of the afternoon. Perhaps it even helped. A nostalgic moment for me. So many times have I sat in this place, but never drawn here before. Reading the inscriptions on the benches reminds me of many others who have passed this way. Super sketching in today's session with the Tuesday Little Makers. 👨🏼🎨👩🏻🎨✏️🌟🌟 We used the wooden figures to form different poses and made quick figurative sketches - looking at the sketching style of Alberto Giacometti.
