Another baby from the other day was found in the attic. Being away from mom for 4 days though we won’t be able to try to reunite for at least 48 hours. Baby was cold, severely dehydrated with pale gums and and unset GI Tract. So it will be awhile before he is well enough to even try to go back with mom. We aren’t sure if mom will take him back after that many days away from her (it will be nearly a week at that point). This fox came into care after being orphaned. He’s one of five kits that were orphaned, he is the first to be captured by rescuer and unfortunately it seems like there is only one more that is still alive that we are working on trapping. He has both internal and external parasites that he will need to be treated for before joining other kits his age. Even though we named our organization after foxes we normally take in more raccoons every year than any other animal. This year foxes are at the top for most animals of a species but fox season is slowing down and raccoons will be coming in by the handfuls here soon. Three very skinny and dehydrated baby raccoons came in this morning after mom was seen getting into a fight with another raccoon who entered her den (an attic of someone’s home) and is severely hurt but has not been seen in a couple days. We are hoping we can catch mom so she can be treated for her injuries, in the meantime we will care for her babies and get them healthy. First thing early this morning we got a call about a deceased opossum mom with babies in her pouch. The caller did everything correct. She saw a opossum hit by a car on the side of the road and it was safe for her to pull over and check, their were babies and she wasn’t comfortable pulling them out of the pouch herself. So she brought mom and babies to us and we were able to safely detach the babies from mom’s nipples. 5 babies were able to be saved because of the wonderful woman who took the time out of her day to get help for these little souls. If you are able to safely stop and check an opossum for babies please do, it means the world to these babies who would have otherwise not made it. “Warren” came in this afternoon after being found with a hurt back leg running in the middle of the road. Chances are he was hit by a car although there can be reason why he was hit by a car so we cannot assume it is just his back leg that is injured. He will be monitored closely for any other injuries or illness. He does not seem to have fear of people which is a concern that can be associated with several different illnesses but could also be due to an injury as well. So we are taking extra precautions and watching closely. Poor owl was found by an amazing man who stopped in the night to see what was in the road. When he discovered it was an owl that appeared to be hurt he called us up right away and waited with the owl to make sure no one else would hit it. It took us a little over 20 mins to get there and he waiting outside with the owl the entire time. Getting into animal rescue we have found the kindest souls around. Intake number 2 for 2024, a injured flying squirrel. Many people don’t know but Virginia is home to flying squirrels and not just one species but two, the southern flying squirrel and the northern flying squirrel. This little one is a northern flying squirrel. Most people don’t know they exist because they are nocturnal unlike their cousins the eastern grey squirrel. They are also much smaller than the grey squirrels and glide through the tree tops mostly out of view of humans. We don’t get many of these guys into care but majority of the time it is due to a cat attack, which unfortunately this one is not the exception. his was our first year as a rehab facility in the community. We took in over 200 animals which majority were orphaned however we did take in some injured and sick animals as well. 2023 was a learning experience as becoming a nonprofit is not something we had experience with. Animals we can handle all day and night long, but the paperwork side of it all was a whole different beast! 2023 was amazing and hopefully 2024 we can save even more lives and build a better relationship with more of you in the communities so you know you have a resource close by to help with wildlife in need. Just a few before and after photos of our successful mangy foxes who made full recoveries! The transformation is amazing. Although it can be frustrating and difficult to capture these foxes and takes days if not weeks of dedication of checking the traps and letting go of many opossums who like the free meals, it is worth it to see the dramatic changes the foxes go through. We recently bought 6 new traps to continue to try and rescue and rehab mangy foxes. We have a total of 10 traps of varying sizes we are able to lend out to the public to help in the rescue efforts. These traps were not cheap but the amount of calls for mangy foxes became to great and we had run out of traps to lend out so we decided to purchase more. “Swiper” is doing great! The second day in care they did seem to be doing worse and I was slightly worried but today “Swiper” is looking much better! They definitely came into care with not a day to spare. “Swiper” is a very docile fox compared to our other mangy fox in care and I hope once they meet “Swiper” will become a bit more wild and less afraid of humans. It might also be that “Swiper” knows we are here to help and realizes they are getting better due to the care being provided. Meet “Swiper”! Named because he learned how to avoid the plate on the trap and was able to steal away with food from the trap for days! Thankfully the rescuer was able to outsmart him by tying the chicken to the cage inside so he couldn’t sneak away with it and managed to step on the plate of the trap to trap him in order for him to receive care. He is coming into care to be treated for sores that he has all up and down his back and once he is healed up more he will join our other fox who came into care for mange outside. . . Moved our little one outside after receiving their vaccines. Still growing fur back and gaining weight but all the wounds are healed and the mange is gone. Unfortunately they will not be heading out until spring time. It is too late in the season for them to be able to establish a good safe den for the winter and they are not healthy enough to be able to survive a cold night without the proper den. How is this the same fox who came into care only 2 weeks ago. All the mange is gone, the wounds are closed/scabbed and healing nicely. Once we vaccinate they will be heading to the outdoor enclosure. It won’t be long before this fox heads outside to a more comfortable enclosure. Although keeping them in this cage isn’t ideal it is necessary so we are able to treat the open wounds without the stress of daily captures. Once they are moved to the outdoor enclosure to finish out the healing process they will have hiding places and won’t feel so vulnerable. We are raising money for the medication to treat mange and for a new enclosure for foxes. We have $1600 to go for a new enclosure and mange medication for a single fox costs us $80 per fox. Meet the newest patient, poor little one has a pretty bad case of mange along with some open sores and malnutrition. Caught in perfect time. This little one is very feisty which is always a good sign.
