I get these comments a lot. From the outside it might appear that wildlife rehab work is dreamy - we are surrounded by animals after all! But our hearts break every time we hear of an abandoned infant animal, or another neglected wild animal in need of rescue from a zoo. We want to live in a world where this work isn’t necessary, a world where wild animals are raised by their real mothers. Being consistently exposed to the physical, emotional and psychological trauma of animals is tougher than instagram could ever show. This rescue was one of the worst for me. Eywa needed our team consistently but it was hard to even look at her without getting emotional. Her mother was shot and killed while Eywa was still nursing, and Eywa was taken as a pet - a sort of “trophy”. And not by any local - but by the employee of a nearby conservation organization who hunts regularly on what is supposed to be protected land. Land and wildlife that myself and my team have a deep connection to. This one was too close to home. Eywa’s mother wasn’t even taken for meat… Just left lifeless along the riverbank. We couldn’t extract Eywa’s mother’s body from the river to give her the respect she deserves, but we were able to rescue Eywa with the help of upa.peruoficial and the local police. She is now just over one year old, and is doing amazing despite being raised by humans. It should never have come to this. Eywa should be in the wild right now, learning from her mother every minute of every day. But due a mix of tourism, a lack of regulation and ignorance, that life was ripped from her. Every single person reading this can do more to ensure that wild animals aren’t seen as pets or trophies for tourism. ‼️Never take photos with captive wildlife or buy animal parts at home or when traveling. Do the research to make sure any sanctuaries or rescue centers you visit are not only ethical, but impactful, and release animals when possible. **Note: most rescue centers that abide by these criteria are often like us and don’t actually accept visitors** We can all do a little bit (or a lot) more. Our first warbler of the season is this lovely male yellow-rumped. This bird collided with a window Uptown, but so far he’s alert and recovering. We hope for a quick turnaround for this guy. There are currently 110,300 birds in flight over New York State, and the night is young! These migrants need our help to pass through the city unharmed. Turn out your lights overnight! And keep an eye out for birds who may need help tomorrow. If you see a bird sitting stunned or lying on the sidewalk, it has hit a window and needs your help. Please gently place it in a paper bag and bring it to the clinic. Our phone has been ringing off the hook with calls about potentially injured baby Barred Owls and Great Horned Owls. Both of these species are currently going through the branching and fledging stages of their lives. When learning to fly, they often miss the perch they were aiming for and end up on the ground. High winds, like we have been having frequently, can also blow these youngsters out of their nest trees, as they are not as stable when perched as the adults are. For these cases, our first job is to assess if the baby is healthy or has been injured by their fall. In many cases, a description of the behavior along with a few photos or video of the bird is enough to determine this. If there is ever any doubt, the baby is brought to our hospital for an exam. If healthy upon exam, the baby is then returned to the nest site and placed in a secure location. These babies are old enough to be on the ground, and exploring is part of their natural development so they don't need to go all the way back in the nest. Young owls are excellent climbers, so placing them up on a low branch is often a good option. There, they are high enough to be away from the immediate hazards they would face on the ground and can climb to a more secure and comfortable location. We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers in our Rescue & Transport group who make these health checks and reunites possible. Yesterday, we returned 3 healthy babies to their parents at 3 different nests thanks to over 8 hours of driving time from our volunteers! Well done to volunteers Fran and Lisa for the first successful relocation of a duck family this year! They managed to capture 14 ducklings and their mum who had been born on a roof terrace in Kidbrooke, leaving them completely unable to access water, and relocate them to a nearby lake. Catching fully flighted adult ducks is always a challenge, so it's a real achievement to be able to rescue both mum and her babies safely - Fran and Lisa managed this by herding the family inside, so that mum couldn't fly away. Ducks keep us very busy during the spring and summer, because female mallards love to nest in locations that are less than ideal. Balconies, terraces, ornamental fountains, the roofs of 100ft tower blocks. When their babies hatch, they often have no way of making it to water and are - quite literally - sitting ducks for predators like gulls and crows. On other horrifying occasions, the ducklings have walked off the roofs of extremely tall buildings trying to follow their mum. If they survive the drop, they often end up randomly wandering in busy streets. Hence the urgent need to relocate them to a more appropriate habitat, before they can come to harm. The mother ducks also tend to return to these same nesting spots year after year, no matter how horribly wrong things go for them! 🚨 LIGHTS OUT ALERT FOR SUN 4/28 - TUE 4/30 🚨 We are in another peak of spring migration, with TENS OF MILLIONS of birds expected to migrate through the DC area in the next three days. 🤯 🌙 By turning off outdoor artificial lights at night, or following ROLAN principles (see last slide) if it necessary lighting, YOU can help protect these migrants from the tragic and often fatal fate of colliding with windows that befalls approximately 300 million-1 billion birds annually in the US alone. Furthermore, if you find a bird that has hit a window-- dead or alive-- you can still help. ⭐️ If the bird is alive: - Contact a nearby rehabilitator ASAP. Use AHNow.org to find licensed rehabbers near you anywhere in the US. If you're in DC, call us at 202-882-1000. - If possible, capture the bird with some barrier between them and your bare hands (pillowcase, t-shirt, etc.) and keep them in a warm, dark, quiet place with no food or water until you can get them to a rehabilitator. - Even if the bird seems fine, injuries related to the impact often worsen within 24-48 hours, so they should still be brought to a rehabber. ⭐️ If the bird is dead: - In DC: Email a picture of the dead bird with the location/date/time to [email protected]. - Elsewhere, submit the findings to your local Lights Out group, www.dbird.org, or the window strike project on iNaturalist. This snapping turtle was found on the road with a jaw fracture and head trauma after a suspected vehicle collision and brought to @aeroanimalrescue . Once stable for transport, he was brought to the center for surgical repair. With the warmer weather, many turtles are out and active and they are coming into rehabilitation at an alarming rate. Please drive carefully. It’s hard to miss a 20+ pound slow-moving turtle, but if an accident does occur, please don’t leave an animal like this on the road to die. With the level of head trauma seen in this case, this snapper would very likely have overheated on the asphalt and died over the next 48 hours or so. Luckily, a caring finder stopped and ensured this animal received the help it deserves. The prognosis for a full recovery is still guarded due to the level of head trauma, but we will continue to provide supportive care including fluids, soaks, and tube feeds with the hope that it will resolve fully as the jaw fracture heals. #SnappingTurtle #WildlifeRehab #WildlifeSurgery #Turtles

This week’s featured SkyWatch resident is the Canada Goose! The big, black-necked Canada Goose is a familiar and widespread bird of fields and parks. These geese migrate in the thousands north to Canada to breed and south for the winter each year, filling the sky with long v-formations. However, an increase in lawns and maintained grassy areas has enticed these birds to stay in suburban areas year-round, often causing conflict with their new human neighbors. Canada Geese are fiercely family- and flock-oriented birds, which is often misinterpreted as these birds being aggressive and pests. Most of the Canada Geese you can see around our Swan Pond are flightless after developing a condition known as Angel Wing. When young geese eat nutritionally-depleted foods — like bread or crackers fed to them by humans — while they are still developing, the bones at the end of their wings grow crooked and outward. Thankfully, these geese now have protection and a proper diet with us, but a simple way to protect their wild relatives from this condition is to not feed your neighborhood geese. If a neighbor insists on feeding the geese, encourage them to switch to food that resembles their natural diet like leafy greens and birdseed. Remember, bread is not for birds! bb’s first teefs! 🦷 Eastern gray squirrels intakes have slowed to a trickle (for now), making way for the hundreds of other injured and orphaned animals we’ll care for this season…before more squirrels in late summer. If we thought last weekend was bad, yesterday was Hell. This is the first of 3 gulls that we took in. Jane went and collected him from Rhyl, as Finder was unable to transport, and took him to Anne. Bert is booked in with the Vet for tomorrow morning. He has an old pellet wound under his wing as well as two wounds to either side of his head. There is a £600 reward offered for any information leading to the arrest/prosecution of the person/persons responsible. If you know something and are not coming forward you are in essence agreeing with the senseless and constant cruelty to these birds. As always. Working through some recent images and forgot about this shot of the trapped owlet I helped out last weekend. There were several factors in this situation but one of the biggest reasons I go out on calls like this is to educate the property owners about what is going on with the owl nest. This helps not only the property owners and community but also means we will receive less calls from that area in the future. Fewer calls means fewer animals brought into the hospital that don’t need to be there. A little education goes a long way and helps both the owl family and the people who are hosting the nest. Last week we, alongside our vets, we made the sad decision to euthanise Janet. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated - her appetite dropped and her mobility reduced significantly despite several treatments administered. It was clear that further treatment was not going to be in Janets best interest. Gannets can be tricky birds to rehabilitate and we had not seen one present with the lack of leg use like Janet without significant injury before.
