Sound on for bird song! This fun tool is a broad fork. Here, Lucas is using it to decompact and aerate the beds in Mill Field, our small growing space bordered on two sides by a stream. The stream recently burst its banks and flooded this area (pic 6). We noticed that certain areas stayed waterlogged for a while, suggesting that the soil in these places was compacted and getting very soggy! This is not ideal for vegetable growing as the plants need fluffy, oxygenated soil for a healthy root system. The broad fork gently breaks up the soil, allowing water to drain away and allowing oxygen in, hopefully kick starting the soil life into action to work their magic and decompact the soil further. Growing veg is really all about caring for the soil and all the lovely soil beings that live within it. Pics 4 & 5 show the soil surface before and after broadforking. The scrunchiest most magical rhubarb leaves unfurling. These are a new addition to Mill Field, as we experiment with a few perennial plants. This year we'll let them establish, and then we will be bringing bright pink Somerset rhubarb to markets in 2025! We're working on getting a few more perennials established this year, including two types of Salad leaf- Sorrel and Salad Burnet. It will be interesting to see how farming commercially with perennials will pan out. They will save on sowing and planting out time, but will require careful weeding and the yields will be different to intensely planted beds of annual salads. Across the country, you can hear the collective welcoming sigh as growers and gardeners wake up to the Spring Equinox. Also known as the Vernal Equinox, today is the point in the year when the days are as long as the nights. After what felt like a long, wet winter, it is now officially spring. From here on, the days will be longer than the nights and plants will be quickly putting on growth fuelled by longer hours of sunlight. Around us on the farm, it's not only gently tended crops that are bursting into life but also the wild plants around us. Garlic is abundant and asking to be made into potent pesto, nettles are shooting out sweet tips for tea, and the willow planted on our streamsides are awakening. Couldn't do a post without something that we've grown ourselves, so the last picture is an update on our garlic. Across the farm, we work to organic principles and in our lower growing area, Mill Field, we also implement 'Min Till' methods. This means we use a wheel hoe at most to cultivate the soil. We're still in the process of converting some of our higher fields from pasture to vegetable growing, and these areas are also on a much bigger scale than Mill Field. Working these areas efficiently requires a little more intervention. This week, Lucas has been tinkering with this restored plough to get it rigged up to our Solis tractor. This lovely old piece of kit will have been used by farmers a whole generation before us to farm here, so it's exciting to get it back in action! We'll be using it to prepare the ground for lots and lots and lots of veg, building on all the good work done last year and hopefully increasing our production. More yummy food in bellies! From the Field! Today we lifted our last precious celeriac from our top field. They've overwintered beautifully and are sweet and so flavoursome. It's quite an ordeal to harvest celeriac, but knowing this makes a mouthful of celeriac soup all the more delicious in our opinion. First we loosen them from our rich clay soil with forks. They're lifted and trimmed in the field by hand. The tops and the roots are left on the ground to feed the soil. (Although if you're growing a small amount at home, you can store the tops in the freezer as a celery alternative for flavouring stews.) We wheelbarrow them to our packing shed where they get a good rinse and packed into boxes ready to go! The hard work and preparation continues here in Frome but our team at @greenstreetbath are also working behind the scenes to get the kitchen stocked with all the best quality produce. Dry aged for 50 days and sourced from our wonderful independent farmers, the Cote de Boeuf isn’t to be missed.

Today was a great day! Friends came from near & far to help us with an ‘all hands on deck’ day at the new shop. From signage to light fittings, prints & rejigging - we’re feeling super positive & on track for our sample day next Saturday & official opening the following week. There’s still plenty to be getting on with but we can’t thank everyone enough for lending us a hand, fuelling us, bringing their tool boxes & expertise - we’re really feeling the love!

I had the fish mixed grill and my husband had the rib eye steak, finished off with Apple crumble and Vegan Brownie and a lovely bottle of house white thrown in.
