Dreaming of… DDH Motueka // DDH Motueka @trackbrewingco 🏴 // @twoflintsbrewery 🏴 7% NEIPA // 5.5% Pale ——— Terrifically tasty Track and Two Flints Tuesday. With both breweries releasing these beers at the same time I thought I might as well drink them at the same time to compare. Something I haven’t done for a long long time. They’re not completely identical. Track’s is a little stronger. Two Flints’ has a Kohia Motueka addition (that’s the passionfruit infused hops). But the intent is the same. I’ll start with Track’s since it’s #trackbeertuesday after all. As I expected and hoped for, it’s dominated by that zesty limey goodness Motueka is famed for. There’s some tropical fruit in the background. Smooth and creamy body, though not particularly sweet, it finishes with a drying light piney/peppery hop spice bitterness. Loved this. Two Flints’ effort is… almost identical. Yep, the exact same beautiful flavour profile as I was getting from Track’s. The tropical fruit hit was I think a bit more noticeable, which makes sense on account of that passionfruit-infused Motueka addition. A minuscule difference in body/smoothness is probably the only other thing I could potentially say - Track’s being a little bigger but that could be just because it was stronger. It’s near enough the same in real terms. Lovely that is. Honestly, both these beers are fantastic showcases of the Motueka hop - one of my favourites - I gave them the same rating. There’s so little to choose between the two that I’d simply recommended buying both if they’re still about. EDIT: (work was completed on Monday and our front door is back open as of Tuesday, 4/30) As part of the Streetscape project, the sidewalk in front of our main entrance is torn up and being re-poured today. We are planning to open at noon and have Euchre tonight as usual, so this means we’ll be using our first garage door as our entrance today, which is just west of the corner. We’ll turn the heat up a bit when it gets colder in the evening, but it might be a good idea to pack an extra layer since the door will be open the entire time. The work on the corner also means we’ll only be accessible from the west, so if you’re coming from anywhere else, plan on a few extra minutes for a short detour. Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats On Oats @sirencraftbrew 🏴 x @kingsanddaughters 🇺🇸 8% DIPA ——— Following on from the stout with another of Siren’s 11th anniversary beers, the DIPA. I really enjoyed the first two incarnations of this beer and was happy to see it brought back this time with an “infinite” amount of oats used, and what sounded like an incredible hop combo: Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Motueka, Mandarina Bavaria and Hallertau Blanc. That beautiful hop bill (which Siren are still advertising on their website) isn’t *exactly* what we got. Motueka was substituted for Riwaka and honestly I can’t think of a worse hop they could’ve chosen. Motueka has distinctive lime flavours which would’ve been ideal paired with the lovely flavours we find in this beer: the orange/mandarin notes we got from Mandarina Bavaria, alongside the vinous white wine, grape and gooseberry of Nelson and Hallertau Blanc, and the delicious tropical fruits of Citra. Instead of zesty lime we get Riwaka’s distinctive cremated bacon notes fighting to be recognised amongst all that. Mercifully they don’t do a very good job of it. In fact, I didn’t really notice it in the aroma, but it’s definitely there in the first few sips of the beer. After that it became quite subtle, overshadowed by all the other much nicer hops and flavours mentioned above… meaning my review can remain positive. Of course the body is the main focus of this beer and it is indeed very soft, “fluffy” and smooth, wouldn’t exactly call it thick but I think that’s a good thing in this case, makes this one properly drinkable DIPA. I didn’t notice any booze either.
