Today we share our love for Futura. Leonard Hilton McGurr (born November 17, 1955), known as Futura, and formerly known as Futura 2000 is an American graffiti artist. Futura started to paint illegally on New York City’s subway in the early 1970s, working with other artists such as ALI. From 1974 to 1978, he served in the U.S. Navy and traveled all over the world. In the early 1980s he showed with Patti Astor at the Fun Gallery, along with Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Hambleton and Kenny Scharf. One of the most distinctive features of Futura’s work is his abstract approach to graffiti. While the primary focus, during the 1980s, of the majority of graffiti artists was lettering, Futura pioneered abstract street art, which has since become more popular. Conversely, his aerosol strokes are regarded as different from those of his peers, as they are as thin as the fine lines usually associated with the use of an airbrush. #futura #futura2000 #lennymcgurr #graffiti

R.I.P. #PattiAstor American performer in #NYC underground films of the 1970'S & the #EastVillage art scene of the 1980s, and involved in the early popularizing of hip hop. She co-founded the contemporary art gallery, #FunGallery. Born in Cincinnati her adventurous spirit however took her to #NYC at the age of eighteen (in 1968) to Barnard College. She soon dropped out to take a leadership role in the anti-Vietnam war group SDS ( #StudentsforaDemocraticSociety). In 1975, Astor was in the midst of the storm in New York's legendary #EastVillage, from punk rock at #CBGB's, the new wave at the #MuddClub and independent films with directors such as #JimJarmusch and #EricMitchell. Astor had studied acting at the #LeeStrasberg Institute. Her entry into this genre was #AmosPoe's underground Unmade Beds (1976), a black and white 16mm remake of #Godard's Breathless which she acted in alongside Blondie singer #DebbieHarry and artist #DuncanHannah. She also appeared in such low-budget and low-audience films, perhaps the best remembered of these was #EricMitchell's Underground U.S.A (1980), in which she starred in alongside poet #ReneRicard. Her best known role was as Virginia, the roving reporter, in #CharlesAhearn's legendary hip-hop epic, #WildStyle. Virginia in Wild Style is a blonde bombshell who encounters the rap and graffiti culture uptown, and introduces it to the downtown art world, a role Patti went on to perform in real life. These films are in the permanent collections of #MuseumofModernArt, #WhitneyMuseum, #RockandRollHallofFame.
