R.I.P. #PattiAstor American performer in #NYC underground films of the 1970'S & the #EastVillage art scene of the 1980s, and involved in the early popularizing of hip hop. She co-founded the contemporary art gallery, #FunGallery. Born in Cincinnati her adventurous spirit however took her to #NYC at the age of eighteen (in 1968) to Barnard College. She soon dropped out to take a leadership role in the anti-Vietnam war group SDS ( #StudentsforaDemocraticSociety). In 1975, Astor was in the midst of the storm in New York's legendary #EastVillage, from punk rock at #CBGB's, the new wave at the #MuddClub and independent films with directors such as #JimJarmusch and #EricMitchell. Astor had studied acting at the #LeeStrasberg Institute. Her entry into this genre was #AmosPoe's underground Unmade Beds (1976), a black and white 16mm remake of #Godard's Breathless which she acted in alongside Blondie singer #DebbieHarry and artist #DuncanHannah. She also appeared in such low-budget and low-audience films, perhaps the best remembered of these was #EricMitchell's Underground U.S.A (1980), in which she starred in alongside poet #ReneRicard. Her best known role was as Virginia, the roving reporter, in #CharlesAhearn's legendary hip-hop epic, #WildStyle. Virginia in Wild Style is a blonde bombshell who encounters the rap and graffiti culture uptown, and introduces it to the downtown art world, a role Patti went on to perform in real life. These films are in the permanent collections of #MuseumofModernArt, #WhitneyMuseum, #RockandRollHallofFame. Astor went on to co-found the #FunGallery in 1981 This tenement storefront gallery, was the first of the 1980s East Village galleries, and specialized in showing graffiti artists, like #Fab5Freddy, #LeeQuiñones, #Zephyr, #Dondi, #LadyPink, and #Futura2000. #KennyScharf (in 1981), #JeanMichelBasquiat (November 1982), and #KeithHaring (February, 1983).

Dondi - An Extreme form of Prayer . A ritual followed by Bengalis as a part of worshipping Maa Shitala, a Hindu Goddess, responsible for the protection from various diseases. People who pray for something, take a dip on Adi Ganga, and start their ritual by lying their face down on the road and then moving forward. When we walk, we move one of our feet forward to take a step, similarly lying down and getting up to move forward is equivalent to a single step. This continues until the person who has prayed to the Goddess, reached the temple, post which another session with fire related rituals begins. For someone like me, who is a sucker for chasing events and rituals, it was a sad moment today as I couldn't manage the time to cover this year. But l randomly remembered that I had the blessed opportunity to capture this event live, back in 2019. And trust me, I didn't even have a single idea on what it was. I initially planned to upload it back then, as a series named "Ritual". But who can ever change God's plan? After 5 YEARS, this series, which has always been very close to my heart, will finally see the light of the day and I'm thankful to each and every people and moment that had been a part of this series, starting from that one guy in the photowalk pointing out, to me randomly capturing just 4 images, coz I didn't think it necessary enough (SILLY ME), to me not publishing it back in 2019, to the very few people to whom I had shown this motivating me to publish this, to me finally publishing it here, in 2024. . RIP Patti Astor the legendary creator of Fun Gallery 📸 by Martha Cooper, Jane Dickson (2nd photo) & Fernando Natalici “Patti Astor was queen of the downtown scene. She arrived in NYC in 1975 with stardom on her mind. In a short time, she was in demand in underground No Wave films and was one of the creative sparks that put the East Village on the cultural map. But Patti Astor was also sick of the "established" uptown art gallery scene, filled with "white walls, white wine, and white people." She knew many graffiti and hip-hop artists, and understood that like the punk artists playing downtown, the uptown rappers and painters used the city as a backbeat and canvas for their work. When Astor and partner #BillStelling launched FUN Gallery in 1981, they moved #graffiti and hip-hop into a gallery space, bringing uptown sensibilities downtown. FUN Gallery's goal was to be a gallery for artists not buyers. It opened its doors to the people and kids who actually lived in the East Village. Patti Astor wanted art for everyone. FUN was the place artists could show without losing any of their street creds, and so the work of many of the cutting edge artists of the early 1980s--such as #JeanMichelBasquiat, Keith Haring, #Dondi, #Futura2000, FAB 5 FREDDY, #LeeQuinones, #KennyScharf, and #LadyPink--could be seen there. It also was known for its terrific parties.
