I don't normally take anything this old, but here we have a TISSOT Cal. 20 which was a presentation watch to the grandfather of a friend of mine. It's seen a few people in there. Only a bit of the radium lume is left. He was in the navy and it was presented by his work mates at the Garden Island Naval Base in 1942. Movement was pretty good. Only needed the mainspring replaced. Amplitudes in the 260's. A now rare exception to apartment blocks over 8 storeys on Woolloomooloo Hill or Darlinghurst Ridge is this. Jenner, a high Victorian mansion built to the design of Edmund Blacket in 1871. John Horbury Hunt probably assisted Blacket, for client, retailer Lebbeus Hordern (of Darling Point: remember him?). Originally called Stramshall. Part of the 1866 subdivision of colonial secretary Alexander Macleay's 54 acres. Hence, new Macleay Street... Thomas Rowe designed its later, third floor built in 1877 for then owner, JT Neale. It was renemed Kurragheen, and later Lugano. Regency Revival style lower 2 floors and Italianate Revival elsewhere. It became a private hospital named Jenner in 1915 during the first world war. From 1940-98 it was acquired by the Commonwealth (federal) government as part of resumptions to create the Captain Cook Graving Dock. Jenner's harbourfront garden and jetty was destroyed. From 1952 hospital use ceded to Naval Fleet canteen (very nice), really, a bar. From 1998 it became a private home again. Bomera and Tarana: no.1 Wylde Street, Potts Point: a rare pair of adjacent houses built for 2 generations of an important Australian family. Nearly all their contemporaries are long gone. Once the coast from Potts Point to Darling was dotted with 'marine villas' like these, or more modest. No more! Bomera (1856-8) was designed by John Frederick Hilly (architect neighbour, uphill) for Windsor merchant, William McQuade Sr. in early Victorian Italianate style. Four other lots were his to the west, plus jetty, bathing pool and Australian Subscription Boat Club (1861). Maritime pursuits! William Sr.died in 1885 and his estate was divided between his 3 Cambridge-educated sons. Tarana was built for Wm's son Arthur Frederick Hale McQuade by 1889. Farewell to Bomera's glasshouses and sheds. Ah well, so it goes! The state government acquired Bomera's land in 1910 after an 11 year battle over acquiring both properties. Bomera itself was acquired by the Sydney Harbour Trust in 1917. It was used as a boarding house from c1902-41. Cowper Wharf Roadway ate up its warerfront garden from 1911. They and precinct were snaffled for wartime use: Tarana as Naval Fleet Base from 1941. Wylde Street was extended from a cul de sac at Bomera's stables door to almost encircle both on their headland. Garden Island and HMAS Kuttabul naval base remain neighbours but both villas were bought back into private ownership in 2001 and have been homes since. Tarana is 3 apartments. A fragment of garden remains around both. A precious Queenskand kauri tree is NW of Bomera. Built by Tenix Defence Systems and launched on the 23rd of May, 1998, this 3,810tonne ANZAC Class frigate has a length of 118m by a beam of 15m and a draught of 4m. She can reach speeds of 27knots(50kph) which is achieved through her single General Electric LM 2500 gas turbine (30,000hp) and double MTU 12v 1163 TB83 Diesel engines (8,840hp). She's mainly renowned for her service during 'Operation Catalyst' in the 2005 invasion of Iraq, and for engaging in anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and East African waters.
