Project Showcase ⁠ ⁠ This Mid-century Modern property in Beckenham, with a split-level garden, has just sold via @themodernhouse for above the asking price. ⁠ ⁠ I must say I am very happy for the clients who had created and curated such a lovely home. ⁠ ⁠ The brief was to maintain the lower level as an enclosed sheltered dining area. In the sunny part of the upper section, a paved area for a bench as well as an all-weather path. Planting to include, pinks, mauves, pinks and white flowers with lots of seasonal interested as this garden was directly off the kitchen. The clients were very happy with the design and planting; ⁠ ⁠ “We are thrilled with our new garden. Working with Carole has been a pleasure throughout. Our garden is small, on two levels, and is north-facing, so it’s not the easiest plot. But Carole has made the most of every square inch. This is partly down to her re-positioning of the steps and the clever inclusion of a built-in bench. Broad Walks⠀ ⠀ It’s not really a surprise that I have a lot of conversations about paths, and I have finally had a brief which includes creating a boardwalk ❤️⠀ 🌿 ⠀ I love these Scandinavian style walkways, they aren’t super practical; if you need to carry a lot of items or need to have access in the depths of winter. Colour Coded⠀ ⠀ I am dreaming of warmer climes and holidays today, which always has me thinking of colours like this. ⠀ 🌿⠀ A colour wheel is a useful tool in interior design, which can also be applied to planting scheme design, to help develop a pleasing garden palette. Swipe left and you will see it's based on the three primary colours -- red, yellow, and blue. A full colour wheel resembles a rainbow, with red and orange next to yellow, followed by green, blue, purple, and violet. Generally speaking, warm colours are red through chartreuse while cool colours are green through violet.⠀ 🌿⠀ One way to combine colours in the garden is to choose complementary colours. That means selecting plants in colours that are across from one another on the colour wheel. For example, red is across from green, orange is across from blue, and, as in this bright array, yellow is across from purple. ⠀ 🌿⠀ However, in the case of this image taken in @kelseypark @kelseyparkBeckenham they’ve used the whole wheel! Spring Bulbs⠀ ⠀ If you haven’t already you need to crack on and order your Spring bulbs now! As you should be planting them in the next few weeks.⠀ 🌿⠀ My personal favourites are ballerina tulips. Push Yourself⠀ ⠀ I am not a great fan of ‘motivational statements’ (unless they are about sharks 😉 but this one really resonates. ⠀ 🌿⠀ I have realised over the last 6 years, as I’ve become a full-time creative, that the designs I’ve done where I’ve pushed myself; to be a bit more daring, added a concept or element after having to research new principles, materials or plants or I’ve had to think a bit more left field to solve a challenge of the site. Garden Lighting⠀ ⠀ In Winter it’s lovely to look out on a garden which has some ambient and decorative lighting. Not only does this create warmth, where darkness would normally be but it will draw your eye outwards, making your indoor space feel larger.⠀ 🌿⠀ During the summer months, our outside spaces become almost like another room in the home, so it makes sense that we need to find a way to light them after the sun sets. ⠀ 🌿⠀ But, lighting a garden properly can be deceptively tricky to do. Winter is Best⠀ ⠀ Despite our inclination, Winter really is the ideal time to have your garden redesigned. ⠀ The survey, briefing meeting, design work, presentation and costing out can all take place over the winter months. ⠀ 🌿⠀ Which allows the landscaping to be scheduled in for early spring. Followed by the planting in late spring.⠀ 🌿⠀ I started designing this garden in the Autumn of 2019, we undertook the build over the winter, with a few hold-ups thanks to the wettest winter on record and lockdown! We were all done and dusted by the summer of 2020. Flowers of October⠀ ⠀ Following on from yesterdays post about wildlife; one of the best things you can do to help our bee population is plant things that will flower for as much of the year as possible, giving them a nectar boost before they hibernate. ⠀ 🌿⠀ October is a tricky month for flowers, however you do have some options; asters, sedum (hylotelephium), dahlia (single flower varieties ideally), Japanese anemones, Salvias, Verbena bonerensis, Echinacea and some varieties of Hydrangea. Also, bulbs like nerine, Cyclamen hederifolium and Hesperantha. ⠀ 🌿⠀ And if your garden is looking a bit gloomy already, get yourself down the garden centre and buy something in bud. My mate bought some fantastic echinacea covered in buds last week in Tesco of all places. Harvest⠀ ⠀ Your garden can give you fruits, nuts, seeds and berries at this time of the year which makes it feel like an optimistic time of the year; when you start to harvest pears, apples, nuts and so forth. There is something quite primitive in the pleasure of it. Dahlias⠀ ⠀ Grow dahlias for gorgeous, colourful flowers that bloom from midsummer through autumn, when many plants are past their best! The tubers are planted in the ground in late spring. ⠀ 🌸⠀ Thought of as high maintenance as they need to be dug up and stored over winter, there is a school of thought now that it’s ok to leave them over winter in the ground with a bit of mulch to protect, which I am definitely going to try next year. Last Days of Summer⠀ ⠀ It’s good for the soul to extend the flowering time in your garden, as it not only makes you feel that summer isn't over yet, but also it's good for the pollinators as it gives them extra food to see them through the winter. So for the next few posts, I am going to be talking about great late summer flowering plants.⠀ 🌿⠀ This is an Adonis Blue Butterfly however there is also a Buddleia Adonis Blue - a compact, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub with wide arching branches and lance-shaped leaves. Adonis’s perform best when grown in a sunny, well-drained garden. ⠀ 🌿⠀ They are great for a low maintenance, wildlife enticing, garden. Autumn⠀ ⠀ Eek today is the first day of Autumn, this year has just been plain weird…if you’d told me, back in January that I was going to spend most of it at home, not seeing my friends or family, not going to meet my business networking crew, not getting dressed up and going 'out out' or having those impromptu pop to the pub evenings after a day at the drawing board. What makes me tick…⠀ ⠀ I thought I’d show my face to the new followers I’ve acquired recently and tell you a bit about my journey.⠀ 🌿⠀ For the first half 24 of my life, I was a full-time employee (or student). About 12 years ago I was arranging a mortgage and suddenly the realisation hit me. I wasn’t even halfway through my working life and I had another 25 years of work ahead of me, that’s a life sentence! ⠀ 🌿⠀ What was I working towards? The initial plan for the 2nd half was to have a boutique career; part media consultant and part interior designer and that did work well for a few years. ⠀ 🌿⠀ Then I started a Diploma in Garden Design out of personal interest and I have never looked back, from the first seminar I just knew this is what I wanted to do! This is my dream job; being paid to be creative, problem-solving, design planting, being outdoors a few days per month. There isn't one bit I don't love! Small Garden Trees⠀ ⠀ One of the most common mistakes I see in gardens, is the lack of visual height; often the only thing to look at on eye level are fences and a trampoline… And if that’s the case, that is what your eye will be drawn to, no matter how many flowers you have or how perfect your lawn is! ⠀ 🌿⠀ I mentioned in a pervious post that pergolas can work well to draw the eye however nothing does it as well as a small tree. You want a tree that won’t grow much above 3-5m high. Broadwalk ⠀ ⠀ It’s not really a surprise that I have a lot of conversations about paths, and I have finally had a brief which includes creating a boardwalk ❤️⠀ 🌿⠀ I love these Scandinavian style walkways, they aren’t super practical; if you need to carry a lot of items or need to have access in the depths of winter. BOX⠀ ⠀ I don’t think I have seen a box (the shrub Buxus sempervirens) this year in SE London that isn’t suffering from Box Moth Caterpillar, Box Blight or both…and it’s so hard to protect against both diseases. ⠀ 🌿⠀ Remove the caterpillars if you see them, use pheromone traps to catch the adult moths, nematodes (tiny parasitic worms) that kill the larvae might help. As will encouraging birds into your garden, as the latest news from RHS is that thrushes have been observed predating them. And ensuring your plants are as healthy as possible; with sufficient water and lots of feeding is a very good idea.⠀ 🌿⠀ However, if your plant already looks more than half dead, I’d remove it and plant something else instead like; Yew, Pittosporum, Ilex Crenata, Bergeris, Euonymus, Lonicera Nitida. Be more Queenie⠀ ⠀ We are spending more time in our gardens and using them as extensions of our homes. It’s now commonplace to entertain in your garden, which is quite ‘queenie’ when you think about it 😉⠀ 🌿⠀ Personally, I don’t like those really expensive, shiny outdoor kitchens; I just don’t feel they always work for a relaxed garden space. I do however love these shabby-chic, rustic style kitchen/prep-areas and have been working with a couple of my clients on creating something quirky and individual for their outdoor spaces.⠀ 🌿⠀ Utilising hardwearing materials that will look good with a bit of weathering: hardwood, concrete, wrinkly tin or a galvanised bucket. Get your plumber to make taps from copper pipework. Shade Sails⠀ ⠀ I am increasingly being asked by clients if I can consider some sort of flexible shade option whilst developing their design. A good quality awning is a perfect solution to create an almost year-round sheltered space, @Shadedcube do some wonderful solutions.⠀ 🌿⠀ However, when the budget doesn’t stretch, or the placement doesn’t allow for an awning; then a simple set of oak posts set out as a pergola and a shade sail make for a great solution. Espalier ⠀ ⠀ What is that you ask? Well, its when you train a tree, or other woody plants, often a fruit tree so it grows in a 2-dimensional way, as this image shows. It allows you to grow a tree along a wall which not only saves space but the tree benefits from the shelter and increased warmth that the wall brings.⠀ 🌿⠀ I’ve specified a couple of espalier trained apple trees in a project this year, to go against a terrace wall. Water Trough ⠀ ⠀ How utterly beautiful is this image? It tunes into my atavistic farm girl ancestry if I have any - which I doubt! ⠀ 💦⠀ I’ve just designed a water feature for a client with a similar water feature which spills into a rill. Life as we know it..⠀ ⠀ 'Gardening is no longer a hobby but a manifestation of humanity’, I read that in @elledecorationuk the other day so it must be true 😉. ⠀ 🌿⠀ I wasn’t always a gardener, once upon a time I was a 30-year-old Media Exec with a work hard/play hard lifestyle and I slept in until midday every weekend. Then we moved into our first house with a garden. I always need my surroundings to look good, so I just had to get on with sorting it out. ⠀ 🌿⠀ Fortunately, I had a biology degree, so it wasn’t a totally alien set of conditions to me, like I knew how plants worked. One of my best friends brought me a book for Christmas - The Complete Guide to Gardening and I never looked back. Pots⠀ ⠀ Recently I’ve been helping a client, to source a feature object for her garden. It’s the closest I get to be like an interior designer these days, so I find it quite fun. After & Before ⠀ …of a small urban garden in Sydenham⠀ ⠀ As you can see the ‘bones’ were good but it didn’t meet the clients’ needs at all; with a wasted area by the shed behind a screen, incomplete paving, a rotten deck, no shade in the south-facing space and overgrown shrubs with no herbaceous perennials.⠀ 🌿⠀ We matched in the paving, which will weather-in over this winter, added oak posts and a shade sail, new decking, decorative lighting and lots of new planting which is maturing nicely. The clients finished off with a new lawn. Total budget for this refresh about £ 7-6500.⠀ 🌿⠀ Lovely Testimonial as well;⠀ ‘I highly recommend Carole, she took our overgrown, unmanageable garden and created our perfect, low maintenance stylish space. Wildflowers⠀ ⠀ Poppies are part of our wildflower ecosystem and they have become quite rare in many rural areas of the UK.⠀ 🌿⠀ They are very much a positive memory from my childhood in Scotland. Scarpa⠀ ⠀ I haven’t banged on about the architect Scarpa in ages. Texture ⠀ ⠀ Similar to the discipline of Interior Design, one should consider texture as a key element in your planting design to elevate your border. Form and colour are also important but don’t forget texture which will create a more visual drama to catch the eye.⠀ 🌿⠀ I love this image as it also shows that a little bit of texture in your hard landscaping can raise the game too. These clever brick rows catch the light, changing shape through the day and the mother in law’s tongue below mirrors this wonderfully (Sansevieria trifasciata native to Africa). Ponds⠀ ⠀ The last of my staycation garden tips - Introducing a pond is the best way to create new habitat in your garden for the local wildlife. It’s definitely something you can do for yourself.⠀ 🌿⠀ Pick your spot ideally in the sunshine, as that is much better for the wildlife. ⠀ 🌿⠀ 1. You will need a pond liner, good spade for digging, rocks for the edges, sand and aquatic plants⠀ 2. Dig a hole, with a couple of shelves, at the deepest part it should be 3 feet approx.⠀ 3. Have one side gently sloping, so the wee beasties can crawl out ⠀ 4. Line the area with sand⠀ 5. Then spread the liner over the sand, hold it in place with the rocks or logs around the edges⠀ 6. Fill gradually with water. Ideally with rainwater, but tap water is fine if there’s not enough rain⠀ 7. Place the plants on the shelves in aquatic planting baskets, they will probably come in these but buy them if they don’t⠀ 8. Last Day⠀ ⠀ It’s the last full day of my holiday in the Scottish Lothians visiting the family. A whole week off, the most time I have had off from my business for 2 years! I had a packed itinerary, crammed with many sites and gardens - there will be blogs to follow, watch this space! ⠀ 🌿⠀ Its great fun being a tourist in the place one grew up, but then it has miles and miles of beautiful coastline, countryside and a whole city which is an UNESCO world heritage site…so not too shabby!⠀ 🌿⠀ I’ve also been reminded recently, by one of my lovely clients @stephanos_kaisharis, how important it is not to forget your roots; the geography but also the culture and your own family heritage. I am proud to say I come from a long line of fishing folk, on both sides of my family. Willow Dens⠀ ⠀ I’ve just designed a play space with a willow den, it is worth considering dens for your kids, we all remember our own dens fondly do we not? ⠀ 🌿⠀ If you have children under 5, then you will probably get around 5 years play out of Wendy houses, dependent on the age gaps. If your children are nearly teenagers, then a more private, sheltered place to sit may be a better investment.⠀ 🌿⠀ A simple shed/summer house with some clever additions may work as a Wendy house in the early years and as a teenage den later. It’s also worth thinking about how it will be used – are you happy for the children to be unsupervised? A den at the bottom of the garden is great for older children but would need to be in the line of sight for younger children. ⠀ 🌿⠀ If you decide on major landscaping work it can be useful to run power points and lighting to play areas as well, oh and WIFI for teenagers. Garden Play ⠀ ⠀ If you are lucky enough to have a garden, then developing some fun and educational garden activities for your kids has never been as important!⠀ 🌿⠀ Perhaps the best way to teach your little ones to appreciate your garden, and to have a truly child-friendly garden, is by helping them engage with it at an early age. ⠀ 🌿⠀ Dedicate an area where they can create mud-pies and grow things; fast-growing plants and seeds like nasturtiums and sunflowers are great for being both quick and fairly hardy. Hoverflies⠀ ⠀ It’s now getting to the end of the summer and our insect population, which is so relied upon by the rest of our wildlife, still need to collect nectar. ⠀ 🌿⠀ It’s important when designing a planting scheme to select plants to give the garden the longest flowering period as possible. In part to make the garden colourful for longer but also to give our pollinators food for as long as possible. ⠀ 🌿⠀ Spring and Summer are easier; starting with bulbs and early flowering plants like this Euphorbia mellifera, going through to summer. Nasturtiums⠀ ⠀ How’s the garden looking for your staycation?⠀ 🌿⠀ Have all the flowering plants in your garden gone over yet, are you wishing you had a bit more colour for the Autumn? Or are the kids bored and you’ve still got a few weeks of the holidays left? ⠀ 🌿⠀ Well fear not, just plant some nasturtiums (Tropaelum majus), flowers come in creams, yellows, oranges, reds and coral pinks. Aff Hame⠀ ⠀ So this year, like many I am going to have a staycation.⠀ 🌿⠀ I’m off (aff) to see the family and a few friends, as due to workload, feet operations and lockdown I haven’t been home since June 2019 😱 So even though it’s a busy time for me, I SO want to go home, plus I needed a wee break to recharge my creative batteries.⠀ 🌿⠀ I have a bucket list of gardens and places I want to go and visit, including climbing Auther’s Seat for the first time in my life!! Inspiration Botanicals⠀ ⠀ Like so many creative industries, fashion is endlessly inspired by flora. One of the things that drives me to be the best designer I can be, is the opportunity to create gardens that inspire my clients.⠀ 🌿⠀ Even if it’s just to relax with a glass of wine after a day at the office, surrounded by cottage perennials or reading a book amongst neat, structured planting in soft greens and whites. Forest Bathing⠀ ⠀ This image immediately makes me think of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, which draws on the therapeutic powers of nature and connects people with the natural environment. ⠀ 🌿⠀ It’s now one of the cornerstones of Japanese healthcare apparently, how forward-thinking are those guys?! Another Fantastic Testimonial⠀ We engaged Carole pre-lockdown. It was clear instantly from a site meeting in Feb she understood what we wanted. ⠀ ⠀ We wanted something to soften our mid-terrace long narrow garden, it’s a common problem & we hated the squareness of it. This time last year I posted that Greenland lost 12.5 Billion tons of ice in just one day!! ⠀ 🌏⠀ And, that based on current global warming data, that ice wasn’t expected to melt until 2070.⠀ 🌏⠀ The Covid crisis has reduced emissions substantially, however, I very much see everything getting back to normal; more cars on the road, more planes…. And I am increasingly despairing of the global political situation with so many global leaders just pretending climate change isn't happening at an uncontrollable rate as it won't keep them in power! (some of the same ones who denied the Cv19 crisis until it was too late, you know to whom I refer!) Mood-boards For Design Presentations⠀ 🌺⠀ As part of the Design Concept Presentation, I always walk my clients through a collection of mood-boards, to give a clear idea of what each area of the garden will look like. ⠀ 🌺⠀ This includes planting colour ways and themes, hard landscaping, entertaining zones, kid-friendly play-zones, water features and so on. It’s a fairly time-consuming element to pull together however I feel it’s really important to communicate the vision, so the client can imagine how their garden will look at the end of the process. Irrigation⠀ ⠀ We offer irrigation systems as part of our service. When discussing this with clients, it’s often perceived as being an expensive luxury item. Sure, pop-up sprinklers systems will set you back thousands of pounds due to the lack of water pressure we have in the UK. However, a simple dripline solution for beds, will cost about £500- £600 in your average medium-sized garden. ⠀ 💧⠀ It’s very flexible, so you can turn it off when the weather is really wet and increase the time it’s on if it gets very dry. Reduce the frequency in winter when plants aren’t growing as much etc. can also help with rain shade in Winter months. I’ve noticed that even my most diligent clients, who are all over the watering in hot weather forget about rain shade in wet weather, where overhanging trees stop the underplanting from getting enough water. ⠀ 💧⠀ We always set up after the plants are in, to ensure the plants that need it get the most water and we aren’t wasting any water on plants that can cope with a bit less. We also set it up so it’s going overnight when it won’t be affecting your water pressure and will be less wasteful, reducing evaporation in hot weather. Irrigation combined with well-mulched flower beds, I personally think is a more sustainable use of water than watering by hose every couple of days in dry weather and hoping for the best when it rains. Seedheads & Silhouettes⠀ 🌺⠀ Monarda, Salvia and Alliums all make a lovely planting combination, however, the added bonus will be the seedheads from the Alliums and Monarda which will add interest and structure to this scheme long after the flowers have faded.⠀ 🌺⠀ Monarda is a lovely aromatic summer flowering herbaceous perennial which is irresistible to bees. There are both perennial and annual varieties of Monarda, but most commonly grown and widely available for best value select the perennial varieties which come again each year.⠀ 🌺⠀ Monarda's common names are Bee Balm, as it has great allure to the bees, and also Bergamot because the leaves are scented and when rubbed it is said they smell similar to the Bergamot oranges. Some varieties can be short-lived perennials, almost annuals really, such as ‘Bergamo'. What’s involved?⠀ So you want your garden designed; here’s the process⠀ 🌿⠀ In the Initial Consultation, I will talk about you about your aspirations, how you imagine you and your family will use the space and how you’d like it to look, in general terms. Don’t worry too much about the what and how. It’s my job as your designer to figure that out for you, but it gives me a good idea of the scope of the project.⠀ 🌿⠀ The next stage will be the Briefing Meeting, this takes about an hour. I use our questionnaire and there is lots of discussions to figure out what you really want. It’s very useful if, in advance, you’ve collected some images of how you would like the final garden to look as this can be hard to convey in words sometimes.⠀ 🌿⠀ I then conduct a Site Survey & Analysis; looking at the space, surroundings, aspect, microclimate, sounds, even smells. Flashback⠀ ⠀ Have you ever been to Sissinghurst Castle, situated in the romantically named Weald of Kent? The gardens are in a lovely rural setting and the tearooms overlook a field, which had sheep grazing in it when we were there. What more does one want than a lazy sunny afternoon in a bucolic idol, with scones? ⠀ 🌿⠀ You enter the gardens through an archway in an Elizabethan building, which was used as a library and reception space by the couple. Through which you come into a large courtyard garden surrounded by a high wall and the Elizabethan tower at the far end. This courtyard is surrounded by beautifully tended borders of purple and mauve planting.⠀ 🌿⠀ Exiting to the left, you enter another room which is the famous White Garden. Full of white gladioli, white iris, and the white Japanese anemones. Iconic Pavements ⠀ ⠀ Iconic Pavements aren’t usually eye-catching, they’re a functional piece of the city space. But Roberto Burle Marx turned them into a work of art.⠀ 🌿⠀ In 1970, Burle Marx & Cia were commissioned to transform the beachfront in Rio’s Copacabana district as part of a larger project to widen the sidewalks and protect its hotels and apartments from the tide. They’ve become an iconic part of Rio, landscaping as it’s most iconic!⠀ 🌿⠀ Burle Marx’s innovative Modernist designs quickly gained recognition. Mondrian Screen⠀ ⠀ Piet Mondrian is no stranger to the De Stijl art movement. His most prominent works consist of lines and an overlay of primary colours that, until today, serve as inspirations to fashion houses and artists all around the world. ⠀ 🌿⠀ His ventures from the Netherlands to Paris, then London and finally New York, where he remained until his death, witnessed some of his greatest influences in arts and design, fashion, architecture and cultural references.⠀ 🌿⠀ Screens like this can be used to great effect in garden design. Seedheads & Silhouettes⠀ ⠀ This is an image of Pulsatilla vulgaris which are lovely flowers and seedheads. I must get some for my garden soon although they like light, well-drained conditions in full sunlight, so I think I’ll have to have them in a pot as my soil is on the clay side, despite my best efforts.⠀ 🌿⠀ Pulsatilla vulgaris is known for attracting bees and other pollinators. It has nectar/pollen-rich flowers. Grown to best effect towards the edge of a raised bed in alpine planting scheme or rock garden. Japanese Design⠀ ⠀ Japanese gardens have been a huge influence on my design style for sure. Influencing garden design in Europe from the middle of the 1900’s you just have to think of Monet’s water lily paintings. ⠀ 🌺⠀ At Giverny Monet wanted to create a water garden ‘both for the pleasure of the eye and for the purpose of having subjects to paint'. He enlarged the existing pond, filling it with exotic new hybrid water lilies and built a humpback bridge at one end, inspired by examples seen in Japanese prints. The water garden became the main obsession of Monet’s later career and the subject of some 250 paintings!⠀ 🌺⠀ Giverny is most definitely on my bucket list! Fences⠀ Garden fences can be a bit of an afterthought, they can look very smart although that can come with a hefty budget.⠀ 🌿⠀ If you want to focus your budget elsewhere then go with a standard option and make sure the fence blends into the background.
