They actually have a structure they built as the foundation then the bakers come and decorate that with gingerbread shingles and icing, chocolate and powder sugar. Christmas is coming! The countdown has begun!! So the search begins for us mums of coeliac kids to find a gluten free gingerbread house kit. And they aren’t too easy to locate! They have kits in Lakeland (never tried), some small GF artisan bakers have ready made ones or it’s down to you finding a mould & instructions instead. A few years ago, I found a cutter online that makes gingerbread houses - gluten free or not - the easiest thing ever!! From that I created a paper template so you can make your own! When making a gingerbread house, you need some time & patience to make one, along with a few tins to hold it all in place using Royal Icing. Don’t attempt it without using Royal Icing!! It’ll never hold!! Now would you attempt to make your own? It’s really not that hard, it’s about getting the biscuits firm, the icing right & a firm foundation. It’s totally possible!! If I can do it, so can you!! All you need are the ingredients, time, willing helpers, a solid base for the foundation & plenty of GF sweets!! Certainly starts Xmas celebrations off! Glorious Gluten Free Gingerbread. No filter, no edit, real. When you see pictures that are highly edited (most of mine aren't), you think, I can't do that with my kids. That's impossible. I'm all about being real, camera's can adjust how or what it should be truly like if up close & personal. If you are making these with your children, you are supposed to have fun, less stress and make something edible for the end result. This is the same gingerbread house as in all the other pictures, with the original background. The kitchen was a mess, icing was pretty much everywhere as were the sweets. Note to self - do what you tell everyone else - put them on a plate!! It doesn't look perfect or right, but what it does look like is that someone had a lot of fun making it. That it put a smile on their face when they thought they couldn't make one any longer. It's about finding work arounds, for when you are or have Coeliac Disease, you can miss out on a lot. Too much. And it's not necessary. I firmly believe anything & everything can be adapted. This is our gingerbread house from last year. One we built together one that got broken up (more fun) and eaten!! We do really need to get on and make one this weekend - I've some Christmas cakes to marzipan and ice first. Then Christmas is truly upon us. Gingerbread houses are definitely to be added back onto the list next year. I was posting them out last year ready to build & decorate. Go on, have a go. With a couple of tin cans to hold it all up (that is the big trick!) anything is possible! You just might surprise yourself and your kids. Or do what friends did last year, a deconstructed house. Everything got decorated, but not built! But they had fun, and that is the key point! Having fun together, making time and being present. There are lots of recipes online & this was by @beckyexcell mini gingerbread house recipe from her website. It was just enough for creating our big house. We did this activity yesterday all day - between making the dough, drawing and cutting out paper templates for the gingerbread man and tree, cutting the house templates into the dough, baking them, assembling and decorating, it took us ~9 hours. The perfect covid lockdown December activity! #deats To decorate, we used @yumearth Giggles, pomegranate licorice, lollipops, Rolling Stones (thanks to @spokininc for these treats) @librenaturals oatmeal, @vermontnutfree peppermint bark and sprinkles, homemade royal icing. Since I can't buy a gingerbread house kit (cause gluten) I decided to make my own. She drew a diagram, rolled out her homemade dough, and cut each piece to specification and then baked them. The cookies are soft and chewy and strong enough to hold together #myheartstrings and I put it all together and decorated it. Complete with a #wreath a fully decorated #christmastree a #snowman #santassleighandreindeer and 3 little gingerbread people. 1 girl (Nayeli) and 2 boys (Valeo and P). JP is hidden inside the house with the Christmas tree and wall art. Yes even the inside is decorated. We have a #gummystepstone path way set in #cobblestonesprinkles 😂😂 the attention to detail these kids put into this made my head spin. The chimney is filled with frosting and MnM’s.
