A tower to protect them .. . . This is the famous Glendalough round tower in Wicklow. They are early mediaeval stone towers of a type found mainly in Ireland. A tower of this kind is generally found in the vicinity of a church or monastery, with the door of the tower facing the west doorway of the church. A possible purpose for the tower would be for taking shelter during raids. The elevated doorway could have had a ladder that would be drawn up during raids, and the thick stone walls could withstand most attacks. Since the doors always face where a church stood, this also adds weight to the theory they were where monks would evacuate to. This photo was taken just before driving through the Wicklow mountains. Where my aunt got to comfortable driving on the left side of the road. Some boulders from the stone walls had come loose and she got too close. Our tire was completely slashed and of course the rental company gave us no spare 😭 this all happened in the tiny area that also had zero cell phone service. Here we are in a different country stuck on the side of the road. Luckily I was able to flag down a young man who stopped to help. He knew the area well and knew exactly where to get service and called us some help. Two hours later we were on our way again. So thankful for that young man and the tire guys who helped us out, kept us good company and gave us some good tips for the rest of the trip. Far away, in the Wicklow Mountains .. . . You can find one of my favourite spots (although busy at times), Glendalough. Steeped in history it’s an early Christian monastic settlement that was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and from this developed the ‘Monastic City’. Female Saints of Ireland: https://dalkeycastle.com/home/about/ With the upcoming St. Brigid's Day, we are reminded here in Dalkey of our own, St. Begnet. The atmospheric 10th Century Granite Church here at Dalkey Castle, named after St. Begnet, probably replaced an earlier wooden church dating back to the 7th Century Early Christian period. Much of the story of St. Begnet is lost in the mists of history. Her name is recorded in the genealogies of Irish saints as Becnat, daughter of Colman, from the aristocratic family line of Dál Messin Corb. This family ruled Leinster, but around 700AD lost their power and were confined mainly to the Wicklow mountains. St. Kevin of Glendalough was also thought to be from the same family line. Kilbegnet (Church of St. Begnet in Irish) was considered to be a pilgrimage stop on the way to the great monastic settlement at Glendalough. St. Begnet is now the patron saint of Dalkey and her feast day is on the 12th November, as recorded in the medieval Book of Obits & Martyrology at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. Glendalough monastic settlement was founded in the early 6th century soon after St Kevin came to Ireland. I was the only one there on a rainy Saturday, which was the perfect ambiance for walking around monastic ruins and graveyards. I also drove through the Wicklow mountains very early before the sun was up, and so saw absolutely nothing of the Wicklow mountains except the greenery on the sides of the road that was whipping around because it was CRAZY windy 😂 Prayed for you all at Glendalough! . 📍Glendalough Monastery, Wicklow, Ireland 🇮🇪 I do love ruins and this was such a magical place filled with them. Situated in gorgeous Wicklow County, this is what remains of Glendalough Cathedral located where St. Kevin founded his monastery in the 6th century. It’s a pretty large area that holds not only the remains if the monastic site but also has some lovely woods to meander in and a peaceful lake. Sundays are for churches .. . . St. Kevin’s Church, better known as St. Kevin’s Kitchen, is a nave-and-chancel church of the 12th century. It is called St Kevin’s kitchen because people believed that the bell tower was a chimney to a kitchen but really no food was ever cooked there. St. Kevin’s Church is a superb example of the Irish builders desire to integrate a circular bell-tower or belfry with a rectangular church. It was a dream of mine to see Glendalough in the autumn & I was thinking about the place a lot lately & here we are 🧡 I worked yesterday morning, drove the 3 hours to Wicklow & when we got here the light was already fading but those trees just stood out completely. GLENDALOUGH . . Just as with Blarney Castle, I wish we had more time to spend in this beautiful nature park. There are several walking trails of varying difficulty. And I think even the shortest one could easily take a few hours – time that we did not have, unfortunately. However, I am very happy that we were able to stay at least a couple of hours here, enjoying the short walk and the 50 shades of green Irish scenery. Glendalough é um dos territórios religiosos mais belos e mais importantes da Irlanda, você sabia? Fica no condado de Wicklow e dista mais ou menos 63 quilômetros do centro de Dublin. Pode-se ir até lá utilizando o transporte público (prepare-se, a viagem é longa, leva mais de duas horas e meia), carro, motocicleta ou em tours com guias (foi como eu visitei Glendalough). De carro serão aproximadamente 50-55 minutos. Glendalough foi fundado no século VI por St. Kevin mas tropas inglesas destruíram o sítio em 1398. Kevin era irlandês oriundo de uma família importante e foi criado na região de Glendalough, educado por três religiosos. Crescido, ele retornou a Glendalough e fundou o monastério. Hoje são as ruínas do monastério - lindas, interessantes, cheias de história irlandesa - o que visitamos, inclusive a antiga torre com mais de 30 metros de altura que na época servia como proteção de ataques de vikings, além da igreja de St. Mary e a igreja de St. Kevin, construções datadas do século XII e um grande cemitério medieval onde - segundo dizem - ainda hoje são feitos sepultamentos. A entrada em Glendalough é gratuita, e se há um passeio que realmente a Design de Viagem by Lena Reis recomenda é esse site monástico, bem como as montanhas de Wicklow e lagos adjacentes.
