This evening, Walpurgis Night (or “Spring Halloween”), is believed to be an occasion when the veil between worlds thins with the change of seasons, allowing ancient spirits and spectral guests to pass through. This night was historically celebrated with feasting and bonfires intended to ward off the evil spirits and witches who were said to be convening then. May 1st marks the Gaelic May Day festival known as Beltane, which celebrates the beginning of the summer months and also involves the lighting of large bonfires (originally with the purpose of blessing and protecting livestock being moved to their summer pastures). Malicious faeries, the Aos Sí, were believed to be especially active on May Day and many of the practices associated with Beltane derive from the purpose of appeasing or warding them off. Deres stykke natur er en lille høj tæt på @moesgaardmuseum. Vi startede med at lave en varde, før børnene begyndte at bygge hjem og skjulestedet til markens små dyr - nogle af dem blev allerede beboet mens vi var der, til sidst såede vi en masse frø, som vi skal ud at se til om en måneds tid. Walpurgisnacht - Day 3 of #folkhorrorweek Tonight marks the feast of St. Walpurga who is commemorated for battling against pests, whooping cough, rabies, and witchcraft. In parts of Europe people will light bonfires (sometimes with witch effigies) to celebrate Walpurga and ward off evil spirits. And like most folk traditions intermixed with religion, Walpurgisnacht is believed to be tied up with older May Day festivities centered around bonfires and celebrations. Of all the “satanic witch” books I’ve read, SLEEWFOOT by @geraldbrom is my favorite and I highly recommend that you pick it up off your TBR stack as soon as possible if it’s still wasting away there. I was lucky enough to read this one with the @my.dark.library bookclub last October and the discussion this book generated was the stuff bookclub dreams are made of. Brom’s story is one that follows some of the standard tropes regarding of the idea of the witch in 17th century Puritanical society. I found this story rooted in folk horror themes deeply moving, provocative, and satisfying. The book is also illustrated with Brom’s original art making a hardcopy edition a must-have. April #RubyHoshReads24 🌸 Two short story collections, A re-read of a childhood favourite, my second non-fiction book of the year, excellent folkhorror, fun meta fantasy, and a sad ghost filled novella. Roads Of Destiny- parallel worlds themed British Library Tales Of The Weird collection. Some really good stories in here, and I loved the editorial decision to include one that is referenced in another story later in the book. Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones- my favourite DWJ book since I was 11. This inspired a lifelong obsession with Tam Lin retellings. Linghun by Ai Jiang- a sad meditation on grief. There's a lot to unpack in this short book and despite its size this was one of the books I spent the most time with this month. Tonight we’re ordering a Pollinator Pizza full of veggies, cheese, and drizzled with honey while we watch a movie from the All The Haunts Be Ours: A Compendium of Folk Horror by @severinfilms to celebrate the conclusion of Day 2 of #FolkHorrorWeek. One of my go-to comfort films that is included in this boxset is @woodlandsdarkanddaysbewitched directed by @kierlajanisse from 2021. During the pandemic I got to catch an early screening of this film at @nightstreamvod in 2020 and I was forever changed. Like, not to be dramatic, but I was. 🌲 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙂𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨 Twenty four years ago, two girls went into the Deeping Woods, and only one returned. No one knows what really lurks in the woods, but there are theories. Olive, the only survivor, goes on another journey of her own when he father disappears after investigating what it is that wakes up every twelve years to take the town’s children. He’s left behind research, and clues, and Olive knows she must return to the woods to save her father and find out what happened to Stacia so long ago. Full of darkness and magic, witchy dark fairy tale world vibes…𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 will make you both intrigued to venture into the woods, and frightened of what may be lurking there. The mystery surrounding the disappearances had a true crime/detective feel to it, even though this is by no means true crime. I did absolutely love the mystery though…the twists and turns…trying to piece everything together…especially when Olive’s memories for the day her friend disappeared begin to return. I also really appreciated the “realness” of Olive’s character. I could see myself acting and feeling much as she did throughout this whole ordeal. If you’re a fan of folksy horror that keeps you turning pages, this may be one for you!
