Bluebell Spirit Medicine You may be seeing bluebells all around at the moment – on your walks, as you drive, or even on your social media feed. Many of us take great pleasure in seeing these delicate blue flowers carpet a woodland floor, and eagerly await their arrival in spring. The woodland by my home has just come into blossom, and once again, there is the invitation to connect with the magic of bluebell spirit medicine. Bluebell is about speaking your own truth, and living your own truth. Its beautiful blue colour connects with the blue of our throat chakra, which asks us to express ourselves authentically wherever we go. The little flowers are like trumpets, inviting us to walk with self-confidence and shine our light unashamedly as we traverse our path. The bluebells also grow in the shade, and so offer us the message that we can bloom and flower in whatever conditions we may find ourselves in. In addition to its spiritual energy medicine, bluebells have also been used as a diuretic and also as a styptic (to stop bleeding). They are toxic, so are not widely used in modern medicine, but this toxicity has been taken advantage of. The sticky sap in bluebells was used to bind books together, and its toxicity deterred silverfish; the bluebell glue was also used to attach feathers on arrows in Elizabethan times. Spring migration is here! The birds are looking fabulous and we could not be more excited. Join us for some weeknight birding on Wednesday, May 8th from 6pm-7:30pm at @johnheinznwr. We can expect to see warblers of all sorts, resident raptors, nesting cuties, and any number of rarities and surprises! Meet someone new, bring the kiddos, a friend, or just yourself and enjoy an early evening serenade from our colorful songbird performers. 🐦⬛🦅🦆🐦🐤 We’ll meet at the picnic pavilion next to the parking lot and move at a slow pace on mostly flat gravel path, slightly uneven grassy path, and paved paths. There are some benches along the way, bathrooms at the start, along with a water fountain. There is plenty of parking and the refuge is a mile from the Eastwick train station and a close walk from the 37 and 108 buses. We spent the night at a small campsite by the Minginui Stream, we had the whole place to ourselves and didn't see another soul the whole time we were there. Linville Falls- we can file this adventure under “there’s no such thing as bad weather”. 🩵 It was 52°F and raining, but we still went. And, it was lovely! We had the best time and there were hardly any other people (which added to the loveliness 😉). The visitor center opened for the first time of the season today and we grabbed a few postcards and Blue Ridge Parkway tokens and were on our way. We almost stayed in, because of the gloom, but we went anyway and were both really happy we did. It was kind of like the Pacific Northwest in North Carolina.
