Veronne Dex# 099 Megistosand the ancient armored fakemon. Evolves from Digxie with Ancient Power. These ancient beasts once roamed all over in prehistoric times. Few enemies could overcome their tough armor plating and those that tried were struck by their dangerous tail tip. Despite looking clunky, the armor plates are actually very light allowing them to be more agile that they appear. Their long claws are used for digging underground nests where they make their homes. Tiny hairs on their paws vibrate extremely fast on the hard ground causing the packed earth to loosen making digging easier.

Is this a giant armadillo? Yes! -- but more closely related to South American armadillos than our familiar nine-banded armadillo. Glyptodonts had thick protective body armor made of interlocking bones called osteoderms that grew in the dermal layer of their skin. The armor was rigid and lacked the “bands” and flexibility seen in living armadillos. The name “glyptodont” means “carved tooth” in Greek, named for the lobed shapes of their teeth. The earliest glyptodonts appeared about 35 million years ago in South America. They dispersed into North America 4 million years ago. By the end of the Pleistocene Epoch several species attained their large size (estimated weights up to 4000 lbs). The late Pleistocene species Glyptotherium cylindricum is known from the US, Mexico, and Central America. The fossil specimen on exhibit at Texas Science & Natural History Museum was collected in 1940 by a WPA crew from a site near Corpus Christi. Plan your visit to see these and the other amazing fossils in our first-floor Paleontology Gallery! http://sciencemuseum.utexas.edu #FossilFriday #glyptodont

Mammoths and sabercats face off in what will one day be known as the valley of Zapotlán, in what is today southern Jalisco, Mexico. The volcano on the background is today extinct, and known as Nevado de Colima in Spanish (or Zapotepetl, "mountain of the sweet fruit", in the indigenous Nahuatl language). Today, it is the tallest mountain in the state (around 4,260 m above sea level), and it also happens to be the tallest mountain I've ever climbed (twice). Today, it is a refuge for the region's last surviving megafauna, but back in the Pleistocene it was an active cone in the volcanic system known as Paleofuego. According to the literature, the valley of Zapotlán was buried by at least three major eruptive events during the Pleistocene; once by the El Cántaro volcano 1,5 million years ago (early Pleistocene); again by Zapotepetl 500,000 years ago or so, and finally in the late Pleistocene, around 30.000 years ago, by the Fuego de Colima which is the active cone nowadays. The repeated eruptions covered the valley in so much volcanic material that fossils are not easy to find at the place, but nearby localities such as Zapotiltic, Zacoalco and Sayula have yielded many fossils of megafauna showing that mammoths, glyptodonts and sabercats., among many others, were present throughout the Pleistocene. The valley also holds the lake known as Laguna de Zapotlán, which is a small remnant of the once immense Jalisco lake system which covered most of western-central Mexico. The valley was cut from the rest of the lake system by the volcanic eruptions, and the lagoon became ever smaller, but is still an important refuge for migratory birds and other wildlife even today. #zapotlan #nevadodecolima #mexico #zapotepetl #volcano #paleoart #jalisco #mexico #hodarinundu #mammoth #sabercat #glyptodont #lake

Prehistoric mammals. 😲 By Nobu Tamura Prehistoric mammals are groups of mammals that became extinct before humans developed writing. 164 million years ago, in the Jurassic period, Castorocauda lutrasimilis, a mammaliaform (mammal-shaped) animal weighing about 500 grams (1.1 lb), had a full mammalian pelt, with guard hairs and underfur, webbed feet, and scales on the tail like a modern beaver, as well as teeth specialized for catching fish. Later, about 130 million years ago in the Cretaceous, there existed larger mammals; a fossil of Repenomamus giganticus indicates that the animal was about 1 meter (3 1⁄4 ft) long. In the stomach of a smaller cousin, Repenomamus robustus at 52 cm (20 1⁄2 in), the remains of a juvenile dinosaur have been preserved. The lineages of many varieties continued through the Cenozoic era where some reached very large sizes. Most of the very large mammals became extinct in the last ice age, but have smaller descendants. 🔴 FOLLOW US ▶@prehistoric__planet ----------- #bear #paleontology #динозавр #megafauna #dinosaur #dinosaurs #dinosaurios #dinosaurier #dinosauri #dinomite #dinosaurio #dinosaure #dinozaur #prehistoric #fossil #fossils #woolyrhino #mammal #glyptodont #sloth #megaceros #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #bears #jurassic #mammal #cretaceus #cenozoic

I think one of my favorite parts of #fossilprep , after everything is done and a specimen is ready for Collections, is making the custom Ethafoam cradle. Made to fit snuggly to keep the specimen stable, I like to think of these as a permanent hug 😊 Featured above are some glyptodont osteoderms! Quick doodle inspired by fossil evidence of predation by Protocyon on an old, arthritic Glyptotherium :B Protocyon was a cerdocyonine- that is, a canid closely related to modern day South American species such as the bush dog and the maned wolf. It was however bigger (similar to the African wild dog in size, although at least one study estimates it at up to 46 kg which is more in the size range of modern gray wolves), and specialized for a hypercarnivorous diet. It is believed to have filled a niche similar to African wild dogs and dholes, hunting medium to large sized animals in packs, and prefering open plain habitats. Coprolites (fossilized feces) containing giant ground sloth osteoderms have been assigned to Protocyon, and they were apparently also feeding on the same prey as the sabercat Smilodon meaning they may have been competitors. Once thought to have been a South American endemism, Protocyon was recently found to have lived in Yucatan (south east Mexico) as well. It is a shame that this animal did not survive to our days- would be cool to have the Neotropical "wild hunting dog" to complete the set :B #protocyon #glyptodont #glyptotherium #megafauna #wildlife #animal #beast #hodarinundu #art #dog #canid #cerdocyonine #doodle

The Glyptodont, a prehistoric marvel, roamed the Earth during the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. This massive creature, resembling an oversized armadillo, was adorned with a domed shell crafted from interlocking bony plates, creating a mosaic of natural armor. With some species exceeding lengths of 10 feet, the Glyptodont presented an imposing figure in ancient landscapes. 🦴✨ Imagine the scene: a colossal, armored giant, armed with a club-like tail, navigating the Pleistocene terrain. Despite these impressive adaptations, the Glyptodont faced extinction around 10,000 years ago, leaving behind a legacy of prehistoric wonder and curiosity. 🌍 #glyptodont #prehistoricwonder #extinction #extinct #earth #animals #extinctspecies Second slide artwork: @xtinctdesign

#Glyptodont

Spotted this Glyptodont yesterday. Glyptodonts are an extinct subfamily of large, heavily armoured armadillos (11 feet, 3,3 meter). They arose in South America around 48 million years ago and spread to southern North America after the continents became connected around 2.7 million years ago. They became extinct approximately 11,000 years ago at the end of the Pleistocene, following the arrival of humans to the Americas. #megafauna #armadillo #iceage #glyptodon #glyptodont #armadillos #iceageanimals #chlamyphoridae #ijstijd #pleistocene #weirdcreatures #cryptozoology #armor #gordeldier #pleistoceneepoch #ijstijd

We’re evolving! Pardon our dust as we update our exhibits, including the first floor Paleontology Gallery, Discovery Center, and Geology Gallery. Dr. Pamela Owen, associate director of Texas Science & Natural History Museum, dusts off a glyptodont, an extinct type of mammal, in the museum’s Paleontology Gallery. Glyptodont skeletons include thick protective armor that covered them from head to tail. Their five-foot-long “shell” (called a carapace) is like that of an armadillo, but lacks the “bands” seen in the midsection of armadillos. The tail, clad in armor, could serve as a club, but it was mostly used for balance during locomotion. Glyptodonts had short square skulls and chewed the plants they ate with a forward-grinding motion. The name “glyptodont” means “carved tooth” in Greek, named for the grooves found on the outside of their teeth. The glyptodont and other fossils (including dinosaurs, plants, corals, crustaceans, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals), meteorites, the spectacular Onion Creek Mosasaur, and much more are ready and waiting for you! The first floor is getting a fresh coat of paint, and new interpretive signage will be added to these exhibits in early 2023. Join us for our Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 23 to revisit — or discover — your favorite exhibits! #sciencemuseum #naturalhistorymuseum #texasmuseums #atxmuseums #glyptodont #utaustin #paleontology

📸 @el_turkeeeto @culturalapampa #CulturaSueñaySigue #NaturalezayCultura #LaPampa #HistoriaNatural #MuseoEnTransformacion #MPHN #ColeccionPaleovertebrados #Gliptodonte #TuboCaudal #PaleovertebratesCollection #Glyptodont #CaudalTube #NaturalHistory #FossilFriday Another different defense A few weeks ago we showed you a photo of the replica of the Doedicurus tail, present in our museum, in which you could see semicircular structures where large spikes were inserted that this great armadillo used to defend itself from predator attacks. These spikes were made of a material similar to that of nails and claws, so it does not usually fossilize. All glyptodons, like armadillos, have their tails covered by a tube made of plates. Although the shape of the tail and the size of the spikes were particular to each species, their arrangement was a distinctive feature of each individual, something like a fingerprint. Today we show you the end of the caudal tube of another glyptodon, older than Doedicurus, in which you can see the drawing of the plates and at the end, two structures where the two spikes that finished off the end were inserted.

📸 @el_turkeeeto ✏️ Pablo Nuñez @culturalapampa #CulturaSueñaySigue #NaturalezayCultura #SantaRosa #LaPampa #HistoriaNatural #MuseoEnTransformacion #MPHN #Pleistoceno #ColeccionPaleovertebrados #TuboCaudal #Doedicurus #Gliptodonte #Pleistocene #PaleovertebratesCollection #CaudalTube #Glyptodont #NaturalHistory #FossilFriday Powerful defense Doedicurus was one of the genera of glyptodons that inhabited the Pampean region towards, 10,000 years ago. It was one of the largest members of the family, measuring up to 4 meters long and weighing 1,500 kg. Remains of this large mammal were found in the subsoil of Santa Rosa in the ‘90s. Glyptodonts were characterized by presenting a large rigid shell made up of numerous articulated plates and a tail protected by a series of rings and ending in a bony tube that ends with a series of spikes, the arrangement of which was particular to each species. This tail served as a defense against the attack of large hunters such as Smilodon. Contrary to what one might think due to their slow and clumsy appearance, the glyptodonts were very agile, especially in the art of defense. The photo corresponds to the end of the Doedicurus replica tail present in our museum.

#Museumdetail #DetailDetectivereveal - 🦴🌿 The #glyptodont was a #prehistoric mammal that lived during the #PleistoceneEpoch, which began almost two million years ago. Glyptodonts were usually about the size and mass of a small car. They could grow nearly seven feet long and weigh up to half a ton. . . Through comparative anatomy, although looking very different from each other, scientists have determined that glyptodonts and giant ground #sloths 🦥 are related cousins. Sharing similar teeth 🦷 and lower back vertebra, these animals share a common ancestor from South America. #Fossil #Fossils #FloridaMuseum

Feeling like a kid again can be a really good feeling, and looking at dinosaur bones and big rocks makes me feel like a kid. After seeing the Glass Flowers at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, I also spent some time in Earth & Planetary Sciences and Vertebrate Paleontology. In other words, rocks and dinos. Have you ever heard of a Glyptodont?! It’s a prehistoric, and huge, ancestor of the armadillo. How about the Kronosaurus? A 42-foot-long prehistoric marine reptile that is terrifying. Now pair those guys with spectacular shiny rocks and minerals. This 48-year-old felt like an 8-year-old. I also saw a Triceratops skull, a giant sloth, and a Mastodon, and was too busy being a kid to take pictures. In the rocks exhibit, one of the first things I spotted from across the room was a glittering pom pom of mesolite. I zigzagged back to see the display of gold and then around the room: giant geodes, sulphur, meteorites, diamonds. Many of the specimens looked like sculptures and as I left, I thought about how our world makes the most beautiful things. It really is so special here, and it’s good to be a kid again sometimes. #armadillo #pleistocene #pleistoceno #fossilsforsale #fossilcollection #glyptodon #glyptodont #Glyptotherium #Holmesina #pampatherium #dasypus #prehistoricarmadillo #iceage #

Glyptodon is a genus of glyptodont that lived from the Pleistocene, around 2.5 million years ago, to the Early Holocene, around 11,000 years ago, in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, and Colombia. #Glyptodon #Glyptodont #Argentina https://searcheng.in/e/s/Glyptodon

. These ancient armadillos are among my favourite Ice Age animals. In early 2020, a farmer discovered several of these giant armadillos at a site in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They are about 20,000 years old. Curiously, the close association would suggest they were part of a social group, which is pretty epic (yeah, perfect for Locked in Time!). Swipe to see a close-up of an armoured tail ring from a Glyptodon, which I saw @floridamuseum a couple of years ago. Perfect for #MammalMonday Artwork by Pavel Riha. Merry Christmas, here’s a post! Today we’re munching on the Glyptodon. These weird dudes were basically prehistoric armadillos with supposedly less leprosy. Think an armadillo but jacked to shit and basically looks like Bowser. That’s this. I really don’t know what the hell I’d eat here. None of this is… appetizing. There’s mostly just shell and fur. Not a lot of its internal bits are very known but I’m going to assume there really isn’t much to munch on here. Maybe you could like… deep fry the shell? I doubt that would soften it. Sounds vaguely repulsive, I’ll have to go with a 2/10, 2 simply because I like deep fried things. . . . #prehistoric #iriseatsprehistoriccreatures #glyptodon #glyptodont #deepfrying #pleistocene

📸 @gabriel.rojo.wildlife @el_turkeeeto @culturalapampa #CulturaSueñaySigue #NosSeguimosCuidando #NaturalezayCultura #Macachin #LaPampa #HistoriaNatural #MuseoEnTransformacion #MPHN #MiocenoTardio #ColeccionPaleovertebrados #Notoungulado #Gliptodonte #LateMiocene #PaleovertebratesCollection #Notoungulate #Glyptodont #FossilFriday Fossils, now in Macachín Last Tuesday we went to the Lagoon of the Reserva Municipal de Macachín, on whose margins sediments from the Cerro Azul Formation emerge (Late Miocene, 5 million years before the present). This trip was motivated by a formal complaint made by the Pampean photographer Gabriel Rojo. While he was taking shots, he saw fossil materials in the coast, for which he immediately notified the corresponding authorities. The pieces, mostly fragmentary, were scattered on the surface and a few within the sediment. These are Glyptodont plates, isolated and others articulated, a Notoungulate fragment of the left palate with teeth, and other indeterminate bones. The pieces were collected and carried to the MPHN for their final preparation and study. This complaint and rescue protocol is detailed in the Provincial Law 3104/2018.

Fury Creature & being bio The Club-Tailed Glyptodont Despite the name and some similarities to armadillos, The Club Tailed Glyptodont (Glyptodontis petrobolas) is quite different beast from the extinct glyptodont (Doedicurus) from Earth. This beast resembles an amalgamation of a kangaroo, a giant armadillo and the prehistoric glyptodont. This huge beast is extremely territorial and dangerous, as it won’t hesitate to batter its victims with its massive claws or crush them with its elastic but armored club-like tail. And if that wasn’t enough it could use its tail to hit gigantic boulders like a baseball bat, hurling them towards its enemies with deadly accuracy. Despite have an armored shell it is more than capable of covering the distance with great hoping strides just like a kangaroo or a wallaby. - - - All copyrights go to @jondox_revolutionarymangartist & @sushiskeletonofficial - - - #clubtailedglyptodont #glyptodont #giantarmadillo #furyjondox #fury #hesperia #kangaroo #doedicurus #mythicalcreatures #fearsomecritters #worldbuilding #monstersizecomparison #fudowebcomic #fudo #gaia #webtooncanvas #cryptids

In this sense, at the beginning of October we received notice that on the northern margin of the body of water in the Laguna Utracán Natural Reserve, bone remains emerged in sediments assigned to the Cerro Azul Formation, with an age of about 5 million years. They were a fragment of the skull and jaw with teeth of an indeterminate mammal and three articulated glyptodon armor plates. The discovery was made by the Bird Watcher Guide Marcelo Dolsan who took photographs with a reference scale of the materials in his site, took the geolocalized location of each one and immediately reported the finding to the Culture Secretary for its correct extraction.

"In what some day will be the Aysén region of Chile, in the Middle Miocene, two young Borhyaena Tuberata lay in their den as they wait for their mother to come back from her hunt. The cubs await in silence, until they hear a loud rustling outside of their den. Thinking that it could be their mother, the two creep their way to the den's entrance, but they soon realize who has been making the noise. A glyptodont (probably Propalaehoplophorus) is foraging near the Borhyenas' den, oblivious to the presence of the two cubs. The young had never seen such animal until now, and as curiosity gets the better of them, they slowly approach the armored beast. They smell it, walk around it, and even try to climb on its shell on multiple occasions. The glyptodont doesn't perceive them as a threat, so it tolerates the cub's presence. This goes on for a few minutes, and eventually the glyptodont grows tired of the two cubs and disappears into the thicket. As soon as the cubs loose sight of the animal, they hastily go back into their den to continue their wait" ... Orlando Science Center: The Pliocene Age This is another display of prehistoric Florida this time in the Pliocene period. It has a large sign with information about the season and current weather conditions, as well as shells and sloths. It displays various fossil shells and molluscs found in the state, such as a giant venus clam and dog-toothed spar calcite. Marine animals ranged from whales, sperm whales and sharks, showing a tooth from a great white shark. In the mammals we see a skull of a giant sloth Megalonyx, the hand claw of an Eremotherium and the skull of a Megatherium; the skull of a Castoroides or giant beaver and bones of a common beaver, also the skull of a primitive pronghorn and pieces of the shell of the glyptodont Glyptotherium.
