Very Young Infant Lar Gibbon Holding Its Mother IMAGE STORY: I took this image at the Oakland Zoo late last month on a photo shoot with my intermediate wildlife class I am teaching for Peninsula Camera Club. This young gibbon was born around the first of the year. This was the last animal we photographed on the outing. Its mother was very protective of her newborn and mostly hid behind a group of trees in the back of their enclosure. It was about 2:00 PM when we were photographing the gibbons; the sun was high in the sky, and the light was harsh. We spend most of the morning in the upper part of the zoo, reached by the gondola, focusing on the Mountain Lions, Grizzly Bears, and the Male Jaguar. We arrived late at the gibbons and didn’t spend enough time waiting for the right moment and opportunity when the mother and youngster were briefly in the open. Being patient and spending the extra appropriate time at a sighting is essential for nature photography. ABOUT: The lar gibbon, also known as the white-handed gibbon, is an endangered primate in the gibbon family, Hylobatidae. It is one of the better-known gibbons and is often kept in captivity. “In a civilized world, honesty and compassion need to go hand in hand. Checking out the Tapirs in Elephant Odyssey, I noticed three tiny critters surrounding the Capybara family. Turns out Rosalina and Bowie were expecting more additions to the group, making a total of eight Capybara. This was taken when they were three days old, so they've been growing in the meantime - These large rodents live in relative gatherings up to 10 members per group, including a dominant male. Their range spans from Central to South America. Capybara are found by any source of water, and with their semiaquatic lifestyle. This makes their reproduction cycle seasonal, with one community multiplying to 40 members during the wet-season. These large quantities provide secured protection from predators all around. Green Monkey - Barbados January 2024: this is possibly my favourite shot from our trip to Barbados this past January. On our last night, we went out in search of monkeys one last time. And fortunately we were rewarded big time. As the sun was starting to set, a group of about 50 green monkeys came walking down the road and onto the local golf course. Many of them stayed on the ground, but a few of them jumped up into the trees to eat. This little guy waited to do so until it was almost too dark too shoot, but just as I was packing up and getting ready to leave, he popped up on this branch and started to pose. It was an amazing ending to the day and trip! Encore une belle journée passé tout la haut ,la Nature sait vraiment comment me rendre heureux depuis que j'ai rangé le fusil ,c'est juste incroyable !!. Je pense que j'ai une super guidance ✨ en plus de cet instinct que je sais écouter avec justesse et finesse . Quelques soit les circonstances emmenant des changements de plans,je sais rester calme est posé,me disant qu'il y aura toujours un animal qui m'offrira son apparition, quelque soit le lieu et ce bout de terre sur lequel je décide de me poser. Ce vendredi 26.04 a été une journée qui s'est déroulé en deux parties,avec une matinée destinée à la récupération des cartes SD des trois pièges photos, notamment des deux posés il y a un peu plus de 4 mois et ensuite la pose d'un quatrième,ce qui fait que j'en ai 4 en haut ⛰️ et 5 en bas ,de quoi garder un oeil partout 😊 entre 🦊,🦌 et 🐗 ça fait du beau monde! . Après m'être occupé des pièges photos,je décide en début d'après midi ,de me poster en lisière d'un champ que je connais,une bonne remise à cervidés. Positionné en hauteur sur une sorte de promontoire,je domine tout ce qui peut éventuellement se montrer , en limitant les chances d'être repéré olfactivement et/ou visuellement. En milieu d'après midi ,les cimes commencent à être enrobées par d'épais nuages ☁️,me laissant penser que la pluie ne devrait plus tarder .Bingo ,il est aux alentours de 15h30 quand elle commence à tomber ,mais pas de panique,ce joli pin me servira de parapluie ☔😁.L'averse ne dura pas si longtemps et quelques minutes avant de ressortir du sous bois ,une pensée me traverse l'esprit :"Après la pluie c'est toujours bon ,car les animaux ont tendance à sortir à découvert plus facilement,voir même pendant la pluie " .Mon souhait fut exaucé 😁 avec ce jeune hère( 6 mois à un an) aux allures de lama qui suivait sa mère 😊. The #rhino has always been an animal with mythical connotations. From inspiring tales of unicorns to its unfortunate modern day demand for its #horn and its supposed magical properties in Asian markets, the #rhinoceros seems supernatural. It is also one of the most #endangeredspecies on the planet. Unfortunately #rhinos may go extinct in my lifetime. I was able to see these amazing creatures when I visited #southafrica . As it’s National Mammal Week, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the water vole, which is a native semi-aquatic rodent here in the UK. Earlier this week I had the privilege of attending the Water Vole Ecology and Field Signs Training course, hosted by @ptes_org . It was an incredible experience, and I’m excited to put my newfound knowledge into practice. Water voles play a vital role in maintaining the health and balance of our ecosystems. One of the key reasons water voles are so important is because they are considered a keystone species. They create burrows along riverbanks, which not only provide them with shelter but also help stabilise the soil and prevent erosion. These burrows also create small channels and pools that benefit other wildlife, including fish, birds, and invertebrates. Water voles also act as valuable indicators of waterway health. They are highly sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat degradation. By monitoring water vole populations, conservationists can gain valuable insights into the overall health of an ecosystem and take appropriate measures to protect and restore their habitats. Sadly, water voles have faced significant declines in recent years due to habitat loss, pollution, and predation by non-native species like mink. This is why conservation efforts are crucial to ensure their survival. Initiatives such as habitat restoration, predator control, and public awareness campaigns all play a vital role in protecting water voles and their habitats. By spreading the word about water voles and their conservation, we can help ensure that these important species continue to thrive in our waterways and contribute to the overall health of our ecosystems. An interesting but incomplete mammal skull, found on chalk grassland and bleached by the sun. The y-shaped ridge on the top of the head suggests this is probably a badger skull, missing its incisors and lower mandible.
