A huge 'thank you' to @kiklo.spaces yesterday for hosting Steve Nichols, Neil Trundle and myself for the "All things MP4/4 and the 1988 season" talk. Taking place in the presence of MP4/4 chassis #3, places for this very special event were very limited and our guests travelled from all over the UK and Europe to hear our reminiscences of how the car came about, the frantic build programme, delivering it just in time for the Imola Test just before the season started in Brazil, working with Alain and Ayrton and the classic races from that very special year. It was a pleasure to meet so many enthusiasts of the car and re-live that amazing golden era of F1. EVs too quiet? Not this one. 120dB of noise, as you can see by some of the folks standing behind it. It initially sounds like a jet engine starting, and then settles into something similar to a gaming computer running ultra-graphics 🤣 The sound emanating from the McMurtry Spéirling (Irish for 'Thunderstorm') comes from the internal fan that generates 2000kg of downforce whilst the car is sat still, utilising mechanical downforce rather than aerodynamic- A similar system could be found in the Brabham BT46B F1 car during the 1978 season. I have posted two images one in colour the other mono which is better? Sir Stirling Moss taken at Goodwood Festival of speed driving the 1955 Mercedes Benz W196. Sir Stirling Moss, who passed away last year and is widely regarded as one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, despite never winning a Formula 1 championship. Moss is synonymous with Goodwood. He entered and won his first race at the Goodwood Motor Circuit on September 18, 1948. 1997 McLaren F1 (Silver) This is the McLaren F1, which was produced from 1992 - 1998. It was the fastest production car in the world for well over a decade, and is surely one of the greatest cars the United Kingdom has ever produced. The F1 has a 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12, with 4 valves per cylinder. The engine was sourced from BMW, and is known internally at McLaren as the S70/2. The F1 produces 627bhp and 480lb ft of torque. The car has a power-to-weight ratio of 560bhp per ton and weighs 1137kg. The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive F1 sends its power through a 6-speed manual gearbox. This particular car is painted in Magnesium Silver. The McLaren F1 has an engine bay which is lined with gold, which is the best material for dispersion of heat. This particular car was previously owned by Elon Musk. The F1 can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 240mph. The new cost of the car was £635,000. Today the approximate cost of the car is £20 million.
