The beautiful finished product! Cicada Brood XIX (Magicicada spp) also known as the great southern brood. They emerge from the ground after 13 years, molt, mate, lay eggs, and the larvae hatch and return back into the earth for another 13 years. . . . . . . . . . #greatsouthernbrood #periodicalcicada #periodicalcicadas #13yearcicada #cicadas2024 #cicadas #cicadas2024 #magicicada #nuts_about_macro #nuts_about_nature #nuts_about_wildlife #macro_brilliance #macro_kings #snagnation #soulmademacro #earthcaptures #bugslife #biosapiens #insectworld #brood #broodxix2024

The metamorphosis of the periodical cicada: They crawl out of the ground resembling a brown beetle, climb up a tree, stop at some point, and their back splits open (as seen here). A white cicada with a pair of black eyes and red eyes emerges as it molts (next pics 👉). It rests while its wings unfold and harden, just like a butterfly. (next pics 👉) It's body turns black and it's wings turn golden. . . . . . . . . . . . #cicadas #cicadas2024 #cicadametamorphosis #cicadamolting #periodicalcicada #cicadaemergence #whiteghostcicada #ghostcicada #nuts_about_insects #nuts_about_wildlife #nuts_about_macro #passion_in_macro #insectmania #insects_macro #snagnation #soulmademacro #bugslife #biosapiens #cupoty_macro #bugs_are_us #insectworld #earthcaptures #greatsouthernbrood #magicicada

As you probably know if you’ve been out and about the last few days, periodical cicadas have emerged in central North Carolina after 13 years underground. You’ll find both the winged adults and their discarded nymph casings clinging to trees and shrubbery throughout Duke Gardens, as well as in natural areas and human developments throughout the region. Their red eyes and massive numbers may make them seem scary or overwhelming, but cicadas are ultimately harmless to people and plants—not to mention an excellent food source for birds, reptiles, mammals and (unfortunately) pet dogs, which scarf them up like candy. 🌿 Although they might all appear identical to the casual eye, several closely related species of 13-year cicadas are part of the 2024 emergence (known as “Brood XIX” or “the Great Southern Brood” to distinguish them from those on different cycles). Here in North Carolina, you’re most likely to encounter Magicicada tredecim, which is bright orange on the underside of its abdomen, as well as M. tredecula (black with narrow orange stripes) and M. tredecassini (pure black). While they emerge at roughly the same time, each species has its own distinctive call and chorus, allowing individuals to find each other in the crowd. 🌿 Unlike annual cicadas, which are bright green with dark eyes and emerge in late summer every year, this round of periodical cicadas will be active from late April/early May through the end of June. Having mated and laid their eggs, the adults will die off, and all will be quiet again—until the next brood matures in 2037. 📷Nick Schwab. 🌿 PROGRAMS: We still have spots left in a few of our spring programs, from plant propagation to flower portraits & working with clay soils. The first periodical cicada emerged yesterday! I've been monitoring the emergence since I observed our first nymph in November of last year and yet, I didn't find this one first, my sister-in-law did... Anyway, proud to have it and I'm excited to hear them chorus in the upcoming weeks. It's still cold here and rainy which will likely protract their emergence. Keep following for more cicada emergence timeline info and fun facts! . . . #cicada #cicadidae #magicicada #bugs #bug #insectsofinstagram #insects #insect #entomology #entothewoods #cicadamania #broodxix #greatsouthernbrood #nature #neature #getoutside #conservation #foraging #wildlife #wildfood #native #nativespecies #Missouri #ozarks

Magicicada trecedim, a thirteen-year cicada, on the Cliatt Creek Trail at Mistletoe State Park this weekend. Though not visible in this photo, the underside of this cicada's abdomen is orange, which is one of the ways to identify the species. The orange patch behind the cicada's big red eyes is also diagnostic. Both Magicicada trecedim and tredecassini are present at Mistletoe State Park, part of the Brood XIX emergence. I still haven't seen a tredecassini, but I could hear them on the trails, especially as I got closer to the creek. Magicicada trecedim makes a whirring sound, which I could hear as a constant the moment I arrived at the park. This is the sound I remember from the Brood X emergence of seventeen-year cicadas in 2021. But as I walked further down the trail, I started to hear more of a buzzing, clicking sound up in the trees, which sounded to me a lot more like the familiar sounds of annual dog-day cicadas we get every summer. I later learned that this was Magicicada tredecassini (also identifiable by a black abdomen, instead of orange.) I love these cicadas with their Halloween colors (mostly black body, orange-edged wings, and red eyes), huge fairy wings, and funny faces. I'm happy I got to experience both species this year, and two cicada seasons since moving to Georgia.

👁️ Cicada Watch in Calvert County? We'll explain. The exciting news about cicadas emerging this May and June is true, but for residents in Calvert County, Brood XIX will likely miss this visit. However, don't fret! A short trip south to St. Mary's County could put you right in the middle of the buzzing action. These fascinating creatures spend most of their lives underground before emerging for a few weeks to mate and lay eggs. Their loud calls are a sign that the males are attracting females, and after the eggs hatch, the new generation dives back underground to repeat the 13-year cycle. Want to be a part of the science? Download the Cicada Safari app to report your cicada sightings and contribute to valuable scientific data! Seconds before trying to eat it, and minutes before successfully chewing one up while I wasn't watching and making me stick my hand in his mouth to get it out. Bonus: a fresh faced 13-year-old spending their first day above ground. #cicada #cicadas2024 #broodxix #greatsouthernbrood

Still eagerly awaiting these guys' arrival! Periodical cicadas are still tending their chimneys and turrets in the wooded part of my yard. I found these by flipping over some rocks. This upcoming week of warm rains should get the soil temperature up to that 65 degrees we need for them to emerge! Cicadas from Brood X collected back in 2020. Pictured above, the “Pharaoh” Cicada, and below, two “Dwarf Periodical” Cicadas with their molted nymph husks. This year, we’ll have both Brood XIII and Brood XIX emerge simultaneously, an event that hasn’t happened since 1803! If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the Midwest this April and May, you may have the chance to encounter them! So are the cicadas coming back⁉️ I keep hearing a lot of talk about the emergence of cicadas agin this year… Does anyone know the real answer? These have been some of my favorite creatures to make! 🔴🔴 obsessed with those eyes! I am thinking about making some again, especially if they are emerging again this year. I know there is also an annual green cicada that I could make. What do you think? Anyone still want a Happy Huggable Cicada? Kiddo has been collecting the cicada exoskeletons she finds so I've started putting them into little jars. Because everything is cuter in a tiny jar. Have you seen more cicada shells around lately? Don't worry! This is not the year of emergence for the great southern brood. That's next year (2024). These friends you're seeing just woke up too early. #cicada #greatsouthernbrood #magicicada

I heard Cicadas buzzing last night for the first time this year. It's a sound I love. Sweet memories of lying in bed across from my sister in the 1950s listening to them buzz and laughing. I was excited to find these earrings @ravenstonegifts. Really big statement earrings and feather light weight.
