This week our teachers in our Levels 3-8 program are discussing motor skills and motor planning. Motor planning is the sensory process that enables an unfamiliar task to become familiar as well as learning how to do that task automatically (Dobie & Dalzeill, 2011) The keys to motor planning are using the body to gather accurate information through touch, muscles, joints and movements. Both motor planning and motor skills require a good sense of body awareness. If children do not have good maps of their bodies, they cannot direct unfamiliar movements and they take a long time to learn them. Our BabyROO and GymbaROO programs provide a wide variety of sensory-motor activities designed to follow the sequential development of the brain. Through the repetition of massage, movement and vestibular input, movement can become more automatic and more accurate and thus require less input from the brain. Day 387: My first Gymbaroo class; the play area was fantastic, the best that I have ever been to. I wish I could play in something like this everyday. The actually classes was ok - didn't feel like focusing 100% but the educator said that it will take around three sessions for toddlers to be attentive. This week in our classes we are talking about the importance of water and its relationship to learning. Optimal water content enables optimal brain functioning. Research indicates that memory and attention and mood are all negatively affected when a child is dehydrated. Being dehydrated by just 2% impairs performance in mental tasks and physical coordination. Babies and children have a higher body water content relative to body mass than adults so they need regular fluid intake.
